As an American, there was an added layer of perception difference because she is very German, almost Slavic in her bluntness and refusal to do the things that we Americans think of as friendly and nice. So from my perspective, she appears cold and uncaring, perhaps capable of murder, when in reality, she is just up front and doesn't wear emotion the same way we do

so she is very german and slavic? I thought germans were the stereotypical blunt, unfreindly and direct.

I really enjoyed this movie (and have a lengthy post over why I think she did/didn't do it). I do think that it (at times) felt a little bogged down, but overall it's certainly worthy of a Best Picture nomination.

This has some very interesting narrative ties to ‘anatomy of a murder’ with James Steward, an old movie (obviously) where what actually happened and who did what is very obscure. I’m quite certain the similarities are not coincidental (the unique title structure alone supports that) and would be interested in your opinion on the original, and how this compares

Sandra's defense team claims her husband committed suicide, not that he fell, the lawyer even says that claiming a fall is a bad idea because is too improbable. I know is a detail but I think is a very important one, and possible the reason why they are able to acquit her of the charges, in the documentary The Staircase (Netflix) something similar happens they try to claim a fall and in my opinion that is what ultimately make the protagonist end in jail, is just not consistent with the victim's injuries.

I think over time this movie will be recognized as the goofy, clumsy exercise in emotional manipulation that it actually is. The silly courtroom scenes are icing on the cake.

All movies are emotional manipulation. This movie is far more skilled at it than most I've ever seen. I find it hard to understand how you'd see it as goofy or clumsy. It's able to allow us multiple paths of emotional response/rection in every scene. With each interaction or new piece of evidence, we are invited to draw our own conclusions. Do we think she's a good mother or a bad mother, a terrible partner or an equal participant in a complex relationship, a murderer or a living victim of suicide? Even at the very end you still have opportunities to take different emotional pathways to the conclusion. Great movie.

I was married to that woman. I was that usurped/replaced/destroyed man. I had my moment looking out a window down at the ground. Thank God I found my spine in time.

Plenty of ‘foreign’ movies are superior to the exclusive ‘English’ language ‘Best Picture’ Oscar, and the one that comes to mind for me is ‘The secret in their eyes’, an incredibly layered Argentine film which Hollywood butchered in their reimagining (even before ‘modern audience’ times), despite a truly impressive cast.
The 2009 original won 53 awards, including an Oscar, and is the only movie I try to foist on others when talking about cinema. ‘The page turner’ is also a superb French movie that Hollywood fortunately did not attempt to ‘reimagine’ or even remake, given that the central theme, characters and tone are suffused in femininity.

If Barbie was the most overrated movie in the box office last year, Anatomy was in terms of critic and film festivals. It fails as a court room drama with a prosecutor who can only prove Sandra is a bisexual writer who writes about her own life and might not be the best mother. It fails as a post mortem of a marriage since you only get then point of view of Sandra. It fails as a thriller since there's not a moment in the film which might make you suspicious of Sandra. In the end, the only "message" of the film is men can't deal with their partner's success. Other movies have done it better, and this one just got too ambitious and, just like Barbie, never develops all the themes presented. I'm sorry, Echo, but I think you got stuckmanized by this film!!!

I appreciate the child actor is not actually visually impared, but could they not have made him have a missing limb? Or perhaps that he feels he's the wrong gender and wants to dress up in skirts? I would even settle for him being a black actor and was adopted.
I mean, they could have made him gay, at least, surely?!
It's very triggering to have him just act like this with no DEI dimension to him...
    😂😂😂

I've always maintained that the market will fill the whatever demand is left unaddressed by woke hollywood. They will continue to pump out ideological garbage and other studios outside of hollywood will give audiences what they want, which is good stories.

I think I'll like it if the actor playing their son is really blind b/c that's handi-abled representation.
Edit @4:43 turns out the kids isn't really blind (the actor) so I guess there goes authenticity.

The movie was awful. The court scenes are idiotic. The camerawork is boring. It's empty sophistication. Cannes has been a negative indicator for years.

    • @tjimicole2677
      @tjimicole2677 3 місяці тому

I found some of the court scenes to be a bit on the nose as well, like when they try to quote from her fiction book as if it's some kind of evidence of her guilt. But on the whole the way the story plays out and offers multiple interpretations of the relationship, revealing new layers to its characters, makes the movie excellent overall.

    • @tjimicole2677

It's not feminist junk at all. Sure, it has a "strong female character", but that's all. It portrays the father as weak for not being able to get over his, for lack of a better word, pussy-ness. Most feminists would hate the mother and find sympathy with the "bullied" father, but the (IMO correct) based view is he was a pathetic self-involved "victim" who by not finding a way to man up, suffered the ultimate consequence - he couldn't live with himself any longer.
The implication is that painting yourself as a victim is ultimately self-destructive. The only true way to move on from trauma is to find agency and carve out what you want out of life without expecting others to hand it to you.
      Very un-woke imo.
