Can this thing de-throne the Rode juggernaut that is the Rodecaster Pro II?
Let's take a look at the first podcast showing by Mackie, and see if this challenger is worthy!

Thank you Aiden. I enjoy your insights, and your quirky self-deprecating humor as well. I'm glad I tripped over your channel and I plan on sticking around.
Love the name, chungus. Great job.
The differential between this and Rode is pure chonk.
It seemed an obvious choice
Gris the true papi, shi now way,YOU NOT 😂😂😂😂😂😂
If anything like my Mackie mixers - will be on my list of future upgrades. Always been a Mackie fan since my DJing days and remote broadcasting - and based on your review here sounds like they are off to actually a solid start into the podcasting and such arena.
Good video as always Aiden. Thanks!!
Glad you liked it!
2 BIG advantages of DLZ compared to others, 2 stereo analog inputs via an audio interface you can add 4 more microphones and there is automix, it would be good if you could activate it on all channels
Thanks for the extremely informative video! I’m considering the DLZ Creator very seriously. I know the Easy Mode was not to your liking (yet), and I would consider my level between Easy and Enhanced with just enough knowledge (so far) to be dangerous, haha. Would you consider this product something that I could learn from and grow with as I progress into all these audio things you guys talk about that was foreign to me just a few months ago? To me it seems so, but I would appreciate your opinion. The microphone bug got me first so the mics I will be using are the SM7B, the RE320 and the RE20. I’m a seasoned graphic designer and I find this new medium fascinating and useful. Thanks again, I look forward to other videos on the DLZ Creator.
Yeah it's a fun unit.
Learning the pro might take a bit...but if you're in no rush
Well the specs are pretty good. And 12 tracks is useful. It's a lot of desk space though. Looking forward to the comparison video.
I discovered your channel lately and enjoyed your videos. Someone who is using the original Roadcaster Pro 1. Would you recommend this unit? Or how about the Creator XS? If at all.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Glad I can be helpful!
To be honest...I LOVE the DLZ...and I am currently working on the XS version...you will have to wait til Monday for my opinion on that.
As for which one?
The RCP2 has the edge over the DLZ in my mind...but it is slim.
Also...they both offer a few different things that might be the sell for you.
But if you think the DLZ is the right one for you...yes...it is a fantastic piece of gear
@DarkCornerStudios So, how do you like the XS compared to his big brother? Thank you very, very much.
Thanks for the detailed review! I am considering buying the DLZ but have heard some people talking about this mixer does have some latency up to 5ms. Have you experienced any noticable latency? And how does this mixer do for music production / karaoke?
It's fine.
5ms is stunningly low.
I highly doubt ANYONE could perceive that.
And while I know there are people that claim to...I do NOT believe them.
I have known some of the best ears in audio...and they struggle to pick up on 10ms.
So...do with that info what you like
@@DarkCornerStudios Good to know, thank you!
Do you happen to know if the FX/EQ on each input channel can be turned on/off independently for each output? (for example say if I want headphone #1 to play audio mix including EQ and Effects, and headphone #2 to not include any EQ from any of the inputs, would that be possible?)
Also do you know if the parameters of auto ducking (like delay or volume) can be adjusted?
@@94GUNDAM no and I believe so
Do you know if its possible to add additional mics if you needed more than 4?
Not at the moment...but there are rumors with that ethernet cable
Soooo, you and I have the same things in common, I am using the same mic and I have mine at about 70db. I actually bought it for doing voice-over work. I worry about having to have my gain up to 70db I would love to be able to get a good sound in the neighborhood about -6db on my daw.
Does it record a stereo mix down and individual tracks?
Yes
My DLZ Creator has frozen twice in 2 weeks of Purchasing... Any thoughts.... Planning on returning
Looks cool.
GOing with this or Pro 2. Need whichever one that will let me grab audio and use my mic on my stream PC, Game PC and ps5 Mic and game audio. Whichever does all I'd pick
Interesting piece of gear. If I was still in AM/FM radio I could see this in a production room, newsroom or auxiliary studio. But is it really appreciably better than the Rodecaster Pro (both editions)? Rode designed the original one from the ground up with podcast production in mind and by upgrades improved it. When the pandemic started I know broadcasters gobbled the Rodecaster up for staff working from home. With some tweaks it's a little radio station in a box. Mackie seems to have picked up on this as well. Is it worth more than Rode? I'm not sure (nor am I sure that the second generation Rodecaster Pro is a better value than the first). For broadcast work, it's cheaper than an Arrakis board which has dubious build quality and less features. Again, I could easily see this for auxiliary use.
But let's get down to podcasting and remote work. I have a Rodecaster Pro, Focusrite Vocaster 2 (yet to use), Zoom P4 and an old mixer with adapters that actually works for recording MixMinus phone interviews after you get everything set up. Hands down the one that gets used the most for my national podcast is the Zoom P4 now selling for $149 USD. Is it the best build quality? Nope. Best preamps and wizardry? Nope. Best design, especially for heavy use? Also nope. That said, the little bugger simply works and turns out decent quality recordings. I toss it into a $16 case from War-Mart with a couple of SM58's, little tripod stands and short cables and I can record from almost anywhere (using a wall USB adapter is highly recommended vs. batteries). It does such a good job that my Rodecaster is seldom used. That said, yes the P4 could stand some improvements (which would drive the cost up) but they are mostly matters of convenience. It's easy to understand why and how the P4 gets overlooked but it kicks ass, especially at its price point and portability.
If someone is starting out podcasting/streaming (the P4 can serve as an interface, too) lets look at the real numbers (USD):
Z4 - $150
2-SM58 - $200 (buy on sale and use the $20 savings for windscreens)
Cables (phone and XLR) - $30
Mic stands - $20
SD card - $10
Earbuds - $15
Add my personal preference - 2 Fetheads - $180 - improve gain/sound quality, less noise.
Pretty darn affordable. Of course the Rodecaster Pros and clones have additional features, better build quality, etc., but the dispositive question is whether you really need and will use that? To me, the real benchmark is the P4 if you're doing an audio only podcast. (For chits and grins, I'd like to see the higher end gear compared to the P4.). Yes, there are some compromises but must are easily worked around.
(And then there's "reverse sticker shock" where something may seem too cheap to be any good. I remember when Xerox introduced a $499 multifunction printer/scanner/copier/FAX and had trouble selling them because customers thought it couldn't possibly be any good. It was.)
I agree. Rodecaster Pro, P8 and P4 plus a Tascam Portacapture X8 and if it needs to be fast or portable, the P4 always gets the job done. It’s crazy value for money.
Do you really need inline pre-amps if it has 80db of gain available?
@@seanwebb605 No. Do you?
@@dickginkowski6071 I wouldn't think so.
Does it have a "That's what she said" button?
Maybe a 1/2 version like the Rodecaster 2 Duo...
Perfect!
For the most part I like Mackie, with that aside your comments about the faders are consistent with my experience.
Needs more combo jack inputs. 4 with preamps is not enough for a mixer. I need at least 10. The Yamaha DM3S or DM3D is a peg above this albeit a bit more expensive but I like the Mackie UI better.
I have a feeling that ethernet port is gonna allow for more channels
better you than me .. those first four faders canting is a complete stopper for me and my ocd haha
It actually fits my left hand perfectly.
Lol
Did it come from the Leftorium?
Mmm the Big Mack 😊
I don't think it's a Rode killer completely, however, this is the first company that actually makes Mixers to make a mixer. Lol. I think it's more suited for musicians where Rode missed the mark on.
I think as this thing fills out...it is going to be a compelling option for anyone recording audio
@@DarkCornerStudios I'm sure with another firmware update, Rode could close the gap musicians but you're right. It's definitely compelling especially those coming from a mixer background. I love my RCPII but it looks cute next to the Mackie lol
@@DarkCornerStudios Could easily see them in radio stations for production, newsroom and auxiliary studio.
@@dickginkowski6071 totally agree
My biggest question is the round-trip latency; RODE II seemed to have a lot of hoopla out of the gate over their latency issues, no direct-monitoring.
I don't see it with Rode.
Never experienced anything latency wise worth mentioning.
Think it's just something people read and parrot
It is $1079 Canadian and Amazon is making a hard push to pair it with multiple SM7bs. Let's assume you go with their suggestion and buy the unit and two SM7bs. That's well over $2000 to start.
Oh there is no question it is expensive
Honestly tho after looking at this for a while.
I kinda want them to make a bigger version of this
Lol...
Do you hate deskspace?
Mac Attack!
With the recent Purchase of Mackie, will Rode continue to support the DLZ or will this just become a $800 paperweight like the Go XLR?
Looks like Mackie us staying in control of their lineup...so the DLZ continues!
Thank you very much!!! Keep up the Great Work!!! @@DarkCornerStudios
Grandpa woke up and just sat in front of a computer without ironing his shirt..
Odd insult.
Why though?
@@DarkCornerStudios he's what's commonly referred to as a troll.
@@madness8556 yeah...just really bad at it.
@@DarkCornerStudios yep and being a bad troll equates to also being an idiot. Keep up the great work!
@madness8556 lol...too true...and thanks!
Brought to you by the creators of The Big Knob... Chungus!
If you could release a product called that...it'd be great.
Great video. I bought the DLZ and I love it. There are some quirks but I'm sure they will get ironed out. I love the size, however I'm 6'9 so I guess it fits. haha I think there is something wrong with your faders, mine are not tilted and seem consistent. I have the original RCP which is no comparison obviously. I think the RCP II and DLZ are just different beasts. Like you said we'll just have to see how the DLZ develops and how well they support it. One thing for sure competition is a good thing. Let's face it Rode made the DLZ possible.
Fascinating about the faders.
Lolz.
Guess mine is just special
Where is an information about very important thing for people recording discussions - automixer? This is THE THING for me, which Rode missed in RodeCasters.
Oscar The Grouch has a podcast but it sounds like trash. I hear that he has been recycling ideas.
Rodecaster Pro 2 quality is very bad :/ plastics are opening
Rode look out.....
. Boss gigcaster
. DLZ
They want in as well
