- John Wayne is on the run for a murder he didn’t commit in TEXAS CYCLONE a fast-paced western from 1932. Young Wayne, sidekick to B western superstar Tim McCoy, handles himself well and looks great. Duke was working his way up and out of the financial disaster that was THE BIG TRAIL (1930) and would soon be starring in three serials at Mascot Pictures and his own series of classic B westerns for Lone Star.
In TEXAS CYCLONE, Tim comes into town and is mistaken for a model citizen who died years before. Even “Jim’s” widow thinks he’s returned from the dead. Tim befriends wrangler Wayne and later comes to his aide when on trial for murder. Co-starring Walter Brennan as the “old” Sheriff, making his first of eight appearances with Duke, and Shelia Terry. There’s also Wheeler Oakman, up to no good, as usual. You may recognize 3 Stooges’ regular Vernon Dent as the bartender.
Along with Tom Mix, Buck Jones, and Ken Maynard, Tim McCoy was one of the biggest western stars of the late 1920s and early 30s. Before becoming a film star, Tim McCoy had toured with a Wild West Show and became an expert in the ways of sign language and Indian tribes in Wyoming. In 1922, he was asked to provide Native American performers to appear in the Western epic, THE COVERED WAGON. That experience led Tim to Hollywood and stardom.
McCoy’s good looks, horsemanship and personality caused MGM to sign him to a film contract to star in serials and westerns. When sound movies arrived, Col Tim McCoy had a voice and manner well suited to talkies. And, yes, he was a real Col from his service in WWI. He and Wayne made one more film together before Duke starred in his own films for the rest of the decade.

THIS movie turned me on to TIM McCOY! After I saw this I bought every cowboy DVD with him as a COWBOY that I could find. Already a big DUKE fan, a friend turned me on to the cowboy flicks of the 30's and it started with TOM TYLER. This film is so much fun & watching Tim with the Duke made me want to see more. Thanks, Rob for showing it! Hank Patterson & Walter Brennan were two LONG TIME actors that played old men when they were young right up to the days when they were old and always amazed me.

Rob, going back thru your films. Tim McCoy was a superb actor. I’ve loved finding his films to watch. Tho John Wayne the “recognized actor” here, Tim was around long before the Duke hit the screen. Thanks for noting the tremendous amount of extras Tim brought into the westerns. Will you do a series of Tim’s films for us? 🤠
I’ll try and find some of his better films and good prints. I like him too!
