  • 1. 1 By river courses flowing down
    The land of Babylon,
We sat and wept at memories
    Of Zion overthrown.
2 We hung our harps in grief aside,
    Unplucked by weary hand,
    Upon the willows bending low,
    Amidst that foreign land.
    2. 3 Our captors carry us away,
Then call on us for song!
These people plunder all our wealth,
    Then bid us laugh along:
“Sing! Sing us one of Zion’s songs!
    Perform your fav’rite chants!”
4 How can we sing Jehovah’s song,
    Exiled in foreign lands?
    3. 5 If I should fail, Jerusalem,
    To fondly think of you,
My hand should halt; my talent fail,
    If I were thus untrue.
6 If I do not remember you,
My tongue should bind in shame.
If I prefer a greater joy
    Above Jerusalem.
    4. 7 Against the sons of Edom, LORD,
    Call forth Your wrathful gaze,
    Who said, “Destroy Jerusalem!
    Her deep foundations raze!”
8 O Babylon to be destroyed,
Glad he that treats you thus
9 To dash your young ones on the rock,
As you have done to us.
