  • Handler conflict can manifest it self in many ways. In this video we focus on handler conflict during an apprehension while the handler and team approach.

    After listening to the whole video what you suggested and your exercise to overcome the handler conflict seem to be very appropriate for an apprehension dog. Good stuff.

    Good morning,
    The first thing I do is stop the handler who has most likely condition his dog by certain commands, "stop fighting my dog", something all handlers say when clearly no one is fighting the dog, because the dog will eventually make the connection, "when I hear that, the fun is about to be over".
    I do want the handler praising his dog during the approach, telling the dog what a great job he is doing and since we do not know the background of that dog and how it was possibly trained, if it was imported with some training, I like the praise approach, as long as the dog is engaging properly.
    I do not allow the handler to run up and remove the dog immediately, every time....this may sound counter intuitive in today's society, but, the dog must learn that handler approach does not mean game over.
    As you said, when the dog sees the handler approach, it must come to think of it as a happy occasion. I do not allow lift offs off the suspect...engage while I allow it, as hard as you want, but, "out" means "out", without me touching you.
    Physical praise is great and encouraged, but no yanking the dog off...too risky and it exposes you to more lawsuits.
    This can get long and I am sure you do not want to read a novel, but, these are a few things that came to mind at 2AM as I got up. Have a great day and please continue putting out great videos as you have been.

      LEOs have to give clear verbal instruction to actors or else they stand a huge risk of legal liability. So it's not realistic to eliminate verbal commands.

    • @studmanbadcock277
      @studmanbadcock277 3 роки тому

      @@jfkst1 the legal liability is present the second you deploy your dog. I understand what you are saying but conditioning the dog is what we are trying to avoid.

      I'm a current LEO. Working dogs are a tool to gain compliance. Policy isn't written to accommodate the tool. That's ass backwards. The dog must be trained to work with LEO verbal commands to the actor. That's not a negotiable trait. I've never seen any emphasis on no verbal commands to actors in arrests or in training.

    We are working a dog that while on a hold and bark ( neutral helper ) the dog tends to glance back to the handler as she approaches. We have started showing a threat and stick tap on the front shoulder from the helper the instant the dog looks away reinforcing the threat can come at any time. Seems to be helping, let me know what ya think.

    What is the proper way to handle a K-9 that bites the handler's hand when the handler won't allow their partner to rush a suspect right away? It was a snap and not a lock on type of bite.

    Did the dog not think the judge was a second decoy/ threat?

    my dog when he reaches a very high level of arousal, gives me soft bites by taking it by the collar to remove it from the decoy, redirecting the bite to my. although I haven't done it for a long time, I'd like to know how to fix the problem

    I've never had a problem with my personal protection dogs with handler conflict. A good personal protection dog is handler sensitive and you are both on the same side. Police dogs are in conflict because the bite is more important than their handlers than getting the threat to leave. Which is my intention I want and I want my protection dog to have the same intention.

    Maybe topic for another video, but what happens to these dogs when they retire? After all the work and drive, can they be satisfied with a civilian life or do they need to continue this training afterward?

    • @studmanbadcock277
      @studmanbadcock277 3 роки тому +1

      They retire at home, most of the time, with their handlers. Some, depending on age and temperament can get used to that easy life at home, some, again, depending, cannot and must have an outlet for their drives and frustration.
      You work the dog at home a couple of nights a week, let him do some searches, give him a bite or two on a sleeve, the dog released some drive, happy dog.

    Just getting into this dog stuff. My dog runs away with his ball and string when I reward him. If he sees I have to balls no problem. Not sure if this would be conflict as he steers away when I reward him with the ball and string. Comes if I call but will want to leave again
