- You might find that over time, your Canon 16-35 mm L Series lens becomes loose at the top of the lens. I have been using mine for over 10 years and just noticed this problem.
At first i thought it would need to be sent into Canon to have it fixed, but if you've got 3 minutes to spare and a Philips #0 watchmakers screwdriver you can do it your self and save time and money. - Навчання та стиль
Thanks for this! My manual focus ring was stuck and Canon Canada said it could not be repaired as they don't service this lens anymore. I googled the issue and found your video. 3 of the little screws underneath the rubber ring had all come loose. 4 minutes with the proper screwdriver and all is good once again. Whew!
Great, glad it worked.
This is a problem I’ve been dealing with all day. So thankful I found this! Thanks
Glad the video was helpful!
Same - broke out the heavy gear yesterday, first time in a lone time (cell phones are amazing these days). Noticed my 16-35 wasn't focusing, and the manual ring wouldn't turn at all. Watched the video - and sure enough. Screw driver on order - thank you all.
This is such a lifesaver! I had exactly the same problem and when I pulled the rubber ring saw that the screw got jammed. Thank you for this tutorial!
You are most welcome. Glad it was helpful!
Total legend for this share - I have been without my lens for months while I got around to sending away for repair - and now I've fixed it myself thanks to your video. THANKS again 🙏🏿 ❤ 🎸
Awesome. So glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this, I just bought this lens and was so disappointed that the manual focus ring kept getting stuck, this video helped me fix it in two minutes and now it’s perfect, thanks again
You're very welcome! Glad it helped!
Thanks so much! Worked like a charm. I even tightened my 70-200mm using the same method. Saved me some $$$ for sure!
Glad it helped!
DUUUUUDE. So glad I stumbled across this video. I saw my friend copy of this same lens and noticed his was much tighter at the end than mine was. Super easy fix! Thanks for the upload!
Glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Great. Thanks for posting. This saved me a trip to the camera repair shop. The issue I had was that the focus ring would occasionally not turn and would need some wiggling to get going. One of the screws was lose and was catching in the round opening. Thankfully the screw didn’t come off completely.
Great. Glad it worked!
I once fixed my Canon EF-S 18-200mm barrel wobble to a success and gave me a confident to now fix this lens. Although I thought "Okay. This is an L lens. Do it reeeaaaally carefully".
This is *way* easier than the 18-200. The tutorial video alone is 16 minutes and essentially need to tighten a couple of screws as well. That thing has an incredibly complicated build.
Just noticed I had the exact same problem. My screw was completely out. I need to slip a fine knife blade to loosen the rubber grip ring. It helped me to easily move the rubber grip and expose the missing screw. Thanks bunches!
You’re welcome. Yes it can be hard to get access but once you get to the screw it’s easily fixed. Glad the video was helpful👍
This just worked on my 16-35mm mk II. Have a trip coming up and worried it would not be fixed in time and would cost a load! This vid and a £2 screwdriver set later and good as new. You are my hero.
Awesome to hear that! So glad it solved the problem. Enjoy your trip!
Mine was locking up last evening and I thought I would have to send it to Canon for repairs but I found your video today and the fix worked great. Thanks for this!
Great, glad it worked.
Thanks a lot! The zoom ring on my Tamron 18-270 was stuck, and I thought I would need to send it for repair ($$). As it happens, a similar screw is hidden under the zoom rubber band. I fixed my lens in about 2 minutes!
Great to hear that it worked on the Tamron too. Thanks for watching and for letting us know.
I've got a canon 18-55 kit lens where the manual focus ring is very loose. Because it is a kit lens the ring itself is corrugated plastic (no rubber grip}, and no obvious tightening screws. For this particular lens geometry i have found this hack, where I can use a strip of velcro type gardening cane tie, which has the hooks on one side and the soft furry side on the other. If you cut a length greater than the circumference of the lens barrel and rap it furry side against the barrel around and secure with the overlap, you can position the strip half on the focus ring and half on the stationary part of the barrel where the Canon name. is. The furry contact grips the corrugated ring, but slides smoothly over the barrel and provides enough friction not to move once focused.
Worked for me too! Thanks, I was scared I would have to send it for repair!
Great to hear!
I was out in the field and this happened to me and the fix WORKED, however when i opened it up, the small screw fell out as i was looking for a small enough screwdriver.
Does anyone know where to buy a replacement screw?
the screw stopped my manual focusing working as it was sitting out of the screw hole, nice simple video fixed in 30 secs, if it comes loose again I will put a dab of loctite on
Do you happen to know what size those screws are and were to buy them
Thank you! That screw was getting my focus ring stuck.
You're most welcome!
It worked! Thanks. I couldn't turn the manual focus and it was that damn screw lol. Thanks again
Glad it worked for you! Thanks for the feedback!
Interesting…A secondhand seller has one of these lenses for sale at an insane steal of a price, claiming it works perfectly but makes a rattling/screw loose type of noise…I wonder if this is all that is needed to fix their gear…Food for thought. Thanks a lot!
yeah it might be that simple and if so, sounds like a bargain. There could be other issues if it is noisy but certainly if the price is right worth looking into it.
@@Touchtechnologyreview thanks for the reply. Any suggestions on what I should test when checking it out? It’s the first time I’m looking into a secondhand lens with potential problems like this.
@@daviday87 Check both the back and front glass elements for scratches. That would be the main thing. If you can bring your camera in you would want to check the autofocus works OK. If it only makes sounds when adjusting the zoom that is one thing but if it makes odd sounds when focussing it might be an issue. So best thing would be to test it with your camera taking photos at different distances close up and far away to examine the auto focus.
@@Touchtechnologyreview appreciate it. Thanks!
Great! Thank you very much for this tip - now my lens is like new😁
Great!
Great I will try this! Does it work for the zoom ring as well? Mine has a very slight play (.5-1 mm)
Cheers man saved me a massive headache!
Anytime man. Cheers!
You just saved me so much money
Great to hear!
Great tip! My lens makes a light clunking noise when shaken back and forth. Is this normal?
Thanks! Mine doesn't seem to make any noise when shaking since I tightened the screw. As long as it is minor and the lens is not loose it may not be a big issue.
Oh my goodness! Thank you SO much for sharing this! The screw on my 16-35 was completely loose and preventing it from autofocusing. THRILLED that I could fix this myself. It's a Christmas Miracle. haha!!! Thank you, again!
Glad to hear that it was helpful! You are very welcome! Have a great Christmas and New year!
Hello, Do you know why my lens's focal length is moving the opposite way? At 28mm its extended, long, at 70mm its shorter, retracted!
LIFE SAVER
Glad to be of assistance.
Great tip and it worked, thank you!!!
Great to hear 👍
Hi is this solution work for zoom ring bro ?
thanks for the video, it helps me :D
Glad to hear that!
Useful content. Thanks and TU
Happy to help
Thank you so much for your video :-)
I have an issue with my 18-135 STM lens where it is stuck between 24 and 35 and I'm unable to zoom in or out although the lens is good when I capture images as is. Do you think opening it up to unscrew and screw up would work in this case? Apparently, the repair cost seems quite high as you mentioned.
I am not sure these screws would have anything to do with the whole movement of the zoom component of the lens I think they are just for tightening the outer section of the lens. However it certainly is worth checking before taking into a repair shop. If you do find the screws are already tight then it is going to mean it is something more serious.
@@Touchtechnologyreview Thank you for the quick response here. Appreciate it very much :-)
Hello there. I have a problem too to my 35mm 1.4 L when thr lens switch into manual mode it stucks wont turn. Should i do the same procedure? Thank you
Haven't tried it on that lens but if you can easily remove the rubber without damaging it would be worth having a look to see if you can see the screw underneath as shown in this video.
@@Touchtechnologyreview thank you for your advice. God bless. 🙂🙏
@@trixianjanlingad2243 Your'e welcome. Best wishes!
What to do if it's stuck
Be careful and try to gently pry off it off. If it is completely stuck don't force it too much as you could break it and then I would suggest taking it in to a camera repair shop.
Great ! I fix it haha
Right on
How much does it cost to fix this in store?
It will vary depending on where you take it for service and which country. Here in Australia service costs are usually around $150 plus for a basic repair with no parts needed.
@@Touchtechnologyreview 150!,wtf I can get a new lens here in India at that price
@@supersarfarazadoni4440 Really. Wow we get ripped off here. Everything is expensive here in Australia.
@@Touchtechnologyreview yup I bought the canon 200d last year, cost meet 48k in rupees that's some 950 AUD and now I'm facing this problem
