any one watching this era HAS to remember we DIDN'T have a clue what these charters looked like. We had to draw in full size what the 8 bit pixels sort of looked like. Even box art could not agree. So don't get on my case about Link, Zelda, Ganon, Mega Man, Kid Ikaris, Mario, Luigi, Toadstool , King Koopa, Big Mouth, Simon, or any of the others. Game didn't have rules. they were left to who we chose to imagine them.
and back then 80s kids were VERY rooted in the "Boys vs Girls" mentality of Never kiss, gills are icky , name calling and rudeness and fighting and violence meant you loved each other, sexual harassment wasn't a phrase that existed and full on nudity was perfectly acceptable . Objectifying and dominating women was normal and accepted.
The world that turned us against Link and James Bond and John Wayne and Bill Cosbey didn't exist yet.
Sexism and racism were how NORMAL people acted. the be called a racist you had to do WROSE things. to reject sexism was to be seen as "Gay" which was the worst thing you could be.
the words people say today like "Gender identity" and "Gaslighting" and " No mean No" didn't exist. Infact phrases like "No means yes" were encouraged.
The Super Show, Captain N, Zelda, Pac-Man , Q*Burt, Rubix Cube, they all come from two places
1. Art could be ANY THING we made up. The toy or game has NO lore WE decide what that lore is. There is NO time Line, No Canon. No wrong way to depict them.
2. "Excuse Me Princess" etc wasn't rude it was how ALL boys and girls interacted. Hating some one meant you loved them. Hitting them meant you loved them. Pulling there pigtails meant you loved them. The two genders were always competing to prove who was better and always admitting they are incapable of swapping there assigned rolls. It was a rivalry.
3. and if I had to cover a 3rd thing that was normal, non-white races only existed to prove how not racist we were. Body Shaming was normal and vulgarity was common. Gay was an insult and a lot of modern ideas simple did not exist. Every thing had to fir a toy, target a demographic, make money and meet the standards of parents and charts, keeping it free of immitigable violence and making it educational.
Yeah, but still making Link a fuckboy isn’t really the first thing that should come to mind
