  • The FrSky Taranis QX7S is definitely a better radio than the QX7 but for some folk it isn't better value. Watch the review to find out why.
    Disclosure: this radio was provided for review purposes by GearBest.com.
    Product link: goo.gl/nhtDDi
    Pros:
    - based on the well-proven QX7
    - looks much smarter
    - better positioning of front-panel switches
    - hall effect sticks
    - cat's-bum stick ends
    - comes with a 2000mAH battery
    - comes with an excellent protective carrying case
    - comes with excellent stick-protectors
    - excellent build-quality
    Cons:
    - battery charging setup is stupid
    - as with the QX7, neck-strap setup is clumsy
    - quite a bit pricier than the QX7
    Summary:
    If you want/need the extra features that the 'S' version offers then this is a fantastic radio -- in fact, if you don't need/want sliders, I'd opt for this radio over the X9D because it probably represents better value.
    Definitely a good radio!

    Bruce, the delayed on off switch is a blessing in disguise and if you have ever witnessed someone trimming a 3 meter Imac model with two clicks of up and one click of "OFF" you will get what I mean. The inconvenience is so minimal with that two or three second wait compared to seeing your model taking a full dirt nap or pull to trash bag as its often referred too. If you don't have the balance arm mounted the on off switch is very open and accessible. You do not want fingers blindly feeling for the trim switch and finding the holy shit button instead.

      I was thinking the same! Really like that feature! Much harder to accidentally switch it on (or off), great safety feature, whether on the bench or in the field.

      Same, I really like it on mine. I wasn't even aware the "normal" one didn't do it!

    • @amisoftau2659
      @amisoftau2659 6 років тому

      I think they all have the delay for going off. This one has it for going on, as well. I didn't think that accidentally turning the tx ON was much of a concern? However, it is an opentx firmware feature, so you could probably add or lose the feature, by simply (!?:) changing a #define and compiling up your own firmware image. Well, easy on linux anyway.
      p.s. the change might be opentx version/build specific.. the last Q X7 I bought didn't have delayed start, but the more recent Q X7S purchase did - it came with a newer build of opentx.. 2.2v0006 vs 2.2v0010.

    • @WafflePlaneRC
      @WafflePlaneRC 6 років тому

      Interesting. One of the first things I did on mine was update the firmware, and when I did, that went away, so it turns on instantly like a "normal" one. I do prefer not having to hold it to turn it on though.

    The new regular x7 has the same frame . Everything the same without the hall gimbas. I threw hall gimbals in and cat bum sticks. In my case I was far better off getting the S version. In either case I'm really happy with the set up. I'm used to a worn out Devo 7 controller. Definitely have to learn this transmitter being new and precise. Love the channel! Thanks for all of your help and support

    Hi Bruce, i wonder if the hold to power on is to help avoid the issue with the x7 in that putting pressure on the lanyard hook when its on could activate the switch. (Ive had mine turn on in my bag before)

  • @alchemicalanarchist
    @alchemicalanarchist 6 років тому +3

    I just bought the QX7S and I love the Gimbals. I am coming from a Flysky FS-I6 and I am a pincher. I can fly alot better with this radio right out of the box. I really love the gimbals and the fat stick ends on them. The bigger ends are better for pinchers like me because it helps me control Throttle and Pitch better without stretching too much. This is not really a problem for thumbers. As a Pincher I think the stick ends are a nice upgrade. But the feel of the gimbals is really what really makes this radio great. To get these gimbals in an X9D you need to buy the Special Edition or install them yourself. As a pincher I use the neckstrap and I think the bracket would actually stop the radio from accidentally turning on if it was in a bag and it got bumped. Because the bracket protects the switch. Mine came with the ratcheting throttle and I undid that when I opened it and tried to tighten up the throttle but its not as tight as the springs of the others. So that is a bit of a downside. I still really like it.

    Good point about the oxide. Never thought of that. On paper the provided NiMH pack and individual AA NiMH batteries are basically the same capacity-wise.

  • @RobinCernyMitSuffix

    Well, I bought the Q X7 just after it came out. After that I bought the M7 Gimbals and created a 2s 5000mAh LiPo for it (lasts for weeks, even months), and the costs where around 180... the only thing that's now really different are the angled switches and the wireless trainer thingy, both things 90% of all people don't use/care. So I after all it was cheaper and I have a much better battery ;) (the weight of the LiPo is perfect, the Radio now balance nice on the strap)

  • @PsicoPete
    @PsicoPete 6 років тому

    Having the balancing neck strap piece conveniently covering the conveniently delayed on/off button is pretty good on my book.
    It prevents unwanted shutdowns when trying to trim a model or, if you have "friends" like me, it prevents pranks like turning off your radio when you're flying inverted 2 meters high.

    Dodgy neckstrap goings-on... My old Sprengbrook Variomodul set had a brilliant suspension system. It hung from a regular neckstrap that attached to two 90° sprung/retractable arms fitted to the bottom corners of the case, which left the radio hanging flat and balanced. It had a very long aerial. The Tx body was a wide 'tray' design without a tray, and was the most comfortable thermal and slope soaring radio I ever used.
    I flew with pinched sticks that I'd extended to the full 2 1/2" (63mm) - they were VERY long - which gave fantastically fine control for gliders at extreme altitude. To get faster, coarser response, you just slid your grip down the stick shank, so it was like having modern rates and expo on a radio that didn't have such things. The ultra-fine rolling trim wheels were excellent, too.
    Still got it, but I've only got 27 and 35 meg modules for it, so I can't fly with it any more. (Sob, sniff...)

  • @robynhoode2623
    @robynhoode2623 6 років тому

    On my Taranis I use a tray (and I'm what you call a pincher) so don't need the strap bracket but I still have it fitted. Why? Because when I first got the radio I inadvertently switched it off whilst flying when I missed the elevator trim. (I was used to a Multiplex3030 on 35Mhz).
    So a hard to reach on/off switch ian't always a bad thing - especially for a clumsy oaf like me.

    While you were showing the springs and levers my mind was already coming up with a possible solution to your problem.
    When you put more tension on the spring with the adjuster, is there enough length to fit a slightly longer spring?

    You can use a screw driver between spring coils to loosen up the spring tension on your sticks,it spreads the gap just a tad. I do it on mine and no ill effects. Sometimes you just have to think outside the box.

    Thanks for the review. I managed to break my poor old x9d plus so I'm now in the market for a replacement. Too bad this radio doesn't have sliders. I like pretty much everything else about it. For a little more dough, the x9d special edition would be a great upgrade if it weren't for all the wobbly antenna and range issues that so many people seem to be having. In the end I might just end up getting another x9d plus..
    While there are some good reviews out there already, I would still be very interested to hear your comments on the X10.

    Hey there Bruce a quick question if I may,I am thinking of pulling the trigger on a taranisx9dplus I was wondering if there is any chance that the receiver will pick up interfearence from a cdi ignition on a 20cc gas engine setup penny for it thoughts,are they interfearence free using the x8r receiver.

    • @Zillawill
      @Zillawill 5 років тому

      IIRC most 2.4 radios suffer interference in some form from gas engines and there systems, Frsky's ACCST protocol is pretty rock solid tho, but if your worried I personally would go with a RX8R, so you can then connect a 2nd RX similar to how Spektrum uses its satellites except your using 2 full range RX's

    Hi Bruce,
    Another nice, down-to-Earth review.
    One thing I noticed though...
    The Tx aerial is soldered to the PCB & as they are prone to breakage,
    I can't understand why they did not use the "normal" clip type. (Don't know the name of it.)
    Anyway, just a thought.
    &, As for reducing the spring tension...just use one the same length BUT use a smaller/finer gauge spring.
    Keep up the good work.

    Quick video suggestion: Using sliders.
    I'm a fixed wing pilot and have never used them so what exactly are the benefits?

    • @EleanorPeterson
      @EleanorPeterson 5 років тому

      Hi, LoC! I find sliders are excellent for big gliders with flaps, spoilers, air brakes, and variable wing camber. Switches are good for any on-off things, but it's so much better when you can vary settings with a slider.
      Changing the aerofoil section needs ultra-fine adjustment, so if you mix several channels and assign things carefully you can still have regular ailerons and flaps (maybe on the throttle stick) along with optional airbrake interactivity (switched) that blends with the wing camber (slider) so that descending from a 'speck in the sky' thermal involves zero guesswork and gives much better control than 3-position switches.
      Or not. Whatever. I just like sliders for certain variable functions. :-)

    I've got the QX7 myself. This looks a little better with the vinyl on the sides as mine is also blue and I do plan to upgrade to the M7 Hall Effect Gimbals at some point but other than that it doesn't really seem to offer much more. I removed the battery tray from mine and also have that same Taranis battery but yeah it has the same issue of having to remove it from that balance port to charge it. As for charging I simply soldered a 2S balance connector to a XT60 connector and I can now charge it on my 4 button charger.
    I'm a thumber myself but still use the neck strap for that extra security incase I drop it but I don't really have any issues with the balance bar placement, I can press the button fine like that though as you probably know the standard model doesn't require you to hold the button in to start but does to power it off which is nice as you can't accidentally turn your radio off in flight.
    I think they should of added a bit more to the S model though for the extra money such as a longer range aerial maybe.

    The springs can be easily fixed. I did it with my X9D hall gimbals. Just stretch the springs. Be careful of course. Stretch them just far enough that they no longer have a preload. Then you can use the adjuster to make them very soft as they cross center.

    If you mount a fpv screen to your tx - like i do, you will find that you need to fit the neck strap balance bracket around the other way - so that it is above the speaker - not above the on/off switch, that is the only way i can get it to balance with my 7" fpv screen attached. As for the delayed push to turn it on - i can only wish that my X7 had that, i am forever accidentally turning my tx on when i do not mean to - especially if you put it in a bag or back pack. So that is a welcome new feature in my view.

      you just buy the new hall sensor gimbals, shouldnt have to replace those for a long long time

    A major design problem, easy to fix! I found hard way yesterday! The coin battery inside is totally exposed. When I was removing the back of my radio accidentally dropped the screw in the battery bay and went inside rolling over the circuit board. Apparently touched the back of the battery (+) and shorted. The replacement board is $60! And I lost all my models because I didn’t back up on SD card.

    I so wanted to see you review the Taranis X10 , i would love to buy the X10 but they have sent it for review to only mini quad pilots , that is just so silly to send a radio like that to someone who wont review it in the way i want to see it tested .......

    The on button is that way cause issues on X7 where if you had balance peace bolted on for your neck strap.. and pushed a little on it it would turn on the radio :D ( the plastic would bend enough to push the button ) resulting in you having your radio in bag turned on whole time and arriving with flat radio... than cursing whole way home... I know its oddly specific, cause that what happened to me :D

    Bruce you cannot charge the battery in parallel with the transmitter connected if the transmitter has a soft power switch. Your charger (micro controller version) can not measure the battery (internal resistance) correctly. The delta peak time will be wrong and will shut off to soon or, in the worst case, to late. A good transmitter has a build in charging circuit that can handle Ni-MH and Lithium. Just stick the DC barrel jack of the plug pack in the transmitter, the plug pack in your wall outlet and it will charge.

      I charged my selfmade NIMH pack with paralell plug for quite eleven month now without any downside. Same technic I have on my Devo., This switch cuts
      the connection between battery and board. BTW , in the beginning of this year
      Aloft Hobbys (US dealer) ran several test on this and agreed.

    Solution to overstiff springs would be if they could supply a set of identical springs with finer gauge wire.
    The geometry would remain the same, yet give a lighter touch and still home properly.

      Either finer wire or larger diameter coils on the spring. Either should be easy to get

    I don't know about silicone wire in crimped connections, the insulation crimp can cut through the soft insulation. The insulation crimp holds better with PVC or teflon insulation than with silicone. Many times I have seen the insulation crimp on the terminal cut through the insulation over time leaving the conductor crimp unsupported which is why I have stopped using silicone wire in servo extensions. I have the DuPont/Berg HT-95 (female) and HT-102 (male) official hand tools for crimping mini-pv terminals (which is what servo terminals actually are) not generic crimpers so it's not the crimps that are the problem.

    Personally I've found applying a thumb to a cats bum offers very little control and almost instant full acceleration.

    • @powernumpty
      @powernumpty 6 років тому +1

      I can't help thinking someone should be able to fit your thumbs with accelerometers and filter out the normal shake frequency, debounced pinkies technology. Either that or replace the gimbals with glass domes that detect the touch with light, just a dimple for centre.

  • @RobB_VK6ES
    @RobB_VK6ES 6 років тому

    poor old FrSky, they can't win. One of the modifications done to the early Taranis was heavier Futaba gimbal springs. Agree if they include a rechargable battery in a newly created model then at least include a charge socket.

    Yeah about Gearbest. I got a Florion 250 with fpv and a LCD. The LCD was broke out of the box and the props we're all one color and one direction. They would not replace the LCD and I had to go hobby shop to get props. I will never buy from them again
