Actually the tunnel is bored below the seabed. It goes through a substrate called chalk marl. When it was bored many years ago half of the spoil was dumped near the Dover docks to form 89 acres of new English land, which was named Samphire Hoe. This is now a very beautiful nature reserve open to the public for walks and picnics. Just one correction regarding this video. At the start the UA-camr’s caption shows ‘Eurotunnel Dover Terminal’. That is incorrect. The Eurotunnel terminal in England is at Folkestone. Dover is a completely different town further down the coast.
There are a couple of reasons for the car-on-train approach. One is that with electric trains, making sure the air is breathable for such a long tunnel is much easier if there aren't car and truck engines running in it. The second is that any car accidents in a tunnel like this could have very serious consequences, as has happened in long alpine tunnels in the past. Keeping the cars in trains makes it much safer. Another point to consider is the size of the tunnels. The actual running tunnels are comparable in size to the old bore of the Blackwall tunnel, so if they were used as road tunnels, that would give a sense of how much capacity they could handle. Also, the car shuttle trains run at 140 km/h (about 85 mph), which is significantly faster than it would be safe to drive through (though obviously the loading and unloading takes up a lot of that time saving).

Curious about the timeline ?, frequency ?, high fences for migrants ? adaptation to opposite side of road etc ? Now with brexit must be passport and customs etc. ? A light commentary would be welcome ?
It takes approx. 30-35 minutes for crossing (one-way) excluding waiting time at either terminal. You are normally required to check in at least 1 hour before your boarding time. In general 3-4 trains run every hour. Once you arrive at Calais, you will drive along a dual carriage one-way road until your lane soon merges with the "right" side of A16 French motorway. This is very interesting. I didn't know they had this service for autos on the train. It makes sense. Interesting you stay in your car for the duration of the trip. Can someone get out to use the toilet if they need to? How long is the trip through the tunnel?

At 4:30 cars have passed 2 border controls and already entered the EU (not physically, but passport control wise). @@londonwalker3362 It's a bit like saying Reading is London, or Manchester is Liverpool. They are close to each other but separate identities (In the case of Folkestone/Dover 7 miles difference). Interesting video not withstanding.
@@davidcollins9512 Yes, you're right. Apology for being confused.
I learnt something new today.
Great video. Shame they can't give the trains a bit of a clean.
Thank you for watching. Actually I uploaded a new video. Hope you find it interesting too. ua-cam.com/video/xgRaw4lz0Rc/v-deo.html
HI tech di ba? In the future, ganito din sa pinas. Papunta outside pinas to other parts of asian countries.
Very nice video you posted here London walker, i never watcb this travel between Dover city in England and Calais in France via this huge Euro tunnel by train. always thought you drive yourself by car in this tunnel. Very interested to see this for the 1st time and is this a very expensive trip to go thru this Euro tunnel? I know in England you drive on the left side of the road and in France you have to switch to the right side of the road. So you have to take care of that too. Watching this nice video from Paramaribo in Suriname, where we have left traffic too as in England.
Thank you for watching! :)
hey nice I’m also from Suriname. 😊
Excellent!…. Thank you!… 😊👍
Thank you, too!
Hi, loved the video, thank you. I set off for Spain on 09th May driving first time out of UK I have already got my toll tags and know where to place them but wanted to ask if can give any advice for a first time driver in France that will come in handy to know, thank you.
As long as you carefully follow where and when others cars move, you'll be definitely okay. Please make sure you observe speed limits and your own speed at "kms per hour" instead of "miles per hour". Have a good travel!
I travelled through Euro star and was waiting for underwater tunnel
I thought it's an underground motorway 😅
Super cool. Thank you.
Thank you, too!
Excellent video idea
This is magnificent
15:03 - How french is that, signs telling you to both go and not go in both directions. If it werent for the Skoda in front, that wouldnt be clear...
Haha. I didn't even notice that! :-)
This is very interesting. I didn't know they had this service for autos on the train. It makes sense. Interesting you stay in your car for the duration of the trip. Can someone get out to use the toilet if they need to? How long is the trip through the tunnel?
Yes there are onboard toilets, but passengers were advised to stay in their cars in the early pandemic (when this video was recorded). The journey takes approx. 35 minutes one-way.
I love Calais,. but the way that you say it is Calay if you don't know
I love Calais, not Calay. :-)
I meant how you like say it when your talking sorry if you saw me type that wrong😅. Sorry for the inconvenience
Graciaaas disfrute el viaje fue maravilloso y toda una experiencia cuando ande por alli ya voy a estar informada adoro esos lugares Sonia Guerrero desde Argentina💝💝🙋🙋🙋🙋
Thank you, that was fun!
Thank you very much! :)
At 13:00 there's something missing. Every time you take the tunnel (by Eurostar or Eurotunnel) towards France, the last thing you see on the hill is the illegal White Horse. Why is it not there?
Hmm maybe I missed it when recording in the train.
That puts the size of Europe into perspective. You can drive from England to France via the channel tunnel. Here in Australia, we drive further to pass through even our smallest cities.
well, it puts the distance between the UK and France into perspective.. but the whole of Europe is bigger than Australia.. over 3 million KM bigger..
The Eurotunnel is in Folkestone, not Dover. Close by but completely separate places
Yes, you're right. I got confused when I made this video. My apology.
The Eurotunel UK terminal is not in Dover but in Folkestone (Cheriton)
Thank you for raising that. Fortunately I've done correctly in my later videos - ua-cam.com/video/xgRaw4lz0Rc/v-deo.htmlsi=XS0vWwlnqRV13bV- and ua-cam.com/video/-Bi0MpKMBhU/v-deo.htmlsi=07vtlUBZhmXm-mgn
I love it
I love a eurotunnel
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
Hi everyone. Thank you for watching. I recently uploaded a new video about Eurotunnel travel. ua-cam.com/video/xgRaw4lz0Rc/v-deo.html Hope you find it more useful. Have a good travel! 👍
Always wondered what it’s like to take the train, I always crossed via ferry
Hope you have a chance to try it next time!
Good video.
How is beautiful. I had never go to Europe. If I would born again, I will definitely go to Europe. Assam, India
Wow your videos are too good may God bless you ,thankyou😊
Thanks a lot for watching!
Getting to and queueing up for the train looks confusing!
True... actually it gets worse in busy holiday seasons. Whenever I use Eurotunnel, I wonder if it is the best they can do.
For the trains, is the ford transit van (9 seater) fit? Planning to bring my big family and rent a van and travel to swiss via france..great great video by the way
Thanks a lot for watching. Yes, I'm sure your 9-seater van would fit. When booking on the website, they'll ask you about your vehicle.
Thanks for the reply!! Really appreciate it..and one more question, for the tolls in framce, how actually pay for it? Using normal credot card is it ok?
Yes I remember I was able to use my UK credit and debit cards with no problems. It wasn't contacless by the way.
Wow so cool but I can’t help but think of that story Bryan Cranston told on Graham Norton when I see this😂
😂
Interesting!
Super cool
4:30 Wait, what... They don't check the luggage, was this before leaving EU? There are luggage checks even from Romania to Hungary, because they enter the Schengen Area.
At 4:30 cars have passed 2 border controls and already entered the EU (not physically, but passport control wise). I don't think they regularly carry out any luggage checks or searches, but I saw a couple of cars were being checked at the border controls. I don't know on what basis they picked up cars for check. Maybe randomly? I have no idea.
It’s so weird that you immediately have to switch on which side you have to drive
Thank you taking us drive safe
