Lately ive been confused by this alternate/rake issue. I used to rake bcs it feels natural but when it comes to string jumping or 16th 4 note group I found it quite difficult and then I found out about this "you should never rake". Im glad that you also gave the opinion on both techniques. Thanks Josh this lesson came at the best time possible!
Wow! I've never thought of plucking chords like this! I have raked chords before but never have I thought of plucking them like this. Usually when plucking chords, I use thumb, index, middle, and sometimes ring if it's all four strings. And very rarely the pinkie on a five string bass.
It really bothers me you don't get more views, your videos are actually useful and the pdfs help so much, and when I see other bass lessons on youtube I get annoyed because they have hundreds of thousands of views and they rush to the point or just don't get to it in the first place. Seriously the only two useful bass lesson channels on youtube are your's and Mark's from TalkingBass.
Haha, thanks Marko. I'm sometimes frustrated by the same thing. I'm glad there are people like you who don't mind the lack of flashy graphics and exciting smash cuts who just want some solid bass lesson, and are willing to sit and pay attention to the same thing for 10-20 minutes without having a conniption. I like Mark's stuff a lot too.
so I've been thinking of getting a bass for a while, and while I've seen plenty of stuff on good basses to start with, I'm totally lost when it comes to basic amps. any suggestions?
I think a beginner is better off getting a cheap audio interface. An interface is a USB device that replaces the sound card on your computer, it's a little box that you plug your (bass)guitar into. This will allow you to record yourself, which is incredibly important to improve. You can get tonnes of amp simulation software that you can load into audio programs called DAW (digital audio workstations, protools is well known, reaper is amazing and very cheap, audacity is free but limited). This will give you more tonal flexibility, allow you to play with headphones, etc. The scarlett focusrite series are pretty good interfaces.
you dont even need an interface if you have a powerful pc, i plug my bass directly in the line in port just with the 6.3 to 3.5mm adapter and play via bias fx with gallien krueger simulated amps and it still sounds amazing! ps i've been playing 5 years already and 3 of those 5 gigging, and i dont have an amp yet, because all the sound guys plug basses into DI-s, so if i actually bought an amp it would just serve its purpose for monitoring on stage, and i can get that in ear :)
id have a bass but i cant stop buying knives and swords, and im too young to legaly work... i get about a hundred bucks and get a sword, like right when i found a bass, i find a tachi for sale
@0:45 - Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. :)

At the end of the day you'll only be using it to practice so it doesn't matter, it's up to the player to make it sound good...
