    Andrew. Thanks for this - it has convinced me to go for this over the Turnigy 9x. I have a very limited budget (thanks to the joy of medical retirement and a family to support) so decided to buy the cheaper HK Walrus rather than the Night Walrus and have a better radio for the future.
    I decided to buy the Walrus as my second plane to try ailerons and flaps; it's cheap and fancy a glider style plane after watching all your videos.
    I really enjoy your content - I'm an ex electronics tech, artist, bike mechanic and photographer and like your more detailed reviews and that you actually use the planes beyond the first flight so we find out the long term pitfalls.
    Thanks and all the best from sunny Devon, England.

      Best choice Graham, you have a great setup now and for the future. I have looked at the Walrus too, looks like a sweet glider with all the bits.

    Hi Andrew, thank you for your informative videos. You have guided me to cutting my own wings from foam. Thank You for introducing me to this new product from FrSky. Just tried to purchase this radio through the HobbyKing global warehouse only to find out it can not be shipped to Australia due to the battery they supply. What terrible and ridiculous foresight of HobbyKing to lose such a large market area by not being able to ship this great radio to Australia. Banggood here I come.

      Thanks Shane, that battery restriction is pathetic, and why is it not in the Aus warehouse.

    Great review Andrew, its a steal at this money...The round pot knobs also look easier to get hold of on this version of case too, although they would have been better if they were on the sides as per the old Taranis.....and its got a standard JR Bay...Nice.

    Andrew. Watching this video again I noticed an error. When installing the voice pack you used the pack for OTX2.1 because you used companion 2.1. You need Companion 2.2. At first things may seem OK but some of the sounds were renamed and remaped during the 2.2 development so you will need to manually remap the Aussie tracks but you will still be left with some "native" US sounds which do not appear in 2.1.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому +1

      Thanks Richard. Those terms are confusing and change with different manufacturers. BNF (Bind and fly) usually means there is a Spectrum receiver already in the model. PNP (Plug and play) usually means you need to add your own receiver.

    As usual a easy to understand tutorial well done again.
    On a unrelated topic I know you had trouble with flight test planes with thrust angle . I would like to ask looking from the front of the plane do I need to run a prop CW or CCW.
    I dont seem to be able to find this info on the FT videos.

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому +1

      Thanks Peter. Looking from the front, the prop should be spinning CCW, at least that's what the FT mini planes need. Not such an issue with larger planes. The vast majority of planes will be that way, it's only since quads appeared that CW props (and reversed mounting threads) became more available. I just happened to order the wrong props and motors when building the FT minis.

    Another great review mate. Silly question, if you totally ignore the costs, which of the X7 and X9D Plus do you prefer or recommend and why ?

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому +2

      Not a silly question at all Anthony. I'd go for the X9D for the side sliders and charging circuit. But a mix of the two would be even better. The X9D with the X7 case styling and selector dial would be perfect.

    A very nice radio. Although I use the Spectrum DX6 with telemetry. Does this radio support telemetry also? Nice review and maybe I'll pick one up because of the ease of over all handling and programming. I just looked it up and it does. Never mind answering. Nice job, Nice radio. I've always been a spectrum guy but adding a second radio seems smart..

    would this work on a dlg? like launch mode, a cruise etc? is the top left switch a switch that locks in position or does it return by itself?

    • @AndrewNewton

      Top right is the momentary switch, I would need to swap it to left myself. Otherwise you can program in anything you can imagine.

    The lack of even a simple socket for charging is a let down. Pleas FrSky stick the $0.30 socket on and sell a wall charger separately. In another let's shoot ourselves in the foot moment they have already announced a hall effect gimbal upgrade which will bite into the initial sales volume.

    Hi Andrew, Where did you get OpenTX 2.2? The link you gave only goes to 2.1.9

    • @AndrewNewton
      @AndrewNewton  7 років тому

      Sorry, I'm adding to the general confusion about this radio. The preloaded firmware is an FrSky version OpenTX 2.2.0 (1b43d899) 2016-12-19. I believe the OpenTX developers asked FrSky to wait a little longer for 2.2 to be developed further but they didn't listen. The "real" OpenTX 2.2.0 is not considered stable yet so I have not flashed my X7 yet, and I have removed the Aussie voice pack because it was the wrong one. The X7 version is still coming. Here's the latest OTX developments - www.open-tx.org

      I looked at my new QX7 and as you said, it says version 2.2.0 2016-12-19, EEPR 218. I'll watch the RCGroups thread and maybe update it later.

What does that mean, and does that matter for me here in Australia. I'm your neighbor, just down the road in Melbourne. G'day Andrew. From your video I think the gimbals look like the traditional old style pot type, not the newer hall effect replacement that Frsky is offering for the Taranis / X9D series. Correct??
    Updating my own comment.
    Info from oscarliang.com/taranis-q-x7-tx/
    "The gimbals are not the best, but they are okay. These are ball bearing gimbals, same as the stock X9D gimbals. They are not interchangeable with Taranis X9D gimbals (M9) because of the different size and mounting holes pattern (around 10mm smaller than on X9D). However Frsky will release the hall sensor gimbals upgrade for the QX7 soon - X7 gimbals (need to be purchased separately)."
