Kurt and Trent, I had an idea for a episode. A blind tasting with bourbons that have the name "old" in their title. (ie: Old Forester, Old Grandad, Old Fitzgerald...etc.) You can call it "OLD" Timers Day. Love the show, your honest opinions and reviews. Keep up the good work!
Oldie but goodie blind
Old No. 7
....And Very Old Barton !
Very Old Barton (100 proof one) is my favorite budget bottle. $14.99 near me
Old Hamer. Made here in Indiana
I absolutely love the father/son, good natured "clowning" dynamic that you two have for each other. Kurt, you seem to have a damn good kid there, and Trent, I can tell that you are a product of great parenting. Not trying to get all sappy here on you guys, but I just wanted to complement the relationship that you two have. You see, on May 28 of this year, I lost my father to a stroke, and sorely miss the similar back and forth banter between he and I. So Trent, you hang on to that old fart for as long as you can.
Yes, Hooten and Young are veterans, they were in Operation Gothic Serpent, or as a lot of folks know it as, Black Hawk Down, or the Battle of Mogadishu. They were some of the main characters featured in the movie
"THE" Best bourbon stream on UA-cam.....they make you feel part of the family.......and we watch them as a family.....
I almost never comment on UA-cam videos and I am a long-time fan of the channel. Being out of Portland, it's great to see Westward gaining more popularity as they are a fantastic team and an awesome distillery to go tour. I have most of their bottles, but you two NEED to get your hands on their Sourdough Whiskey as it is such a unique experience of a pour. My personal favorite of all their offerings.
I love going into that distillery to get bottles. The Cask Strength and Rum Cask are my favorite so far. I keep hearing good things about the Sourdough one..and the Sauternes was tasty
I second this, I also toured the distillery recently, and tried five or six of their offerings, and the bottle I came home with was the Ken’s Artisan Pizza collaboration made from their sourdough yeast strain. It is phenomenal!
@@jasonleavitt2559 I'll definitely have to try it. I'm looking forward to the Cognac cask. Westmoreland Liquor has a Pinot Noir cask strength store pick for $120 that I've been wanting to grab for some time

Thank you so much I'm dying over here
I live in Louisiana and JT Meleck QUICKLY became one of my favorites (not only is it local but it isn't bad like most other local whiskeys/bourbons that are made here). Price is great, taste is phenomenal, couldn't ask for more
Agreed. It’s so interesting that it’s a rice whiskey!
Just picked up a JT Meleck single barrel in Covington LA. WOW, it is phenomenal
I just ordered a bottle of Westward Cask Strength from the distillery and made sure to let them know you recommended it. Can’t wait to try it! Thanks guys!
My tastes run between both Kurt and Trenton and I was looking for a change so I tried the Westward Single Malt Cask. I was blown away by how smooth it was and it did not drink at 125 proof. I was so impressed that I got he Rum finished single malt (100 proof) also. It is just as impressive. Thanks for brining this to my attention.
I'm a big Turkey fan. I bought a bottle of Wild Turkey 101 Single Barrel. I thought it tasted just like WT 101 but, cost about twice as much. Would like to see a blind of the 2 with 4 glasses. 2 of each & see if you can tell the difference.
The JT Melecks are outstanding if you can get a cask strength store pick. I live in New Orleans and have been able to grab seven different store picks. I have been sharing the brand with coworkers while I am in Ohio for work.
This was great. Great to see rice and barley on the bartop. My dad and I were just lamenting the import tax on Scotch. We just aren't going to pay $60+ for 750ml bottles of whiskey.. we can't. And it would be so exciting if American Single Malt was coming up as a domestic barley whiskey option for regular folks, but it's not. They're charging $60+ just like the imports, yet without the import tax in the equation. So, yeah, no, American Single Malt. IIf you want more American customers, charge American prices, not prices that are same as imports from Scotland.
Balcones Distilling has several barley whiskies. The only one I've had is the Lineage Texas Single Malt, which is $40 here. It's not an American version of Scotch - it has the fruitiness of a 100 barley mash bill, but the aromas and flavors are intense and dense and forceful. It has both dark notes, and bright tropical notes, plus the distinct "Balcones touch" that comes from the combination of toasted barrels and the Texas climate. In my judgment it's worth $60, and I'm glad it isn't, because $40 is usually the upper end of my budget.
Living in the great Pacific Northwest, I am really familiar with the Westward line from Oregon- phenomenal!!! I still feel like its relatively unknown, Check out the stout version!
November 3 is my Dad's birthday. So, I would be thrilled if that day became SLB Basement Bourbon Day!
Found the Westward Cask Strengh at my local store for a $100 in Texas. Only had 3 bottles left.
Westward is awesome and the Cask Strength is my favorite. Bitter sweet others are going to find this hidden gem. Might have to pick up another bottle before it takes off. Great video as always.
Mia and the JT Meleck folks are awesome! The cask strength picks are fantastic.
Glad you are coming to visit Still Austin here. Hopefully run into you guys and give you a sample of this years Monster Mash release that came out last week!
You guys definitely need deeper dive videos into the Westward and Hooten Young bottles. They sound fantastic.
I love Westward cask strength, I only crack into that bottle on special occasions.
J.T. Meleck Distilleries is about three hours away from Kiln, MS. It is worth the trip to visit Crittenden Distilleries and do a tour. Please consider it and try their bonded bourbon. At least look for it while in LA and give it a review. It's a non-sourced, local, craft distillery. The first bottle they released was a four year that super good for a small company.
I live about 40 minutes from the JT Melek distillery. I have to say they make a fantastic whiskey. I do have a single barrel cask strength of it and it's turned up quite a bit. Phenomenal whiskey.
Don’t pass up the bison grass vodka, zabrowka fantastic. Awesome back story as well.
I would love if y’all reviewed the Hooten Young 15 barrel proof… I have seen next to no reviews of it and it’s one of my favorite sips. I would like to know what the pros think!!??
I just finished my bottle of Westward CS and can’t wait to travel to the NW and get another, fantastic bottle!
Great episode- Thank you so much Rebecca! These types of episodes get the guys and me and my husband to step out of our usual go to bourbons. After Trenton’s reaction to the Westward American Single Malt we found it at a great liquor store near our son’s in San Jose, California (Royal Liquor).
Anyway Trenton you were 💯 on the chocolatety-malty taste! I never would’ve bought this on my own without this Vlog- thanks again Rebecca, Trenton & Kurt, great find! Fruit forward first with a super unique chocolate-malt finish and nice Kentucky hug at the end. Great new edition to our collection!
Great blind. You gave me 3 bottles to try. Thanks Rebecca 🥃
Catching up on your videos. Love Hooten Young 12 yr! They are veteran owned.
Just ordered the JT Meleck. Hard to find where I live so I paid nearly as much for shipping as the bourbon. Thanks for the recommendation!
Picked up a Westward Cask Strength a couple weeks ago from VA ABC on clearance for $50, really looking forward to cracking it open!
Half off is a good deal.
If you are going to visit Still Austin you should stop in Waco at Balcones. They released a single malt last week that is amazing: Cataleja.
Do you recommend a bourbon advent calendar?
The Westward CS is available here in CA at Total Wine for $91.49, might have to check it out.
knew it was westward from the thumbnail blank lol. time for you guys to get into some westland too
They have a store in the Portland airport! I bought a couple bottles for $90 each on my way out on PDX in May! It is amazing!!
Great show. I just found the Westward Cask Strength at Binny's for $99. Haven't been able to find the JT Meleck yet.
I hope to be able to try y’all’s JT Meleck pick
Trent purposefully eats the weirdest foods before tasting these bourbons LOL gonna need you to try some of these after eating a normal meal LOL
Uncle Nearest 1884 - is it a tobacco leaf note? I grew up in Owensboro and my grandfather had tobacco, so I can remember the smell but I know most people would have no idea about green tobacco. And being covered in the sap during harvesting. But those tobacco worms were juicy and delicious! 😝
Westward Stout and Pinot are delicious. Have multiple in my collection.
I wish my nose was half as good as either of you. I can pick up thr proof but not much more than Carmel notes. Sitting here watching you while sipping Cedar Ridge Bottled in Bond Rye, which is excellent!
Westward Cask Strength is $94.00 But if you can get it Ken's Sourdough is my absolute favorite!
Great job by Rebecca in picking the whiskies for this blind. I have been wanting to try the J.T. Melek since I saw the review you did on it a while back but have not found it anywhere yet. By the way, the Westward Cask strength is $99.95 on their web site. Westward is available in Columbus but I'm not sure which ones they have or how they are priced here. I'm going to head over to the liquor store today and find out. Thanks for a great video all!
Thank you!! 😂😂
I have a Binny's Store pick of a Westward American Single Malt finished in Deschutes Stout Barrels for a year. It's 126.1 proof, and it is fantastic. Westward is putting out some hitters!
Trent if you want to try a great drink with heavy cream try this sneaky Bev.
2 oz whiskey
1 oz kahlua
1/2 oz baileys Irish cream
Pour over ice and stir
Then top with
1/2 oz heavy whipping cream
Gently mix
Cheers 🥃🥃
I have not had the 12 year, but the 15 year Hooten Young is really good and higher proof point too.
Awesome video boys! Bring out the brick...cheers!😂
Westward cask strength is great stuff. I have a bottle. For what it offers, it isn't too costly. Another single malt that is dessert-like in a roughly similar way is Paul John Mithuna, from India. It is intense and complex. Unfortunately, its available is spotty, and it is rather expensive. Still, I'm glad I splurged on a bottle - I have been enjoying it. I also have a bottle of J.T. Meleck, but it is a cask strength single barrel pick. It's good too. Maybe the next time I get into my whisky, I should taste all three of these side by side.
Trenton, that note you found on the Uncle Nearest 1884 would be something I'd describe as "vegetal". Not quite earthy, but having that plant-like chlorophyll note to it.
I can't wait to have so many whiskey bottles where my wife can blind them for me and my friends.
That Westward is really good. Just got that as well...
I covet that Westward Cask Strength!! Sits on my top shelf.
I also own that J.T. Meleck but as a single barrel called Rice, Rice, Baby! A favorite pour to drop on my bourbon drinking buddies who are always surprised by rice whiskey
Can you guys review old settler Kentucky bourbon I’m curious what y’all would think of that it’s not hard to find just curious what y’all think
Y'all are in for a blast with the folks at jt Meleck. Enjoy your pick! Be sure to go to Social Southern Table and Bar if y'all come a little further east to Lafayette! Wont regret it at all
love blind reviews. so awesome. want to try the meleck. But now also want to try that WEstward. thanks for awesome review and cheers
Get the CS version of the Meleck. Amazing stuff.
I love the Hooten & Young. Interesting Mash bill 99% corn
Got a question for y’all (maybe a good video idea?) Does temperature affect the smell and taste of bourbon? Like just above freezing, room temp, or even like warmed up?
We’re in New Orleans! Let us know if you get close and we’ll show you guys around. Cheers
I’ll be at Still Austin tomorrow.
Try the JT Meleck Single Barrel Cask Strength. Great pour.
Hearing lots of good stuff about the JT Meleck, hopefully it makes it's way to Colorado
Maybe you could do a milk wash on different bottle taste test?
I'm in Louisiana and JT Meleck is good. Still Austin and JT barrel picks from you guys are sure to be great! Si that something your viewers would be able to get or are they spoken for already?
Kurt, have you had any of the Glendronach cask strength batches? They are supposedly sherry bombs finished in oloroso and PX. Batch 12 is out now and you can still find batch 11. With a little hunting you can still find batch 10.
Batch 12 is really nice. Found it in my store for $100. Beautiful sherry bomb with some lovely vanilla nuttiness that drinks very nice for the proof. It reminded me a lot of what I enjoy about the Glen 15
@@Aj9Livess I ended up buying batch 11. It was also $100. The guy at Binny’s absolutely loves anything by Glendronach and he said you can’t go wrong with batch 11 or 12. He said batch 10 was the best one in a few years and thought they couldn’t get any better until 11 and 12 came out 😂
Stop at Kooper Family Whiskey in Ledbetter TX on your way to Austin. They have great whiskey too. You won’t regret it.
Fun times. Loved this one 👊
Happy Bourbon Day!!
I call me chicken nuggets “chuggets”, so I’m with you Trent!
I think this episode should become a thing. Just have some really really random theme to it. Like purple on the bottle or all start with the same letter.
The uncle nearest here in New Hampshire it is $99.99
On the hunt for some JT Meleck and Westward! Who is the outro music - love it!
Ha! I reloaded the page and now the music selections are listed.
Tennessee whiskey being filtered through sugar maple charcoal is a subtractive process, not additive. It is, in essence, activated carbon, so it acts much like a filter does.
Happy Bourbon Day! Cheers!
I have the CS JT MELECK and it's amazing
94$ at TW here in CT
Great video!
Norm “Hoot” Hooten was a Delta Force operator and I believe another SOF guy named Young is his partner in this whiskey
Pegs. How philosophical! The mind boggles!
Awesome video
Ikka Coffey Grain Japanese Whiskey... you need to try it and review it...
Chawklety and Foodgy lol my new favorite nose notes
JT Meleck is phenomenal if you can get a store pick. I live in nearby lafayette so I see it everywhere.
I prefer the uncle nearest 1856 much more. I'll have to checkout the westward .
$98 around here and in Texas. Not cheap.
Cheers 🥃 Thanks for another fun and enjoyable show. And most of all Happy Basement Bourbon Day. 🥃😂
Trenton and Kurton with the mix up!
J.T. Meleck and heavy cream in the SodaStream😂
Someone gave my dad a bottle of uncle nearst and i kinda think it tastes like a tropical whiskey
The bottle of westward is $100 for anyone wondering
I used to have some nice pegs on my old bmx bike
Pretty much guarantee that this is the first bourbon tasting video invoking the Uno reverse card 😅😂
This is a tough call on whether or not Trenton has to eat a brick. I suppose it depends on how pedantic you want to be. Nowhere on that bottle is the word bourbon, as far as I'm aware. It is a Tennessee Whiskey as deemed by the producer. However, all Tennessee Whiskey technically qualifies to be bourbon and is so considered bourbon by NAFTA. I think, on technicalities, Trenton has to eat a brick! 😂
And how would you like your brick prepared, Sir?
Every day is SLB Bourbon Day! 🎉
I am shook that Trenton picked a single malt as his favorite. THERE IS HOPE! 😂
I want to see the Crab Trapper whiskey from Tamworth Distilling thrown into a blind 😂
You guys gotta get w Your Drinking Buddy -- he's equally insane as you two and has an acute palate. And appetite for booze.
Trenton. If I were a cow I’d love this bourbon. LMAO
Every day is "Basement Bourbon Day".
💯
Cream and Bourbon? Yes! In 1985, I was introduced to a shot using Wild Turkey with Heavy Cream poured carefully on top. The cream looks like clouds in the whiskey. Delicious.
