Love the way Fams lends it the "on the double" touch, to give it the slight military groove. But totally and utterly Rasta regardless. Such an inspiring player is Aston Barrett. Unforgetable bass lines.

Great cover man, I'm a beginner bassist and this is one of the first songs I'm learning.
One question though: I noticed that you played this slightly different than in your tutorial.
For example, in part one, you play the sixth-fifth-third-root of the major scale, while here it looks like sixth-fifth-fourth-root.
Also, for the verse you're using the 4th fret or the E string, which does not happen in the tutorial.
Was that intended to make the tutorial easier? Thanks.

      +gsmcreation
AH! Well spotted! Someone is paying attention....
It was not intended -- it was my mistake on the tutorial/lesson. When I decided to make the tutorial I quickly went through the various sections and I assumed it was a "sixth-fifth-third-root" -- as this in theory would be highlighting the A chord (with an added 6th).
The G# on the Verse also skipped my awareness.... It makes sense, in theory, because the chords are D and C#m -- and therefore you play the root note D and the respective 5th being A ; then you play the C# and the respective 5th being G# (4th fret E string)
A "problem" that you find with quite a few of Bob Marley's songs is the fact that the bass guitar is not tunned perfectly, and sometimes is hard to figure out which note is being played or which note is intended. Also sometimes it did not have the greatest of clarity in the track, and the sound can sometimes be "muddy".
When I decided to record the cover I gave it a good listen, making sure I would get the notes right -- only then I realised that my tutorial was not entirely right. You spotted the 2 mistakes!
So, play like this cover and you should sound just like the original.
Thanks for your comment and thoroughness!

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond, I'm still learning my way through it :)
There's one more thing that I can't figure out, also in the verse section: what is the note played between the 3 C#s and the 3 Bs on the A string (4th and 2nd fret)?
Is it an A? Or is it a G# (4th fret E string)? I've seen other people playing G#, but after listening the original song a ridiculous number of times, my ear is telling me A, just like you played it.
      Cheers!

      It is an A
      It goes: | D D D A C# C# G# | D D D A C# C# G# | C# C# C# A B B B | F# F# |

man what's the wool at the top of the fingerboard? is it a way to mute the strings?

    • @JohnJesus
      @JohnJesus  9 років тому

      +iperTONYco
      Hi There,
Yes it is. Sometimes I put it very tight to slightly get a muted/round sound when playing open stings, sometimes I use it loose so that it does not affect the string at all. It is a simple and practical way to change the sound.

A piece of foam under the strings will do it too.
