  • This is a stupid video don't watch this.
So in the game Solar Winds, you normally do a couple of missions for people locally then get a hyperdrive, allowing to to travel massive distances to another solar system, discover some stuff, then come back, get directed to a far-off object, and hyperdrive your way over there.
But it turns out the developers never expected that you could just fly over there in the first place. After all, wouldn't that take hours?
Well, no. It takes one hour. And about 14 minutes.
So this video is an hour and 14 minutes of me just flying almost directly there.
I may upgrade this run in the future, to be a little better with my aiming. This was a proof-of-concept, if I turned the ship more accurate in future perhaps up to a minute could be saved.

Funny I saw this, because I already knew you could just fly straight there, and only yesterday I did my own speedrun and completed the game in only 17 minutes by skipping a large chunk of it. As soon as I got the hyperdrive, I just used it to go straight to the portal.
You can also cheat to give yourself the hyperdrive (along with lots of power), so you can complete the game in about 3 minutes or so.
Also, did you know that the other ship is already at 18688, -18688, even before you go through the portal? I hyperdrived there without going via the portal and found it there.

I didn't know about the other ship being there! that's neat. Awesome to hear you did the non-direct speedrun, I'll check out your video and see how it compares to my routed-but-not-run route.

I suspect that Gimlak's ship is also in the Rigian system right at the start too, but have no way to check that.
Have you tried going straight to the end in Solar Winds 2? That'll probably take far longer, as using hyperdrive, it takes over 10 minutes just to get to the nearest system! You also have to recharge it (which actually makes it faster, and you can actually go so fast you go backwards!). With hyperdrive (and a lot of fuel), it's possible to skip huge chunks of the game, though doing so may take longer than doing it properly.

No idea about Gimlak, and I've not tried routing Solar Winds 2. I've only beaten it once or twice, so it doesn't have as much nostalgia value as Solar Winds 1 does.

oh, and how do you do the hyperdrive trick? I remember seeing that was possible but I haven't figured out how to do it. it might be helpful to hyperdrive to the end faster.

Engage at low hyperspeed and increase it to maximum while moving at hyperspeed.
