  • RUSSIAN UPDATE: Back in early June, I noticed the Russians starting to make queen cells and I decided to let nature run its course. I let the bees just do what they wanted and checked on them every 3 weeks. To my surprise, everything worked out pretty nice! Check out how my "Honey Badger" hive is doing now!

when bees don't have to take care of brood, they evolve faster to foraging bees and thus the hive brings in loads of nectar, so an interruption in the laying cycle actually is very beneficial for honey production.

And very beneficial for Varroa Control. No Brood, no Varroa breeding. Brood Breaks are a great Tool for many reasons.

You have to time that break to coincide with your nectar flow.

Really like the focus on a single hive. I use flour sack cloth to cover supers and frames taken out of the hive instead of using a frame rest. It keeps them calmer and keeps robbing down.

    • @CuriousCreature
      @CuriousCreature 5 років тому +1

Don Beissel I picked up the idea from a mentor. I use a quiet box to put frames in and flour sack dish towels to cover boxes with so bees aren’t exposing their stores to the open air. The drapes keep flying down and fewer intruders from getting in.

You really don't want a hive to replace a queen this late in the season unless they are really strong because they won't have time to build up for the winter without feeding them depending on how far north you live. Queens today average about 2 1/2 years of egg production.

Good job. Now like your other newer Queens, this hive is getting more adapted to your location. That new Queen mated with local Drones. I would not doubt that hive has an easy winter. I don't get hung up on "Russian" "Italian" "Carniolan".. as time goes by the daughter Queens are becoming "Native". I know you opened up the Broodnest for her by taking those outside frames of honey, but make sure the outside frames are full in September. They use those outside Honey frames as Insulation. The flow down here in Brooklyn, New York is drying up, not sure how soon until you hit Dearth, I suspect your hives will be getting surplus nectar until about August. I extracted this year (and Last Year) right after July 4th, that seems to be the end of peak flow here. I am going to do a check today to see if the supers are filling back up at the same rate they have been the last 6 weeks. It's nice not to have to feed any hives. Splitting during the flow makes that possible.

This is why I like to replace queens when I don't like the colony's behavior; why tolerate a hive you don't care for?

I expected this to happen sooner or later. It was 'later' but it's no big deal to me. I'm not doing this for a living. I'm learning watching the bees being bees. I removed those two frames at that moment because they were totally honey bound, but I was not prepared to do a big frame shuffle at that time. I'm going in to remove some honey from everyone later this week. Everyone is full with multiple supers. I'll give her lots of space to lay at that time.

We have been pulling full supers earlier than ever this year. The hot room where we keep the supers before extracting is packed full

You need to get a queen castle.... I just built 2, so much easier - to split up small pairs of frames, and they can be combined back into the original hive, if turns out the original hive is queenless.

Hopefully the Russians will be more amicable about their honey now!

Kateberly This colony feels totally chill now. Everything seems different. Even the way they’re building comb isn’t a huge mess anymore.

Amazing work. I didn’t unsubscribe like I said I might early in the spring. I have reached out and received some solid advise local to me. Cheers southern friend and keep up the great work. As always I wish I had your ability to maintain such neat and organized yards. I’m organized chaos. Haha.

They may be calmer but they apparently still like to be artistic with their building. :) Beautiful honey frames, at least those looked normal. Funny seeing they're glueing the vivaldi board. Are the russians the only ones who do stuff like this to this level?

I had one other hive completely propolize the vivaldi board vent. All others leave it wide open.

There was a noticeable difference in the comb compared to just a few months ago. That hive has always been cross-combed to hell. When I last opened them the other day, things were very tidy. That old queen was a huge problem.

Sometimes when a hive has a break in brood, honey production ramps way way up temporarily because there are no brood to take care of. I suspect that is what happened here.
