Too bad this concert wasn't videoed. I"ve sat thru many of their concerts herein Philly and I've seen grown men sit there and cry without hiding the tears. She was an annointed singer with a special gift. Not a great voice but filled with the spirit. When she would sit down in a chair in the middle of their performance, we knew it was going to be "Benediction"

31 years ago when the doctors came out of the operating room to tell me that my 5 month old son did not survive the surgery, the only thing that kept me sane was the chorus "I'm holding on and I won't let go God's hand." I know that worship music that is theologically accurate sustains when we can't remember the sermon or even the Scripture reference. Thank you for posting this music. God bless, strengthen and sustain Gospel singers. They are the theologians of the people..

Love Dorothy's beautiful gravely voice. What a gift to this wobbly planet.

I, too, met the Harmonettes when I was young. I was two years old when the Harmonettes began singing in 1940. I was fortunate to live in the same neighborhood with them. I grew up on Harmonettes music. Willie J. Rivers, President, The Original Gospel Harmonettes Historical Society, Inc.

The voice was cracked and broken but she never lost her annointing and the power to move the audience.

When I first heard of Dorthy Love Coats, I just fell in love with her voice; because, she really captures the crowd and takes them to a higher level on the ministry of music and feel the presences of God.

I nevre heard no one like Dorothy Love Coats. I remember when she came to Tampa, Florida many years ago for Goldie Thompson who was a Gospel Promotor and D J. Dorothy Love would be the last on the program folks would be leaving and when she start singing people would come back in the auditorium and shout for hours. I love Dorothy Love. I have not heard any one who had a growl like she had. She said hard and long and would wear us out!

You don't know how your testimony has touched my spirit. I've been in broadcasting since the 60's and though some people have made unpleasant comments about our singers and saying their songs aren't always theologically correct. i've had to tell them that some songs come from scriptures and some from life's experience.there are those who may not attend church but the music ministers to them and speaks to their soul. God Bless you for holding on to your faith and God's hands.

I have LOVED Dorothy Love Coates since I heard her singing (with the original Gospel Harmonettes) on an LP titled, "Ain't that Good News". Her voice is truly an expression of who she is. Great strength of character and very passionate. No pretense. Direct from another Dimension. I am still stunned after all these years and wish more people knew about her and her amazing gifts.

I have a recording of Ms. Love in concert live in Atlanta, Georgia at Wheat Street Baptist Church under the auspices of Rev. Borders. She drove up from Birmingham with her "new" group and the group sat in the front in their all white robes watching the opening groups. And when it was her turn to sing, they got up and "wow", I don't think anyone was as powerful and moving in person as Ms. Love was, and she gave a long testimony, too. She ran all over the church and it seemed like she was flying! Really amazing. So I like her live recordings. Her studio recordings, of course, are good, but they are NO comparison to her live performances. So, I thought this was that concert, but it's another.

The late great Miss Dorothy Love Coates, was one of the few female singers of her era, that brought you to your feet, with praise and worship. I remember when she came to Tampa, Florida and performed at Curtis Hixon Hall. She was called the Sunday school teacher, because of her way of ministering.

Its good to know that you feel as I do about Dorothy. She gave me her phone number I did get to speak with her just one time. As I grew up singing in the choir, I sang her songs, every program we performed on . Somehow I just wanted to sing like her, and be like her. It's very personal for me.

Bro. Heath, we will stay in touch and continue to spread the word about the giants from gospel's "Golden Era". The Philly area made its contribution too. I regret that I cannot get WNAP in my city. Blessings for the great work that I feel sure that you are doing. Willie J. Rivers

Without a doubt ... U can plainly notice that Dot's voice had darkened some by the time of this recording ... all of the hard squalling had taken a toll plus she was older and that occurs naturally with all mankind ... BUT i still think that the woman sounds wonderful !! .. She posesses something that allows you 2 see past the vocal issues... and that something is is the ANNOINTING !! .. the woman is powerful !! .. I LOVE ME SOME DOROTHY LOVE COATES !!

gospellin Thanks for the follow-up. You mention in some of your below posts that you saw some of Dot's performances. I am sure all of us on this thread would love to hear some of your memories for her live; you are our connection to her. I am working on a masters thesis about how Dot helped transform gospel music in the service of the movement in the 50s and early 60s. I would dearly love to hear any thoughts you had about the physicality of her love performances and any of her civil rights work. I see so many references to both but no documentation. Can you please help fill in the gaps? Thanks so much. Happy holidays!

gospellin The last 'hit' was eight months ago so hopefully somebody is monitoring that will have an answer for me. The Harmonetts did an album around '68 that had a song "Heaven" that was different than the one listed on all the other albums. The song began: "If You live right! Heaven. Got to moan right. Heaven. Treat everybody right.Heaven. Sisters and Brothers. Heaven. I'm singing, Heaven, belongs, Heaven belongs to You. Heaven, Heaven, got to go to Heaven.......etc" Also another song is "Hand writing on the Wall" that began "The guest stood in fear and said look king. The guest said look king. Oh, look king....etc". I was told her daughter may have denied anyone the rights to play this particular album. Hopefully this is not so and we can somehow get copies of recordings from that period around '68. My Mom had us in a Group named "The Heavenly Gospel Singers". We started in Bessemer, Alabama and relocated to Chicago in Dec. '66 but Mama kept us singing. I'm bilbo2shire@yahoo.com and I'm also on facebook under Willie Means. I'm 60 now and I first heard "Heaven" in 1968 and the song has remained with me through the years but it seems not too many people in the music field know anything about this album. Thanks. GOD BLESS!!!
