  • Here is another one Sandberg - Fender Sound Comparison.
You will find my personal opinion about these two basses in the text below ⬇️.
    Sandberg California TT5 SL - Superlight.....2.7 kg.....(UNREAL !!!)
Paulownia Body / Norway Maple Neck
    Blacklabel T Pickups
    Sandberg 2 band EQ - Active/Passive
American Fender Deluxe Jazz Bass V.....4.3 kg
Swamp Ash Body / Maple Neck
    N3 Noiseless Fender Pickups
    Fender 3 band EQ - Active/Passive
    00:17 Passive Comparison
    02:06 Active Comparison
My personal observations - purely subjective!
PROS for Fender (Cons for Sandberg):
    1. Fender sound has slightly better articulated bass for my taste (but a very small difference that can be easily set with any EQ on Sandberg)
    2. Adjusting the intonation on a Fender bridge is much easier and precise by simply adjusting the saddle screws without loosening the strings (kudos to Leo Fender for that design). Adjusting the intonation on Sandberg is a lot more complicated due to the mandatory loosening of the allen key on the saddle as well as the strings, and manually moving the saddle by hand which requires several attempts.
    3. Fender does not have a neck dive (due to super light body, Sandberg has it but ONLY in sitting position).
    4. Fender body is lacquered and the finish seems quite resistant, typical for Fenders. Sandberg's body is made of Paulownia wood, it is not varnished and seems very fragile and sensitive.
    5. The fender has ''strings through body'' option.
    6. Fender preamp is a 3 band EQ with Middle pot, opposite to Sandberg which is 2 band.
PROS for Sandberg (Cons for Fender):
    1. Sandberg weighs (or light) an incredible 2,7 kg - 5,95 lbs.
    2. Sandberg has one more fret.
    3. Sandberg body geometry allows easyer access to the last frets then Fender.
    4. Sandberg neck shape is thinner and more pleasant to play (subjective feeling again).
    5. Sandberg has a "zero fret", so an "empty" string sounds more uniform with a pressed one (especialy with an older strings).
    6. Changing the strings on Sandberg is simpler because they don't go through any holes. Changing strings on a Fender is more complicated due to threading them through the body or bridge (especially with already used strings).
    7. Sandberg potentiometers seem to be of better quality. They are metal and do not move by themselves. Fender potentiometers are plastic and often inadvertently move to an unwanted position.
    8. On Sandberg preamp it is easier to notice whether the bass is in passive or active mode due to the push/pull pot, which is very accessible.
Recorded through Radial JDI Passive D.I. to Focusrite 2i2.
No DAW spices added, except a bit of compressor just on slap sample.
Darkglass Vintage Microtubes used on drive sample.
Midle EQ not used on Fender.
Both Basses with same strings Elixir Coated Nanoweb 40-125.

    Fantastic comparison!👍
I slightly prefer the sound of the Fender, and would rather not have a non-varnished finish like this particular Sandberg has.
Sandberg makes some really great basses, and I love their updated body design. However, this time the Fender wins for me.✨

As expected, the Sandberg sounds a bit more "modern" in a very nice way. It has more of a bite to it (you can really hear it with the Microtubes on), while the Fender is the classic and reliable all-round tone machine we all know very well.
Both killer basses, great comparison! 🤘🏽

What an excellent comparison. I adore the design of Sandberg basses. One of the few companies making instruments inspired by fender designs that I think actually improves on them. Was surprised the fender sounded as good as it did, though. For most of the 2000s fender’s electronics and active circuits were woefully behind their competitors at similar prices - they seemed content to let their vintage reproductions be their flagship products. It seems they are doing much better on that front now though!

The Sandberg is clearer and more articulate while the Fender has more inherent bass sound, which makes it a little more muddy sounding and a bit less balanced across the strings. The Sandberg can easily be EQ'd to sound like the Fender, but probably not the other way around.

I don’t hear much difference. I have both a Fender Jazz and a Sandberg Superlight. I love them both but the Sandberg at 5.9 pounds is so much easier on my shoulder and back. Also, the action on the Sandberg is super low with zero buzz - the Fender can’t do that. The Sandberg is the favorite of the musicians I play with and it’s the bass I play 99% of the time. Mine has some neck dive so I made a one-pound bean bag and attached it to the strap at the end pin. This makes the bass hang perfectly and it’s still super light. The Sandberg is also super responsive to the plucking hand attack, so a lighter touch works best.

Wow, great video. They really are very close, much closer than one might think. I noticed the B string sounded better to me on the Sandberg. Also the Tt SL is definitely a bit brighter especially with the treble at 70%. All in all though it is incredible how close they are. I’m sold on Paulownia, let the naysayers say what the will, light basses can sound great and kick #%*!

So impressive that the Sandberg five string bass weighs less than 3 kilos! Would the light weight cause neck dive?

Only in sitting position when bass is on my thigh. Not while I'm standing with the bass.

@@raine5300 I just updated ''under video info''. Regarding neck dive, it has it but only in sitting position. While on the strap, it does not move anywhere.

What is meant by "tone % closed"? All my SB basses have bass and treble controls. How would that work, just roll off the treble?

    • @DennisWardsTrakShak
      @DennisWardsTrakShak 9 місяців тому +1

Now I get it. in passive mode the treble knob becomes a tone knob.

@@DennisWardsTrakShak Yes 🙂that's the thing with Sandberg. Howerev, Fender has a separate Tone knob that works just in passive mode.
