This is terrific. Many years ago I made some bellows as a proof of concept. It's a terrific project, very useful if you have a use. Yours of course is much better. Good video.
In the 1980s I was able to buy used, a $9000 8x10 Toyo view camera, for $3300 because it had a crushed bellows. Never fixed it, used it for over 20 years. Made a lot of money with it.
The alternative is a bag bellows- which is just a 4 sided bag. To keep it from sagging use some piano wire in the seams.
Nice job!
perfect DIY many artist self hand made wonderful education DIY studying thank you top
Thanks too. I need bellows to protect the bed of my lathe ! Now, thank to you, i can make them.
I was expecting some cheesy DIY bellows. But man, this looks impressive!
Thank you, I do my homework, It's done exactly as the traditional view camera makers do it :-)
Wow - I've been looking for that fabric for ages!! Thanks.
Make sure you keep your 'ribs' thin as it's quite bulky :-)
It can be really difficult in some places finding light proof fabric. For our photo studio in Montreal in 1980, the best we could find for black out curtains was heavy brown duck cotton.
Very impressive, lots of detail, always wondered how it was done
Thanks Jonathan :-) more coming soon
Thank you :-)
I’m impressed! Amazing explanations, and I really like your relaxed pace
Glad you like 🙂
@@ashsphotolounge I can't wait for the part 3 of building your camera :)
@@UltraSteaKME Trying to find some reclaimed mahogany to work up into the body ...
@@ashsphotolounge A nice wood for sure for such a project!😉 I'm particularly look forward to see how you will handle the different mechanisms, knobs, corner pieces, angular profiles, etc. Finger crossed you'll have a good time crafting the beast! 😃
awesome
very cool
Thanks 🙂
I have 2 8x10 cameras needing new bellows. Luckily I have the ribs to use as a pattern to make new ones. Thanks for the video, it gives me hope that I can get this done 😉 cheers from Canada.
Glad to have helped out a little :-) Just be meticulous, measure everything twice , and have faith in yourself.
And cheers back at ya from London :-)
@@ashsphotolounge Well, my 8x10 bellows came together somewhat nicely. Not quite as nice as yours, but this is the first attempt, lessons were learned for the next set. Cheers, and thanks again for the tips!
@@explorer6 Absolute pleasure to be of help :-)
good video, but one tip, MAKE the bellows interchangable, as some time later you may want to fit a wide angle lens ( 90/75/60/58/47mm) and for this PLUS movements you need a bag bellows; also if anything happens being able to fit a spare can allow you to shoot again fairly quickly, and be less expensive, as you don't have to rip off any glue to the camera standard frames.
I am going to use neodymium magnets to hold the bellows in place rather than glue for this very reason - watch this space.
Like!
Great, great job! I am currently also urgently looking for a bellow and can not find one. I wish I could make this myself or know someone who can...beautiful cameras you have there.
Tanks for your comment :-)

Gentleman. Your videos are great. I have an idea, but I don't know how to carry it out. Possibly you can help me.
the idea is: to mount a lens with manual focus and manual diaphragm but from modern 35mm lenses, and adapt it to a large format camera. It sounds ridiculous but what I imagine is that with the glass of modern lenses, you would have a much more contrasted and defined image...I don't know if I'm crazy or what do you think...THANK YOU...I always follow you on youtube.
Mounting the lens is no problem ... the issue is that a lens designed for 35mm will not project a large enough circle to cover medium format, let alone large format. Typically a 35mm lens projects an image circle that's not much larger than the diagonal of a 35mm frame as all it has to cover is the diagonal of the 24x36mm frame - or around 43.3 mm. The image circle of say a 5x4 lens is in excess of 162mm!

great video! Thanks for sharing. One thing about that material... it's quite thick.. how much can you compress it? Would a think plastic have been a choice for the stiffeners?
Hi and thanks for your comment. The material on it's own isn't particularly thick. The lining and stiffeners bulk it up a little, but the stiffeners are the things that will mostly determine the maximum compression. I used card mostly because it's traditional in bellows making, but also because most plastics give of toxic gasses when laser cut (chlorine or cyanide) . The bellows compress down to around three and a half inches minimum, which should be fine in minimum bellows draw with my wide angles using a slightly dished lens board. However, when I make my next set I will use thinner card, as the stock I used was WAY overkill, and a slightly shorter maximum draw length 🙂
Nice job! One thing that may be helpful next time: I think you can get rid of all black lines instantly using the feature "select by color". I am not myself user of Corel Draw, but I am quite sure it has that possibility.
Ah - I wondered how you do that!
@@ashsphotolounge Sorry, I can't give you precise instructions on that because I don't use Corel Draw. But I just Goggled "Corel Draw select by color" and notice that there are several tutorials about this procedure. I mentioned it to you because I remember once I took a .pdf to a laser cut shop and the guy did this operation in seconds. He was able to select all objects with the same solid color and deleted them all at once.
Hi,
as outer fabric link is not working I wanted to confirm. We are talking of DAVIS TIVOLI fabric? 330g/m2 (kinda thick one)? Thanks!

@@ashsphotolounge thanks, terryfabric was down when I wrote the comment. Thanks a lot, happy trails
Can't see a part 2 anywhere, does it exist?
it's in preparation at the moment ... Work pressures meant the workshop had to earn my living rather than build my camera ... there will be part 2 very shortly!
@@ashsphotolounge Excellent news!
So, still in development? Or has it been finished?

hi. nice bellows! can i use this fabric for a DIY cloth shutter? what is the fabric thickness? where did you buy this from? thanks!
This is the fabric ... ua-cam.com/users/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbE9rcGgxQmdOeG5HOFQyMHFYemFlS1V0bU1XUXxBQ3Jtc0tsLVRjS0ZYblZhcVFxWGs5MDdiYTBJU0NYUUZpSTE0YjlhaWZBOVRZTDdWOXVOM2N0XzVsN2g1ODl0X0ZGRWdEeFA0Q3BKS3VHRElfRkJqYmNYNVBNYkRhM2tQOEJlTWhWSGx5UUVIWlZhUlJzOGZRbw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.terrysfabrics.co.uk%2Fproducts%2Ftivoli-heavy-duty-waterproof-fabric-black
Depending on size and design it may be a touch too thick for shutter curtains.
@@ashsphotolounge thanks for the link!
wicked dude.
