WOW! Well done! I'm not a guitarist, but I'm a HUGE Reich fan, and love this particular piece. Excellent performance. You clearly understand the complexity and spirit of this piece. Nice effects on the guitar too!
Hi, great performance. Thanks for sharing. I'm working on guitar looping and i would like to know what kind of equipment lets you change the pitch of the recorded pattern (as you start using the distortion) whenever you want. Thanks
+@Caitlyn R - its neither in G or E minor, steve reich is a minimalist composer, hes in neither G maj or E minor, he uses notes that are in g that cant be in E minor scale. therefore there is no set scale. Theres also 2 different time signatures, 3/2 & 12/8.
This is superb. You should give yourself massive pat on the back. Guitar didn't need the phaser on the strummed parts though. Still, really well done hats off to you sir.
@winstonthecat actually, on second thoughts, and listening to classical versions, there's a lot more going here, so no, not really Mike Oldfield. What would be interesting would be to hear his electric version of this, given his distinct guitar playing style. As he can't read music, may be difficult.
@lancejackchaza the score can be purchased for around $45 I think. dude obviously nailed the performance, but i'n not really a fan of the different effects or of adding vibrato. i don't think it's stylistically appropriate to this genre in general, or to reich's music specifically.
there are seven guitar parts but only one is played live, there is also two bass guitars that are meant to be panned over two speakers, its such an amazing peice of music i did it for gcse music nearly two years ago and still love it
As with all of Reich's "solo" pieces, there is a pre-recorded backing track that contains all but the lead, solo part. This makes for a performance that's a bit like well rehearsed karaoke, but the music is a just bit too complex to be realized the way Reich intended it to be with just looping machines, a laptop, etc.
I simply ADORE it when the bass guitars come in and when the strumming starts and when the key changes! Best set work...definitely
His timing must be immaculate!!
Just heard this on the radio and had to look it up. It gives me goosebumps!

That distortion was KILLER! :)

definitely one of the best performances I have seen. would love to see this person's take on Movement II (Slow)
After hearing this I tried it with distortion and chorus like you did, and man it's so much fun!
loved the effects
Superb!
Amazing.
i like this version better than the album version! congratulations!
Awesome!
There are only 2 different keys in this piece but it switches between them about 12 times
Studied and hopefully will get me an A-B in the exam on tuesday!!
great job - it turns me on when U turn on distortion - makes me happy !
I wish I'd had to study this for my GCSE music - we got lumbered with Rodeo by Aaron Copeland pffft :)
Interesting, dramatic interpretation! :-)

I did my exam last year, it's piss easy! :D
although i am here for gcse this is still a pretty sick composition i would try and learn it for gyutar but it would take forever
Lovely guitar. Anyone know what model it is?

sounds a lot like Mike Oldfield - who wrote what first?
@Phobia017 are u doing this for gcse because i am and i'm not a fan of it but it is very skillful.
is that meant to make you look better than everyone else
@TheMatthewwheeler The key changes ALOT during the piece.
Exams tomorrow! :(
Due to every source saying a different thing, is this in G and Eb maj or E and C minor or E and C Aeolian mode? :S
E Aeolian and C Aeolian modes.
didnt realise there was a live audience till they started clapping l0l
What kind of radio plays this?
Amazing!
where did you get the tabs for this, it sounds awsome
my exam in two days> X_x
is that ollie morrel?
@Con2105 ?!?! You study Reich in your music exams?! I had to study fuckin' Bon Jovi! You lucky bastards.
What is he using? a loop? sounds like theres more to it...
John Tenezaca He records each cell (part) with his foot tapping a pedal which records what he's previously played so he can play over it.
there are seven guitar parts but only one is played live, there is also two bass guitars that are meant to be panned over two speakers, its such an amazing peice of music i did it for gcse music nearly two years ago and still love it
its basically Eb minor minus the 7th
hi george
Anyone from saint Olaves watching this?
how much of this was actually recorded live, and what was pre recorded?

This is amazing! Did you record the backing track yourself? Currently looking for backing tracks to help me practice but not having any luck.
7 guitar parts and the 2 bass parts were pre recorded.
Auralnoirr there are a few on UA-cam now
you made a mistake there is no major or minor in this piece its AEOLIAN ON E AND AELOLIAN ON C
I totally dig your creative interpretation! Also check it my cover of this awesome piece! Cheers!
