Sunrise from the Bottom of the Sea

Part improvised, even though it's largely written, as a performer, one has to kind of get lost in the sonic universe of this piece and navigate it the same way you might an acid trip. Let the score be your guide. Although this is my own interpretation of this work, for an alternate reading, I highly recommend the wonderful version by Italian guitarist, Sergio Sorrentino, on Silta Records: sergi...

Five Refractions of a Prelude by Bach
Переглядів 83914 годин тому
Described by a couple of very important critics as a bunch of "Spanish guitar clichés" where "The refracting went on far too long," and "stuff [that] is just as likely to make me feel like I’m in some restaurant waiting for a drink refill between the appetizer and main course," I spent a considerable amount of time working on this piece originally in 2004. I took a break for a while after the i...
the dark out of the nighttime
Переглядів 6714 годин тому
_the dark out of the nighttime_ (all lower case) was written primarily as an excuse to involve myself as a performer in one of my own chamber works - something I had never done before at the time I wrote the piece. I chose this particular ensemble because I thought it would be interesting to play with the combination of harp and guitar - two instruments which have similar timbral characteristic...
Unraveling (2007) for electric guitar, percussion, and 3 Looping Machines
Переглядів 84Місяць тому
"Unraveling" is kind of my own, abstract response to “minimalism,” a musical style with which I have a strong love/hate relationship. True to minimalist form, the use of looping machines connotes repetition, and indeed, Unraveling is based on a series of slowly unfolding episodes during which loops are built in real time and then repeated ad nauseam. These repetitions generally fade to the back...

Solid composition, impressive motif, fantastic!
A masterclass in guitar writing. Thankyou for sharing this.
I stumbled across this randomly and Rude Awakening is very cool. Perfect title
Such level of absolute awesomeness!!! Thank you my friend!!!
You are more than welcome, Rubenino! Thanks for the comment. We definitely need to catch up sometime soon.
Hello lovely performance and piece of music. But I have question to ask. 1) Is it a music written for guitar ? 2)Is it originally written by JS.Bach and arranged for you? 3)
What is refractions in this context?
Hi! Thanks for listening. The opening Prelude is by J.S. Bach, the remaining movements are pieces I've written for guitar "in response" to Bach's prelude. They use musical ideas, fragments, and various bits and pieces contained in Bach's Prelude as "jumping off points" for my own, original compositions, kind of like a fantastical "theme and variations" piece. There is a program note on my website that explains it a bit more in depth if you are interested: www.stillsoundmusic.com/five-refractions-of-a-prelude-by-bach
@@mahler007 Thanks a lot for your reply ! This will surely help to appreciate the music.
I really enjoyed listening to it! Meanwhile, classical guitar world could greatly benefit from more works for solo CG by a classical guitarist & composer like yourself!
Thanks Arash! Grateful for your ears. I will get back to the classical guitar one of these days when I'm ready; I can feel it starting to percolate...
@@mahler007 My pleasure, that's great!
I like the way it gives both a sense of peace and worries at the same time before the elec guitar solo comes in...
Thanks for checking it out, Arash!
Very atmospheric!
Very interesting work. Such a pièce de résistance!
Thanks so much for listening, Juan!
Great music, loved the concept!
Thanks so much!
WOW. really enjoyed listening to this great & beautiful composition expertly performed!
Thank you!!
Beautifully interpretted! Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful! I loved the Bach Prelude. Thank you for sharing!
Great playing Andrew!
Bravo!
Loved this suite, hope to see more classical guitar vids on your channel!

Incredible!!!
One of the coolest modern compositions I've ever listened to, Bravo!
PS: If I were a hot shot movie director or producer, I would ask you to compose the soundtrack!
Beautiful composition, love the vibe!
🤧🔥🔥
That distortion was KILLER! :)
great, please explain mic tec for stereo image
Divine reverb TAT beautiful
ello where can I get the backingtrack of the play I liked working the piece. If you can send me, I'm eternally grateful. ajcraimundo@gmail.com
how much of this was actually recorded live, and what was pre recorded?
As with all of Reich's "solo" pieces, there is a pre-recorded backing track that contains all but the lead, solo part. This makes for a performance that's a bit like well rehearsed karaoke, but the music is a just bit too complex to be realized the way Reich intended it to be with just looping machines, a laptop, etc.
This is amazing! Did you record the backing track yourself? Currently looking for backing tracks to help me practice but not having any luck.
7 guitar parts and the 2 bass parts were pre recorded.
Auralnoirr there are a few on UA-cam now
Heck of a song. That ending, man. God bless.
Nice, this is really fun to listen to. Good job!
Lovely guitar. Anyone know what model it is?
i think it's a fender strat
Hey, this is Ian, I just found This great piece arr. by Segovia in a pile of papers. I was having some trouble with it so looked it up and found this, thanks, it's real nice. I feel like I've heard it before, but I can't remember where, nor can I find it anywhere.
Brilliant. I see many influences, but later in the song, I hear the Who ringing in the chords. Thanks for gifting us this song.
+Donn Patton Thanks, Donn, and the pleasure is all mine. Interesting you hear The Who. They were never one of my "seminal" influences, but my appreciation for them has definitely grown in recent years.
+Andrew McKenna Lee I hear it mostly @3.05 - 3.35. that small bit has a Tommy era vibe that just struck me, Can't wait for the next Knells album.
what happened to the mordant at the beginning, on the 2nd B ??
!!!!!
Super!!!!!
His timing must be immaculate!!
What is he using? a loop? sounds like theres more to it...
John Tenezaca He records each cell (part) with his foot tapping a pedal which records what he's previously played so he can play over it.
there are seven guitar parts but only one is played live, there is also two bass guitars that are meant to be panned over two speakers, its such an amazing peice of music i did it for gcse music nearly two years ago and still love it

I like this version of Electric Counterpoint - III. Fast by Steve Reich. Congrats to Andrew McKenna Lee.
+@Caitlyn R - its neither in G or E minor, steve reich is a minimalist composer, hes in neither G maj or E minor, he uses notes that are in g that cant be in E minor scale. therefore there is no set scale. Theres also 2 different time signatures, 3/2 & 12/8.
To is tonally ambiguous
cabbage000 It is in Em and Cm, Electric Counterpoint!
great job - it turns me on when U turn on distortion - makes me happy !
loved the effects
I totally dig your creative interpretation! Also check it my cover of this awesome piece! Cheers! Steve Reich - Electric Counterpoint(3rd Mvt.)
love listening to this with all the lights off at night, its so trippy ! :D
Due to every source saying a different thing, is this in G and Eb maj or E and C minor or E and C Aeolian mode? :S
E Aeolian and C Aeolian modes.
Interesting, dramatic interpretation! :-)
