    I completely agree about DC needing to diversify. I remember the Justice League TV series where Batman was brooding, Wonder Woman was like Thor in her misunderstanding of our world, and Superman was Mr. Positivity. When Superman died and Batman visited the grave "you taught me justice didn't always need to come from the shadows" what a powerful moment that DC will never get if they make all their characters act the same and unfortunately they now have to reverse Superman's character to fit that scenario after MoS.
    You can do it DC just embrace the diversity in personalities!

      Big Boss, since you remembered the JLU series, do you remember how Clark was _before_ he became Superman and just found out who he was and then as full on Clark Kent, reporter in the big city? Now think about the mid point of MOS and the veeeeeeery end scene. _That's_ how I see it, and yes, I could be very wrong, but it's still just wait and see.

      They have gone and said shazam is going to be a more light hearted film. So I would guess not all the doc movies are going to be the dark and gritty it just looks like it is right now. I'm pretty sure as we get closer to these films releases we find out the all have their own tone.

    I agree with Patton Oswalt. Everything in DC Cinematic Universe so far, seems too dark and brooding. And this is a fear that I have with Batman V Superman. These two guys are supposed to be opposites of each other, even down to their gene (literally). Batman has no powers, Superman virtually has all the powers. Batman operates from the shadows, Superman operates out in the daylight. Batman is brooding and dark, Superman is upbeat and happy. Having these two personalities is suppose to be a conflict. If you just have dark and brooding vs dark and brooding it'll get boring.
    Okay, the Christopher Nolan series of Dark Knight movies made Batman dark and brooding and it was very successful. Doesn't mean that you make all the superheroes dark and brooding.

    • @iHuzza
      @iHuzza 9 років тому +15

      Superman isn't really happy, he's optimistic, bold and pretty solemn but he's not like really cheery all the time. Look at MoS. Under the gritty atmosphere and surroundings, Superman is still very much like Clark Kent, he's still "ever the boy scout" as Batman put it once.

    • @spentlizard353
      @spentlizard353 9 років тому

      They're so much alike that MOS decided at the last minute to have Superman kill Zod just so there'd be a slight difference between the two. (*sigh*)

    • @salamipuddin4206
      @salamipuddin4206 9 років тому +1

      iHuzza That's the word I was looking for. Optimistic. I just wanted Man of Steel to be a bit more light-hearted I guess. As for the Aqua-Man outfit (I know you didn't mention it), but I quite like it. It kind of modernizes it a bit. Because the classic Aqua-Man outfit probably wouldn't fit on live action.

      I think that's what went wrong with Man of Steel. Instead of making a Superman movie they made a... I don't even know what. I just know it wasn't Superman. I feel DC sticking to Nolan's more dark tone of the Dark Knight is a crutch.

  • @MariaVosa
    @MariaVosa 9 років тому +111

    Omg Hollywood jus HIRE THIS MAN to develop everything!! Thank you Patton - let's put a kibbosh on the Kubrick stare for superheroes. And no more damn brooding from Superman!
    Also - the idea of a series charting the early days of superheroes with the original Sandman, Miss Fury etc would be fantastic! But rather TV series than movies. Make it happen!

    WB just seems too afraid to branch out from the proven Batman formula

    • @Robinplender
      @Robinplender 9 років тому +12

    • @hardy83
      @hardy83 9 років тому +1

      It also doesn't help that Snyder has always had the "visually gritty but shallow" style for his movies.
      Probably why MoS is split. He's a very much a like/dislike kind of director.
      If people want visually stunning, he's great, but if people want good storytelling, he's not so great.
      To each their own, and yes, because of MoS it will be sad to see characters like Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman be "gritter" than they need to be.

    • @carsonsab2604
      @carsonsab2604 9 років тому

    I have to agree with him on the brooding thing. It's fine to be gritty if it fits with the character. Batman, of course he should be like that. It's Batman! But not everyone has to be of the same type. A group works because everyone has a different personality and background. Of course who knows maybe it will all work out nicely for DC. They just have to keep the right characters matched with their respective tones.

    Patton Oswalt is truly awesome, from his talents as a comedian to being a comicbook/superhero geek as well as his star turn on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. And he's spot on regarding the use of "brooding" in depicting superheroes in film (particularly DC comics based films); not every superhero is meant to be a dark, brooding character with the proverbial [Stanley] Kubrick type stare! LOL! Some originality please! Looking forward to seeing Patton in more superhero fanfare, including more Agents of SHIELD! Awesome question & answer segment with Patton! Encore!

    "Spider-Man 2" isn't my choice but it's definitely a good choice that I immensely respect. It's story of a man who loses everything and goes off the rails is so tragic and well-told. People love "The Dark Knight" for The Joker but Dr. Octupus brought that level of gravitas to a villain four years prior. There have been so many superhero movies that have come out over the past fifteen years yet somehow "Spider-Man 2" is one of the FEW movies to portray a truly memerorable villain.

      He's not that great a Peter. Imo neither version was accurate though. Garfield kept stuttering like a crack head, while Toby kept crying. constantly. So I'm glad they are going with a new actor. just my opinion though, to each their own.

    Very happy to hear that Patton is a Matrix Trilogy fan. Everybody is a hater when it comes to the Matrix Trilogy because they can't form their own opinions and like to jump on the anti-Matrix bandwagon.

    • @curtisharris9018
      @curtisharris9018 9 років тому +2

      There's a reason why that bandwagon exists. The Matrix was amazing, Reloaded was meh, and Revolutions was god awful friendo

    • @jacobelis79
      @jacobelis79 9 років тому +1

      Curtis Harris I will give you Revolutions as being the worst film but as a whole the Trilogy was fresh. Hollywood could use originality on the levels of the Matrix again. But too bad they're only concerned with superhero movies.

    • @curtisharris9018

      Curtis Harris Just out of curiosity, why do you personally not like the Matrix sequels? I'm trying to see if I'm too biased in favor of them lol

    • @curtisharris9018
      @curtisharris9018 9 років тому +2

      I personally don't like the sequels because they were unable to deliver on what made The Matrix so great. When I was a kid, I watched all three movies. I was too young to understand the philosophical nuances of each movie, so I mainly watched them for the action set pieces. However, while I can re-watch The Matrix now that I'm older and appreciate it for its themes and messages in addition to the action, the only things I can still appreciate from the sequels are their action set pieces. The sequels are just sort of a mess story-wise. At this point, I can still watch The Matrix and Reloaded (I love the highway chase scene) but I don't even bother with Revolutions. That being said its cool if you love the movies, there are much worse trilogies lmao

    what Patton says is wrong, when comics first started with every hero, they were bright, colorful and chummy. But times change and characters adapt to the times their written in. So what am I mussing ? What is everybody complaining about?

    • @HumanAfterAll123
      @HumanAfterAll123 9 років тому +2

      To add a last statement to my point, people who complain about man of steel need to realize that it was supermans first time being the hero, he's not perfect right out of the gate, and he needed this experience to become the true superman we know from the comics and why he will fight harder so that he'll never have to kill again.

    • @bigbowss9817
      @bigbowss9817 9 років тому

      No matter what era, each characters had a different personality and attitude. Superman from the 30's to now was always a symbol of hope and Batman was always using fear and intimidation gainst its foes. You have to keep each characters individuality and its the clash between those different opinions thats interesting. You can have a dark story with an upbeat character. Its the setup that changes, not the core of the character, and when it happens its terrible (just look at New 52 Superman).

    • @HumanAfterAll123
      @HumanAfterAll123 9 років тому

      See now that's what I'm trying to say, you took the words right out of my mouth. Man of steel was Clarks first run at being superman, so I don't think it's fair to say that he's not the supes we look up to, cause again it's his first run at it, he'll get better at it. And characters like Wonderwoman and Aquaman..... I don't know what to say about them because I became familiar with them in The Justice League cartoons, and while I know that early versions of Aquaman had him as more of a joke character, he's been taken a lot more seriously ever since his reimagining in the 90's. I trust Zac & his team to handle these characters with respect and love, MOS might have been better to a lot of people of they didn't compare it to the Christopher Reeves superman.

    Majority of idiots say MoS was gritty and all that bullshit but fail to mention how MoS wonderfully depicted an alien-turned-superhero dealing with his inner conflict. Some people make fun of Clark for crying at the end but how many superhero movies managed to showcase the consequences of a superhero killing a villain when it is not in his right to do so? Especially when the villain is the last of the superhero's kind and the superhero does not want to kill him.

    • @drdinosaurjones6326
      @drdinosaurjones6326 9 років тому

      Cause he is. He is way to cocky to be Peter Parker, he is the same idiot prick he started being in the first movie, he's on a fucking skateboard that is like the most antithesis thing peter would ever do, he never grew or mature, or learn nothing! He ends up being the same dick we started with! Uncle Ben is dead? Well i better start seeking for vengeance with no end and never learn shit about the whole "with great power comes great responsability" that defines who i am and the reason i became the masked vigilante known as Spider-Man! Who's got time for that?! Also, leaving Aunt May alone so he can go to london to bang Gwen Stacy day and night? Thats not the peter parker i know, the guilt of being the reason she doesn´t have a husband anymore would never let him think of doing that, not even contemplate that option. You probably gonna tell me he's is more faithful to the material, cause he is funny and have webshooters, hes not, he's humor ( on TAS) is complety out of character, and in TAS2 is also out of character and just over the top in a baaaad way. The webshooters are overly design, they look like tamagochis attached to his gloves. Fuck Emma stone as Gwen Stacy as well, i mean Kristen Dunst is awful, but Emma Stone doesnt play Gwen, she play a blonde version of herself. And the weight Webb gives to the romantic scenes is AWFUL, they kill the movies pace. Sally FIeld is the most hideous Aunt May they could find, Electro is a shit, Green Goblin as well, Rhino is just horrible and the lizard looks like a fucking goomba from the Super Mario Bros movie, and if you say that he look like that cause is how Steve DItko concieved the character, that's bullshit, in that case Tobey's Chubby Spider-Man is better just cause Romita Sr. drew him that way, and he is considered the greatest Spidey artist.
      :D

    • @patataton
      @patataton 9 років тому

      Pablo Tejada
      so in one hand you complain he doesn't "mature or learn" and in the other you claim he should never leave aunt may and go to london because the guilt would "never let him think of doing that"
      so you want him to mature and become an adult but you want him to be a man child forever

  • @andrebetita

    Cut DC a break. I think people just want to hate on DC, no matter what they do.
    My earliest memory of the DC vs. Marvel rivalry was Marvel being praised for being so gritty and edgy and "realistic", so much so that even its brightest-colored hero -- Spiderman -- fails to save his girlfriend, fails to save his girlfriend's father, fails to save his uncle, and is almost always neurotic. Meanwhile DC is criticized for being corny and naively optimistic and having too-perfect characters who almost never fail.
    Now people are complaining that DC is too serious and Superman's not perfect enough, and why can't they be more like Marvel's happy fun-time superheroes who crack a joke after they crash a giant alien into a train station, or level a small town in new mexico, or blow a hole through a guy's chest aboard air force one, or fucking kill lots and lots of people in WW2?
    Whatever, man. Just let them do their shit and judge each movie by its own merits, without bringing in tribalism, ad hominems, and instant-cook buzzword criticisms into the review. I loved The Avengers, I also loved Man of Steel. I didn't love Green Lantern and i marginally liked Iron Man 2. I hated Ghost Rider and Batman and Robin. I hated X-men Origins Wolverine but liked The Wolverine.
    You don't have to define yourself in boxes. I love Marvel but I don't want everything to look like Marvel. And in a world where the marvel movies are a bit lacking in that "edginess" their comics are known for, I'm glad DC's filling that in for me.

    • @MekareMadness
      @MekareMadness 9 років тому

      Same here... I love both DC and MARVEL and I'm so happy that I can see my faves in this movies ...I really love the old Supes movies, but for me Man of steel is the best Superman film so far. Not a perfect movie, but a great origin film. Lot of people expect him to be perfect all the time..that is superboring...He has no experience in that movie and yet defeated Zod and his army with some human help. People forgive a lot of things to the Avengers movie (and MCU) and meanwhale hate the MoS? WTF is going on? Zod could beat that chituri army alone etc. Also that film gave me hope, He was a believable character, and He saved Earth, but not saved everybody... I was glad to see that. Kal-el was not just a sketch in MoS. What He did in the end was okay for me also... "I love Marvel but I don't want everything to look like Marvel" ...exactly...I think DC has a harder job, because characters like Batman or Superman has a bigger cinematic or tv history then all the Avengers. And too nostalgic fans are the worst ... I really enjoy the lighthearted MCU movies, but I always want more ...and DC give it to us, If they would be funny like MCU people would say They copying MARVEL so lame duh and I will be angry too because I always expect more from DC...well different things. At least they trying... Best comicbook movies (in my opinion): Watchmen, TDK, Blade, X-men and MoS..so yeah...I don't always want some full of oneliners funthing... I was happy when I read your comment...so I felt I need to reply it...sorry for the mistakes my native language is not english obviously :)

    Whatever is causing that I hope that it doesn't affect his health and I hope that he has enough success to where he feels he can throttle back and take a vacation.
