I lmao'd at "Tony Stark was able to stream AM2R in a cave"
59:23 that comment aged spectacularly
i really love the ost to this game, its one of my all time favorites. sounds like a fucked up ligeti score
What's awesome about the "ost" to this game is that they embraced the limitations of the hardware and opted for ambient background noise rather than a full fledged soundtrack.
I agree. The first song is nostalgia overload for me, but the whole game's soundtrack is stellar. For a gameboy game, this is so crisp. The sound design alone is perfect. Every sound is distinct from another and it sounds great!
I still have my original pea soup GB and this cart. I remember this being a game I played on repeat during a summer road-trip. So cool to see it again.
Pea soup. Lolz
I remember when the Game Boy first came out, but my first Gameboy was the Game Boy Color
Damn Nintendo straight took AM2R to Lake Laogai.
I don't get the hate this game gets. It plays good, the idea of hunting the Metroids is cool, the music becomes progressively foreboding like it should and I think it's easier to go back to than the first game.
I have huge love for this game aside from the mechanics not aging well, but that's mainly because Super Metroid just blew everything out of the water so the most exciting movement trick is a damage boost jump. The music/ambience was awesome, and as you said fostered isolation and dread. Every Metroid past Alpha terrified me, because just when you figure out how to fight one, they throw you in a much tougher arena. The sand Betas were always the scariest for me.
@@MBGroth Yeah, the first time I played it I think I jumped out of my chair every time I walked into a Metroid.
I beat on my friend's Gameboy back in the mid 90s. It's a good game.
It has no map, it's jank. Sure back when it released it was a decent game, but not now.
No one "hates it" but it's silly to deny that, compared to titles like AM2R or other better rom hacks, Return of Samus plays like shit, looks like shit and sounds like shit.
I'm still proud of myself for buying this game in the mid 2000s after becoming a Metroid fan and working my through it and enjoying it the whole time. I have taste.
ME TOO =D. I had to play it on the big fat gameboy. And then played it again on the GBC when I was like 10 ^_^.
BAD taste. JK
This games opening level song is easily the one of the greatest songs in Nintendo history
The underground jungle area looks good as fuck with the DX hack.
We need an oats lore compilation xD. Things like bonerific, corn, scan the save room, etc
Don't forget the fog
i still don't know what "scan the save room" was originally from
@@snackythecoolguy2363 me neither. Apparently is from kaizo but I would like to watch the video
This game has the best "taking damage" sound effect ever. For my whole life I've always imagined that sound when I've gotten hurt.
I liked this game a lot though i played the AM2R version. The concept and gameplay were real fun, not sure i could have dealt with the zoomed in original format though.
Wish I had caught this live. This is one of my favorites to do 100% runs on.
people wanting him to play am2r instead, meanwhile me, who played am2r, but didn't have the tolerance to play this game, appreciate watching someone doing a thorough 100% run of it. with better colors too.
I don’t get the AM2R hate on Oats’ channel. Game is top 3 Metroid games hands down. There’s no way he hasn’t played it. Can’t speak about it which makes sense. But I don’t get the constant trolling of a masterpiece of a game made specifically by diehard Metroid fans.
I've looked into it a fair amount, apparently anyone highly involved as a Metroid runner doesn't want to touch it because of the Nintendo C&D. Its a damn shame because it's far better than the official version, but I get people wanting to protect their livelihood. Hell it would get tons of views and donations on GDQ and they won't touch it.
Big runners don’t stream or upload recorded gameplays of AM2R because it’s been taken down by the big N. Big Runners simply don’t want to jeopardize their channel with a ban.
Can't blame Oats for acting annoyed with the AM2R requests; Nintendo doesn't fuck around. That being said it's still sucks that he can't stream it; since its basically uses Super and Zero Mission as it's foundation (Both of which are his top 3).
Also, Oats when Samus Returns!!!????
Seconding, Samus Returns is worth playing
"Tony Stark was able to stream AM2R in a cave" :D
I used to really hate this game for some reason, but I’ve really warmed up to it now, I even enjoy it more than Samus Returns. The last part of the game from the first Omega Metroid to the credits is one of the best moments in the whole series imo (credit to AM2R for flawlessly replicating it)
ohhhh pretty!
is this a _colorized_ version of the game?
It doesn't look like simple gameboy red-green color switch mode
Beat this game in the 90s on OG GB, played remake and was like WTF is up with the green crystals? Now I see. I should have played this through a few more times.
Is there a rom hack of this game that displays more area in the screen? (Not AM2R or the remake). Just this classic game that shows more on the screen. Like more resolution if you know what I mean.
Late response but no, the GB/GBC resolution is pretty much set in stone at 160x144. Theoretically possible for a modded emulator to emulate a bigger screen, with games patched to work with the new resolution, but I don't think anything like that has ever been done for the GB/GBC.
i'd love a Proper 2d/3d remake of metroid 2 in the style of other M, now that would be sick
This was my first metroid, but not in color. Played on the original game boy. Best game.
I got this game along with an ice-blue Game Boy Pocket back in the day. Played the hell out of it. Definitely a classic, even if it gets somewhat confusing at times.
Oh return of Samus I played this but I got stuck on the queen Metroid
The baby.
Damn I can't wait to see that vid
Oasssss are you going to play the prime games too?
Some of the music in this game sounds like the gameplay from Alley Cat for DOS.
I want you to play AM2R Oats! It’s soooo amazing!
It's minor, but there is a hack to fix the messed up blaster once you switch to missiles for the first time.
I'm glad Oats recognises that this game is better than Metroid 1. I played this on my GBC back in the day and it's hard without a map. Just for information I recently bought a copy of this game on a GBA cart so I can play it on my GBA
While I love Metroid Prime I like to believe they take place in a different universe or maybe later in the timeline because it kinda undermines some abilities that were introduced in Metroid 2 and Super Metroid
In Prime Series you get the Gravity, Phazon, light, dark suits, power bombs , super missiles , plasma, wave and other beams, grapple beam and 9ther abilities that were first introduced in M2 and later SM
Also because SM was the first to instroduced all the recognizable abilities
It doesn't take place in a different universe, but the stories are usually viewed as separate.
What's this mod called?
the EJRTQ colorization. There's a couple versions; you'll want to look for the more recent and stable one.
@@SoapAgent Thanks dude
You should have lowered game volume for this one... Had to keep lowering it because it was causing a migraine.. but I couldn't hear you anymore lol
Is there an actual reason he wont play AM2R?
Nintendo really doesn't fuck around with people playing AM2R, much less stream it
@@darksoulist5945 From what I've seen, Nintendo hasn't actively done anything since the original DMCA. They certainly have not stopped the updates that the community has continued.
@@CraigKostelecky They can't stop it, they know that, they aren't stupid.
What they did is effectively disrupt the hype early right after release and for the most part it's stayed as a pretty quiet thing only a subset of the internet even knows is still ongoing.
As well, while it's allowed to be streamed, and nothing seems to come of it if you do, no one really wants to take that chance when they actually have something to lose so it mostly stays with the small streamers who often haven't gotten big enough for this to be their full time job.
This is Oats' income, he's not going to jeopardize it over a single game.
As well Nintendo doesn't seem to care anymore, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't if it got big enough. Likely it would just be VOD deletion, but even that is income lost.
wait... plasma is in this game? I never found it.
Also, spring ball is the best powerup and I wish it was in dread, though cross-bombs are cool too.
@@Korhanne ......Your uh.....joking about Spring Ball not being in dread right?
@@ChaoticFrenziedStar Sounds like he never tried pushing B while in morph ball mode, lmao
@@ChaoticFrenziedStar I misspoke, it was spiderball I meant. whoops.
@@Korhanne Ah, yeah Spider ball would've been cool, I personally would've loved Boost Ball, and make it as useful as some of it's other appearances
How did the Federation know about the Metroids unless the Pirates already used them somewhere?
The stories for both NES Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission had GF deep-space research scientists discover one (or more) Metroid(s), possibly in suspended animation, on SR388. They found them (and found out *about them*) before the Pirates ever did, deeming their existence a grave enough threat that once the Pirates stole them from the GF research vessels (and once the Pirate stronghold on Zebes was identified) GF military forces attempted to neutralize all threats.
They couldn't do so, and were forced to retreat. So Samus Aran was contracted to do what the GF military could not: destroy any Metroids in Pirate possession, any Pirates opposing her, and ultimately the Mother Brain computer complex.
With all yhe mouth noises, he should ASMR, not AM2R.
Another Super Metroid Remake?
Metroid 2 was the first video game I ever owned after I got my game boy in 1992. I've beaten it countless times and i love it to death. Definitely better than metroid 1. Of course I acknowledge Super Metroid is objectively better though.
Actually yeah, this game *does* suck. The bomb shouldn't disable the spider ball.
I love your feelings on children. They're fuckin gross
only if it's actual 3D, not that pretend 2.5D sidescroller stuff 🙏
I have _never_ liked 2.5d sidescrolley stuff
Does anyone know what hack he's using to play this?
metroid2 refide
this looks like the EJRTQ Colorization patch, which basically turns it into a legit GBC game. maybe the colorization was incorporated into another patch that actually made gameplay changes but I haven't gotten far into the video. I recently played through this game with the colorization patch while revisiting the 2D Metroid games and I'm never going back to the unpatched original if I can avoid it, the patch is fantastic.
neither of these are the correct one (EDIT: EJRTQ is correct lol), but it led to me to search for the first suggestion, which then led to me finding the one in the vid lmao.
the hack is called the ASK 2017 Color Edition (EDIT: actually not).
EDIT: i actually went ahead and did more research and it seems like the EJRTQ and ASK 2017 hacks are the same or maybe one of them is built/based on the other? they look very similar, but with some differences. notably, i know "ASK 2017" was a rename by the creator from their original name of the hack, but on the webpage for it, nowhere is the original name stated. the creator does not list their name either lmao. this is all very interesting
EDIT EDIT: yup, the version Oats is playing is indeed the EJRTQ hack, which is a revision and improvement on the ASK 2017 hack (formerly just called EJRT). the original hack had a number of bugs and quirks that were undesirable, and the EJRTQ version seems to fix those, make the colorization even better, and make the game run as intended. if you took the time to read this entire comment, i say to you, my friend, that i recommend using the EJRTQ hack over the other one.
