Ostia Antica, harbour of the Imperial Rome - A computer reconstruction

  • This is a video of my reconstructions of the Roman town of Ostia. The Ostia Antica Park is one of the largest and most important italian archaeological sites of the ancient Rome. With his fifty hectares, its buildings and its streets, it testifies the development of a large urban and commercial center during the imperial age. Ostia was the most important port of the antiquity, the gate of Rome on the Mediterranean sea.
This ancient roman town is located at the mouth of the Tiber, hence its name: in fact 'ostium' in latin means 'mouth of the river'. It was a quite large town and for its importance and extension it was called 'the second Rome'.
I have visited the town many times during my life and each time I was amazed by its monuments, its mosaics, its architecture. I have projected myself in a imaginary world, trying to picture the buildings around me. This reconstruction is the product of my researches and long study of the roman architecture that ended up with the modeling of a huge 3d model (around 15 million of polygons) representing the whole town - and part of the neighborhood.
According to my knowledge (and please let me know if I am wrong), this is the first time this town has been entirely reconstructed in 3D.
I have produced many still images and packaged them into apps for iOS and Android, a sort of archeological guide based only on 3d images. You can find more info about the iOS apps on my web site at:
    www.colonia-ost...
or searching 'ostia antica' on the Apple Store or on the Google Play.
If you enjoyed watching this video, I would be really glad to read your comments. Drop a line here or just click 'I like'. I will know you appreciated my work....
    Thank you

The Romans sure did love arches and columns. The theater must have been beautiful in its time.

My wife and I visited Ostia Antica just 3 weeks ago with Trafalgar (we are from Australia) we couldn't believe how beautiful it was or must have been. You're wonderful reconstruction in 3D was extremely satisfying to watch as it helped use visualise how it must have looked in it's time.
    Thanks and well done.

One of my favorite places in Italy, which is my favorite country to visit. I love the umbrella pines. In Pompeii, I discovered the exact same mosaic floor at the House of the Tragic Poet which is original in my house here built by Henry Ford`s associate. I always love to return to Ostia Antica, also the Via Appia Antica.

Fantastico! Il video fa anche capire che alcuni edifici della Ostia moderna (come il Vittorio Emanuele) si sono chiaramente richiamati allo stile dell'Antica Ostia.

I am amazed by the details in tge reconstruction . They have been able to gather as much information as that we see in your video,? If so, I am flabvergasted. From the little I know about Ostia Antiqua, it is one of the best preserved ancient Roman city in the world, some say even better than Herculaneum.

The Roman aqueduct is amazing too...lead pipes that carried hot water to the villas...these people had a government that worked for them.

It's crazy to think that this was just a suburb, mayne even just the industrial annex of Rome... yet it was bigger and more advance than any city in Europe (except Constantinople) after Rome fell, for close to a thousand years....

    • @giovanniserafino1731
      @giovanniserafino1731 Рік тому

Tiber River was altered during the Middle Ages due to an earthquake which changed its course . The artificial Harbour made by emperor Claudius is now dry land and covered with vegetation. Because of silting Ostia Antica is no longer on the ocean but is now 8 km from the coast.

I think it is fair and sad to say that when Ostia was a live city, no modern similarly sized city of today was as grand in architecture (and that is nothing compared to Rome). The wig theory that the future is always better in everything is false. It may be better in some ways and worse in others. Often the perceived improvements aren't, they're regressions and the real improvement are taken for granted. Architecture is one area that has worsened in function, durabilty and beauty.

it's okay but it's missing absolute key element, a population. This city should be crammed with people. There should be a large number of slaves, some naked, some clothed working around the city. There is a mosaic of a slave in Ostia in one of the baths showing an african slave completely naked with an arched spine a remnand of quadripedal walking which is common even today among some africans. Also chariots, horses, animals, and STATUES where are the marble statues of deities ??? this is very incomplete.

Hello, thank you for submitting your comment on the images.
The lack of people is one of my obsession and problems in the reconstructions. I have some main point that work against me.
      1) It is difficult to model a character (male/female) and make him/her unique. I use a software to model them and I find really few roman clothes to use.
      2) A character can be as heavy as a main building. This means that if I put 3 or 4 characters I can have the same "poligon weight" of the Theater. The whole model is already 16 Million polygons as I am near the physical limit of my hardware.
Of course I can develop partial views with few quarters crowded with people, but this means to produce new set of scenes and characters, and this requires time and effort.
In addition, I wanted to 'expand' the buildings on the other side of the Tiber (archeological evidences show that there is another half of town on the other side) and I wanted also to approach the modeling of the near town of Portus.

Thank you for explaining ; After all your work someone complains about the lack of people ! My assumption before viewing was it would be focusing on structures … I would have expected people if it were title ' what life was like in Ostia ' .
