  • Is Etsy still worth it in 2022? What are the pros and cons of starting an Etsy shop in 2022? Is it still a good place to sell on or is it just too saturated now?
    I address all these questions and more in this video as SOOOO much as happened over the past year that this topic deserves a revisit.

    Oh my gosh.. I can't believe I forgot to add payment reserves to the cons list! 🤦‍♀ Like I said, Etsy has Etsy'ed hard this past year and it's been hard to keep up. What pros and cons would you add to this list?

      What are payment reserves?

      i laughed out loud with your 24 hour message response rate comparison you made with their customer service... Kinda shocking how invisible their customer support is. Non existent, really.

      You've had a shop for 15 years and they are still reserving your payments, what hope have I got? That was my first disappointment - they said it was because my shop was new. They keep finding bogus reasons to reserve my payments. Like you need to add tracking (i always do as soon as i post). Another issue are their postal labels. Australia Post is my go to for sending my product and Etsy has it on their approved list but they are trying to manipulate me into using their labels. They make adding the tracking number pretty laborious too by manually typing a almost 20 digit number in so as not to get my payment reserved ( yet they still did) I should be able to choose my postal carrier. I've put my shop in vacation mode while i decide what to do. It's heartbreaking to make an $80 sale and have them reserve your payment. There's no point having a shop if they are going to hold onto your money. You can't phone them up. When you finally figure out how to Email contact them, their answer is to send you a link to FAQ. And even then it's not relevant because they haven't even read your email outlining your issues. I suspect their support team are A.I. bots. Pretty demoralised.

    Dear Kim, Thank you for a great presentation, with your charming British accent. You speak clearly, without your head, and hands bouncing all over the place. Love you, Kim! What a fantastic summary of the Etsy selling experience. Ironically, for all my griping, I made star seller for November through January. That will, of course, disappear rapidly, because the Christmas rush is over, so my sales won't be nearly high enough to matter. But, for all the panic, stress and added gray hairs, that tiny badge is sitting there mocking my cynical self. And now, knowing that it doesn't matter for shop visibility, makes it utterly worthless.
    You've done a brilliant job holding our hands and keeping our humor in place, for the last year. You're an absolute gem. Thank you!

    The fees on Etsy are really over the top especially if you do start selling a lot. A friend paid over $50,000 in fees last year 😣
    Granted, she made 6 figures, but if she had her own website a lot more of this would have been profit for her vs profit for Etsy.

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  2 роки тому +13

      That does seem steep but without knowing anything about her business I can't comment on that. I am surprised though that she doesn't have a website yet given that she is now a six figure business because you're are absolutely right. She may well have made a lot more of a profit overall.

    Thanks for informative video. I disagree with one point - often the dropshipped products/pod products are somehkw handmade - patterns on them is designed by artist. I could create digital products like posters, cliparts, or apply my drawings and designs on products like mugs using POD. I think it's a cool solution. I have no shop on Etsy yet but it is what I would likely do.

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  2 роки тому +6

      No no I'm not referring to POD, that's a whole different niche which as you correctly point out, is perfectly fine. Dropshipping is when you sell something on a platform but you have no input into the making/designing process whatsoever. Essentially you're just a 'middleman' who orders the item from elsewhere when you get an order and someone else ships it out. It's a whole different thing.
      But I agree, POD is totally fine providing the designs are the seller's own. 😊👍

    • @ginacox6308
      @ginacox6308 Рік тому

      Oh I'm so glad you said this, I just opened a shop on Etsy with my own designs using POD, I never realized it was a controversial thing 🙈... I also think it's a good business model, saves resources, but can understand how people who make things from scratch may feel a bit unhappy about it.

    Just now saw this four months later, but still enjoyed the neat summary of pros and cons.
    What bothers me most about Star Seller badges is how they calculate percentages to qualify/not qualify. If you have a relatively small number of sales, a missed response or tracking number will penalize you much more heavily than large-volume sellers.
    It's simple mathematics: one missed response out of five messages is 20%, but one out of fifty is only 2%. In both cases the seller did the same exact thing (missed one response), but the smaller seller loses her Star Seller badge and the larger seller doesn't. Not fair at all.
    Instead of percentages, Etsy should go by total numbers: Two missed responses (for example) and you lose your badge, no matter how many messages you get. This would also put the pressure on those 1000-item resellers to either step up their game or stop flooding the market!

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  2 роки тому

      Could not agree more. But my biggest issue with the badge is that it's such a waste of time. It makes no difference to where you rank in search (currently) and from my personal experience doesn't have any effect on buyer behaviour either.
      It just feels like such a waste of time and resources to me.

I'm based in Belgium (and sell only in the EU, bloody Brexit btw)... and I find that people around me still don't know Etsy exists in many cases. I do have my own website too (Heart of Europe Candles), so it's ok but every time I hear that Etsy offers a HUGE pool of potential customers, I feel a bit disappointed about Belgian (EU) traffic. • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Neel? Unfortunately it's not a simple answer as there are so many moving parts to the Etsy machine and feedback is just one of them. You also need a product that is in demand, good seo, photos, feedback of course, the right price, shipping fees etc. All these moving parts work together to boost conversion rates. I've done a video on this exact topic if you'd like more info.

    I definitely know about con #5. My brand new shop was suspended and I didn’t even get an email why. I sent them an email and got an automated response saying it may take them up to 7 days to do an in depth review. I literally have only. 7 listings so that should take them 2 seconds to review. But we’ll see. I also had listings in my drafts I worked on for days. Sigh. I heard of this happening but didn’t think it would happen to me, and so soon with no reason why. I didn’t break any terms. Hi Kim. Thanks for the video. I now have 9 items up in my shop and yes, they are all print on demand items. I do watercolour sacred geometry paintings and generally only sell the originals in person. This allows me to sell (in theory) my images on products. In my listings, I’ve changed all of my products to « handmade made with the assistance of a production partner » instead of « I did »
    I think being clear about the fact that yes, I painted the images or designed the T-shirt myself, but no someone else made the product for me, is an honest way of presenting my products.
    And yes, I used to make a lot of things by hand too. Jewelry, food items, paintings, clothing. But now, with little capital, it’s hard to justify spending so much money on supplies when the market is flooded. It’s kind of a double edged sword.
    So. I’m trying. One day I hope I will make my first sale and being new and in my mid 50’s, learning all that goes with social media and promotion is way harder to deal with. Thanks Kim.

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  2 роки тому +4

      You see I do feel this happily falls in the handmade category as you designed (and painted) the images yourself. That takes up plenty of time so I'm glad that Etsy allow for the inclusion of third parties to allow for this.

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  2 роки тому

      Oh really?? I wonder if they're purposefully reigning in the reminders to buyers to leave feedback. I bought an item last September and the reminders were borderline harassment! It was pretty aggressive and some sellers have even reported getting negative feedback just because the buyer got sick of being reminded by Etsy. It could be that they've gone from one extreme to another.

    • @jeaneliza23
      @jeaneliza23 2 роки тому

      @@KimBliss The email was just titled ' Jean, have a minute? Let ********* know what you think'. The content was only 'Leaving a review helps Maria with their shop, and also others shopping on Etsy!'. I didn't find it or previous prompts from other purchases offensive. No harassment but then I do leave a review normally. When I haven't, I don't recall any followups from Etsy. As a seller myself, I really appreciate a review as I am fairly new ~ JeanElizaArt. My best sales (3 paintings) however have been to guest buyers so I have not been able to benefit from a review although I know my purchasers were more than happy. It does seem that Etsy are inconsistent then in their promptings?

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  2 роки тому +1

      Now that's not pushy at all. I wish they had been more like that with me, it would've been a much more pleasant experience. My interactions were every time I logged into my shop on desktop, then I'd keep getting these pop ups prompting me to leave feedback. And this went on for the duration of the time you can leave feedback for a buyer which is over 3 months. It's a shame really, had I had a pleasant experience with this buyer then I definitely would've left feedback straight away. But Etsy are always tinkering so maybe they've found a happy medium now. 😊

    I had a listing deactivated for no apparent reason. So, I reached out to Etsy, and they eventually answered... with a generic list of what might get a listing taken down. I went through the whole list and couldn't pin it down. After a lot of time and effort, I finally determined that their algorithm took it down thinking it was in that banned upcycled category. Except that the listing was for a crochet pattern that I wrote. They refused to tell me what in the listing triggered the algorithm. So, I still have an Etsy shop, but I don't promote it anymore. It's *much* cheaper to sell crochet patterns on Ravelry.

    There's a bit of situational hypocrisy in the United States when you have an economic system based on Capitalism, and a digital market treats it's customer (sellers) with such indifference. The basic concept is to 'win your customer' with superior products or services. I'm forced to ask "How is Etsy winning my business as a seller? I mean their position is to win my products on their forum so sales gain them profits. If sellers are dissatisfied, one half of the equation is fundamentally missing. That $10K advertising rule is pure parasitic behavior and completely unethical. Thanks for the content Kim.

    I started my Etsy shop Oct 2020. I run it part time. I love it. It’s been a steep learning curve. I watched so many videos about SEO and use/pay for the data services to help with my tags.
    Considering I didn’t run ads or drive my own traffic for over a year, Etsy’s done me a solid. I managed to get a bestseller badge on one of my listings as well. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I started running ads recently on my already high converting listings and have seen an increase in sales.
    I think the fees are justified considering I don’t drive my own traffic or do social media (I don’t have time! 😞). I find them very worth it even though I’ve seen a huge chunks of people in my category and do similar things I am since I started.

I agree with all your pros and cons. The fees went up this year, so that was annoying, because it hadn't been that long since they raised them. Can you all give me your honest opinion as to whether selling digital t-shirt mockups will sell on Etsy, Creative Market, etc as opposed to selling t-shirts with designs on them. I am torn between the two. Although I will make more money for one t shirt than I will for one digital t-shirt mockup download, I would love to do the mockups.
    I can hardly find any videos on selling digital t-shirt mockups, but plenty on selling digital printables, which is not what I would be doing.
    There are a lot of people selling t-shirts with sayings on them, and I know for a fact that most of them are using digital mockups, but I don't know how to find customers.

    • @KimBliss
      @KimBliss  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure I'd be the right person to do a video on this topic I'm afraid Barbra as it's not a niche that I have experience in.
      That being said I would say that if I were in your shoes I'd be curious enough to dig into the mockups a bit more. So many people are selling POD t-shirts already so I'd imagine that the mockups would be a less saturated niche with a fair amount of demand?
      You'd need to look more into that but seeing as it's a low investment idea why not just do some research and try it if there's enough of a demand? Worst case scenario, you don't sell them and then you'll know for sure.
      A big part of selling on Etsy is experimenting and seeing what sticks. 😊
