You've saved a lot of people a lot of money....including me! Canon wanted $240....took me an hour. Thanks a lot, this was a great tutorial. Oxford University! I lived in Summertown, just off the Woodstock Rd....long time ago though!
You know what? Your graciousness in letting us know how simple this procedure can be is what being a human being is all about. You helped me that's for sure. Opened her up and the mounts for the metal plate were cracked off. Super glue and fingers crossed.
Appreciate this video mate, just fixed mine with your help. When I heard bits rattling around I assumed there was likely broken plastic so glad I did some research before ordering a new one. Side note - probably good practise to slip the rubber ring off every once in a while and tighten screws to avoid having to pull the lens apart in the future.
Thank you so much for this. Just fixed my 17-40 using this as guide. If it was not for this video I would sent my lens in for expensive repairs. Again, thank you!
This was a great tutorial. You saved me from sending this in for a couple screws. Canon should offer a fix for this as is sounds common. a little lock-tite. Thank you very much for taking time to share this.
Thanks for the video. My zoom still worked but it had some play when I try to zoom in and out. I was able to just remove the rubber band and both screws were loose, I just tightened it back up and its good as new!
Hey Luke! Thanks very much for this helpful video. I had an accident with my 17-40 and crushed the plastic front sleeve assembly. It was a different problem from the one shown in this clip, but your detailed instructions got me to the point where I could remove and replace the front sleeve and re-assemble the lens with minimal hassle. Much appreciated!!!
Great video, thanks so much. You saved me a rental fee for another lens to use and whatever it would have cost to have Canon make the repair on mine... and it took me less time than it would have taken just to prepare and package it to send in for repair!
Brilliant mate - thank you. Exactly my problem. Only thing to note is that the screws holding the brass "washers" appear to be magnetic and were stuck to the wall of the lens barrel much deeper inside the lens. Finding the loose brass 'washer' was fine but it took a few moments to locate the missing screws
*OR... you can just take that plastic band off first thing, and shake it, and the screws will fall back out the holes. You may not have to disassemble the lens at all. *thank you for posting this video, I would not have guessed this was the problem at all. But I was able to solve it in about 3 minutes. The screws and one of the housing pieces came out the holes from whence they came. And the other housing piece dropped out the back of the lens after a bit of shaking. And then it was easy to see where they went back in. works perfectly.
My only issue was besides the screws that were off on mine, those other two pieces were off as well and you never mentioned where they go back in the housing. Any suggestion or example appreciated. Thanks for this video.e
Hi Luke, Thanks for your video. My problem with the lens which i own is that the focus ring is not working not the zoom. Should i try to take it apart further and look for problems? I'll wait to hear back from you. Adorama was quoting me like 800 to even look at it.
For a simple check of the presence of the screws you dont need to screw anything. Just remove the first rubber zoomring by pinching it a bit so you can remove it over the end of the lenscap. If the two screws are there maybe check if ok. You can even wash the rubber ring and clean it with a handsoap and water. After drying replace ghe rubber ring and its done!
Thank you very much for tutorial. I had absolutely the same problem I was not able proceed with initial opening, i.e. black inner plastic removal using little spoon trick - till I found this video. BTW I think U-shape dude is filter holder.
Thanks for the tutorial! Zoom working again. Only issue is that my lens is no longer ultrasonic!!! It makes noise in autofocus mode...I guess I have to do it all over again he? Any ideas what it could be?
Hi - thanks a lot for that tutorial! I'm in Comoros, so can't send it anywhere anyway - so had to look for a Thing like you did. Nice done also - ist just perfect for watching and doing it! not to much showed and also not to quick to miss some important steps! now it works again, and I can use it or borrow to my african Friend.
Hi Luke, I have a canon 70-200mm lens that I dropped a couple feet the front lens is pushed back and the auto focus is affected. The front metal ring is not bent. Do you think it's fairly easy to fix?
Many thanks for this informative video. Yesterday my 17-40 would only zoom from 28-40 and I can hear stuff rattling around in it. Gonna try doing what you did and hope I can save myself a costly trip to the Canon repair centre.
Thanks for posting this. Had the same issue. Your video solved my problem and saved my the ridiculous service cost from Canon. btw, what kind of screw driver do you use? Mind sharing a link? Thanks.
+Qinglin Meng Thanks! I used a friends screwdriver but you may be able to find one at Canadian tire: www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mastercraft-30-in-1-silent-ratcheting-precision-bit-driver-0573502p.html#.ViU-5MuUvjQ
Thanks!!! It was helpful to me!!! One quick question: If a set the focus and then I change the zoom the focus change. Is that normal? If it is normal what kind of lens do I need? Thanks!!
Thanks for the video, I had the same problem... but I think I lost one of the screws. Any idea if there are any parts dealers that sell the screws themselves?
I wish to Thank you for your video I just repair my 17-40 It's felt on the floor with my camera and I broke it in two part. The ring remained attacked to the camera e the rest (the 90% of 17-40). I used some glue (Loctite) to weld togheter the two pieces and some tapes. I soldering the broke cable and put everything together using your video. Thank again thank you very much
Hey, I have similar problem. I have old 17-35 f2.8L, it is all working well, but at one moment there was something in the lens, i stumbled it and a small screw fall out from rear. Everything is working fine, but i have some extra parts. Will this method work for me?
Good video, but I had a blocked zoom (fallen screw) that needed the last part where he gives his "proceed with care" warning. This part was too sketchy, just saying take off these bits and slide out the housing after taking out 4 screws. It's possible but it would have been better if he said to be careful about putting the focus moving bar back in its housing on resassembly. You can reassemble it without doing this and of course the focus doesn't work. Basically a good video.
I have removed to two pieces rattling around, but there is no screws to hold these two pieces to the zoom mechanism. Are there supposed to be two screws that go thru the little gold pieces that were rattling around?
Hey Joshua, I am currently in the same situation - I took it apart just as the video so awesomely guided - but I am only finding the gold pieces rattling around inside that the screws go into - no screws. What did you do? I am sitting here with my lens apart ! Thanks, Joe
That's exactly what was wrong with my lens! I thought I'd dropped my pelican case and broken something inside. Thanks for the tutorial! Unfortunately, I broke one of the ribbon cables, so I have to get one off of eBay and take my lens apart all over again!
My focus ring is the one thats slipping. Im not sure if its meant to be like it is or not. Does your focus ring continue to revolve no matter how far you turn it? In other words, can you keep turning it forever, or does it reach an end point? Mine continues to turn forever. It seems like its broken. When I take the rubber off, there are a few holes. Doesn't look lie there were screws there though.....
so glad i searched this, I was going to take my lens into get repaired tomorrow for the nice price of £160 😂 i only need to go buy good screwdriver now instead 👍🏻 thankyou
Holly s@&t... I had the same problem with my lens. Now everything is fine. You are my hero mate. One day when you will travel to Poland 1 bottle of whiskey on me! :)

Thanks James! Yeah, exactly, that's a good tip.
Did this repair myself after considering all of the other, very costly options. You and your video just saved me $800. Thank you!
+MACH Photography Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this. Just fixed my 17-40 using this as guide. If it was not for this video I would sent my lens in for expensive repairs. Again, thank you!
Ryddim Magazine I'm glad my video helped!
You're simply an amazing human being for this.

jonsthedrummer02 Yeah I agree. I thought if it happened to me, it likely has happened to other people too!
Thanks for the video. My zoom still worked but it had some play when I try to zoom in and out. I was able to just remove the rubber band and both screws were loose, I just tightened it back up and its good as new!
Your video gave me the courage to tackle this job and see it through to successful fruition.
Thank you very much !

+Wybrich You're welcome!
Thanks to your video I was able to repair my 17-40 that had the same issue as yours. Saved about 250€...and a job too!
Great video, thanks so much. You saved me a rental fee for another lens to use and whatever it would have cost to have Canon make the repair on mine... and it took me less time than it would have taken just to prepare and package it to send in for repair!
Very useful, helpful video. Zoom ring in my lens worked not good, with resistance. Thanks your video I fixed it!
Thanks Mariusz!
Thaaaaaaank you!!!!!! I didn’t want to have to buy a new lens!! You are a God send!

Perfect video tutorial on how to fix broken zoom ring on 17-40. Saved me a lot of time and money :) THX Very much :)
Thought my lens was broken as bits rattling about inside so looked for video to take it apart and found this! Was exactly the problem.. thanks
That's it, hope your lens keeps working well for a long time!

Great Video. Very helpful. Do you have any idea why my 17-40 only zooms out to 19 instead of the 17?
Thank you, I really appreciate your input.
This tutorial aged well ;) thanks so much, just fixed my lens!
Thanks, Alejandro, glad it helped!
Thank you very much for tutorial. I had absolutely the same problem I was not able proceed with initial opening, i.e. black inner plastic removal using little spoon trick - till I found this video. BTW I think U-shape dude is filter holder.
+Pudu Pudu Yeah I know it's a filter holder now, thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial! Zoom working again. Only issue is that my lens is no longer ultrasonic!!! It makes noise in autofocus mode...I guess I have to do it all over again he? Any ideas what it could be?
I don't know what that would be as that problem didn't occur to me, sorry! Hope you can fix it!
Media2play did you find a solution to this??
Same here
If you lose Auto Focus after the repair, make sure the two WHITE pressure tabs are still connected to the ribbons, and on the proper side.
Dude thank you so much for making this video. I thought I was screwed for sure.
The first piece you took off (the U shape plate) is the back filter holder. ie. the gelatin filter holder.
Hi - thanks a lot for that tutorial!
I'm in Comoros, so can't send it anywhere anyway - so had to look for a Thing like you did. Nice done also - ist just perfect for watching and doing it! not to much showed and also not to quick to miss some important steps!

Wow, I had to look up Comoros, to be honest! Glad it helped!
Thank you.Worked like a glove.
+Florin D No problem! Like a glove!
thank you so muchj my dude you saved my life
No problem, thanks man!
Hi Luke, I have a canon 70-200mm lens that I dropped a couple feet the front lens is pushed back and the auto focus is affected. The front metal ring is not bent. Do you think it's fairly easy to fix?
I can't really say David, I've never owned that lens, sorry!
Many thanks for this informative video. Yesterday my 17-40 would only zoom from 28-40 and I can hear stuff rattling around in it. Gonna try doing what you did and hope I can save myself a costly trip to the Canon repair centre.
+tom waugh I hope it works! Thanks!
+lifeofluke Actually it now zooms Ok but won't autofocus!
I think that another disassembly may be in order!
Ah, tough. It could be the electrical connectors. Sorry to hear that!
No problem. I'll get it sorted. Your video was very informative.
where did you put the little nuts that were floating around back in? I didn't see you do anything with them...
+lifeofluke
Thanks. I went to CanadianTire and got it. Quality is actually very good. Thanks again for the info.
+Qinglin Meng Great!
Luke do you know how to fix a de-centered canon zoom lens? Specifically 70-200 f4?
thanks mate! saved my fave outdoor adventure lens
+mikel magdadaro Thanks Mikel!
Gracias. He podido arreglar mi 17-40..... Ya estaba temblando pensando que tendría que enviarlo a Canon.
Gracias, Enrique!
Thanks!!! It was helpful to me!!! One quick question: If a set the focus and then I change the zoom the focus change. Is that normal? If it is normal what kind of lens do I need? Thanks!!
+Paolo Roberto Pianezza Hmm, you're saying that the focus changes when you zoom? I don't know... sorry!
Can you check this thing on your lens? thanks buddy
+lifeofluke Yes! That is what happens. Can you check if your lens does the same think? I'll be very helpful. Thank you very much!!
+Paolo Roberto Pianezza Yes, I have the same problem when I zoom, the focus changes, and I don't know why!
The focus ring on my 24-105 is 'gritty' is there an easy way to clean just this part?
Thanks for the video, I had the same problem... but I think I lost one of the screws. Any idea if there are any parts dealers that sell the screws themselves?
+Scott Medway Thanks Scott! I don't know where you can find new screws, sorry!
+lifeofluke Thanks! I found a site that sells the screws, I was wondering what screwdriver size you used to disassemble the lens?
+Scott Medway It was a screwdriver for electronics, don't know the exact size, but I found it at canadian tire

Yes, two little screws that connect with small sivler metal blocks on the other side.

Good tip!
Thank you for this!! Just fixed mine right now 🔥
Great video - BUT - I am only finding the gold pieces that the screws go into - not the actual screws as well. Help !
where can i buy the inner plastic ring for my canon 17-85mm lens (1:05), please help. thank you!
+kam ho Thai I'm not sure but you could try calling Canon and asking
That's exactly what was wrong with my lens! I thought I'd dropped my pelican case and broken something inside. Thanks for the tutorial! Unfortunately, I broke one of the ribbon cables, so I have to get one off of eBay and take my lens apart all over again!
Glad the video helped, Jayson!
heyyy Luke can it be done similarly for 18-55mm canon??? plz help I am in a mess with it
Hi Harjit, because I haven't repaired a 18-55mm before, I'm not sure, sorry!
that's ok I have done it... thank you...it was a great help.. great work
The 'U-shaped' frame is a gelatin filter holder. Note the white, right angled, size markers for correct filter sizing.
do you have a video of on how to remove Front element of 17-40
no I don't, sorry
would it be worth just removing the rubber ring first and seeing if you can simply tighten the screws beefore you go ahead and dismantle the lens
Yes I would say go ahead and try that - only if the screws have fallen inside do you then need to dismantle the lens
Great vid. Thanks! I'm going to try this when I get home!

Damn this really useful! I watched it but i'm still nervous of getting deeper of my lenses. Anyway, you just save my money. Tq!
so glad i searched this, I was going to take my lens into get repaired tomorrow for the nice price of £160 😂 i only need to go buy good screwdriver now instead 👍🏻 thankyou
you brave man!!!! I would have the gust to do that.... I would forget how to come back :D :D Great video!!!
That little "U shaped dude" is the rear filter holder, FYI.
Happened to me, too. Has Canon ever admitted this serious flaw?
muito + muito obrigado mesmo pela ajuda . Ja estava desesperado Que Deus lhe pague.
De nada!
thank you!!!! you fixed my life!!! :D

Nice, thank you!!!
Thanks AJ!

I had the same issue with my lens. Thanks for posting this video and I was able to fix mine. Thank you :)
Thanks!
Holly s@&t... I had the same problem with my lens. Now everything is fine. You are my hero mate. One day when you will travel to Poland 1 bottle of whiskey on me! :)
Just did this and now my AF doesn't work. Everything seems ok. Any ideas?
+lajoodesign The first thing that I think of is are the electrical points connected right?
That would affect the AF motor.
+lifeofluke Yes they are. It's really hard to not get them right.
+lajoodesign hmm. I'm not sure what to say.
If you lose Auto Focus after the repair, make sure the two WHITE pressure tabs are still connected to the ribbons, and on the proper side.
Very Good! tks!
Thank you!
Thank you
I accidentally snapped one of the ribbon cables. I assumed they werent glued and i just had to pull the zoom "barrel" off
:(
You should note that initially the cables are glued down
I'm sorry to hear that, I should have advised to be as gentle as possible with the zoom ring and ribbon cables
Awsome
Big Russian thanx, dude!
@3:04 better take a plastic knife IMHO.
Thank you :-).
U-shaped dude is to put gelatin filters.
+lenhister Ah ok, got it.
