DOOM said in an interview that he chose to wear a mask because he didn't like that hip-hop had become more about what you looked like and what brands you wore and less about the music.
The Mask: He was part if a rap group in his teens called KMD and they had a lot if success, they had radio hits and toured and stuff but he also hated being in the spotlight and felt it was a distraction to the music. Many years later when he came out with that first solo album under the name MF D00M he didn't want his past musical history to define the new effort of his. At least that is my best understanding of it.
This reaction was 10/10 best MF DOOM reaction I ever watched bruh. No cap. I could tell your enjoyment was genuine and you paid a lot of attention to each song! Instant sub and bell from me. Bro, I recommend you check out MF DOOM's album "Madvillainy". Many people consider it DOOM's greatest art. I know you'll enjoy.
Yo yo yo get on that Vaudeville Villain tip, it is just ONE of the MANY personas that MF DOOM had over his illustrious career. The whole-ass album, but if you need a taster track check out "Dead Mouse". Also DOOM made most of these beats on this album that you are reacting to
There are videos of how doom made certain beats, it's really cool. You get to see him magically turn 3 second clips from old cartoons he'd watch into insane beats. Also have to give props to Madlib, the best producer in hip hop history
MF DOOM is too genius. The best rapper of all time imo. It’s hard to think of other rappers whose lyrics are this deep and layered. Just one line could be referencing 4 other things or more, or maybe the way the words come together it sounds like a different sentence. “Let me think, don’t let her faint get Ishmael” I won’t get into the other meanings. But referencing the last line “everything that glitter ain’t fishscale” ie coke, saying don’t let a fiend get its smell. Ofc he said Ishmael, which references two Ishmaels. The Captain who hunted Moby Dick (Fishscale) & then Ishmael from Genesis. Who was technically Abraham’s first born son that was banished along with his Mother Hagar (Slave of Abraham’s wife Sarah who couldn’t conceive at the time) into the wilderness with low provisions, basically for Faith in God cuz he chose Isaac. His mom had to watch as Ishmael almost died from thirst. An angel spoke down to her, God heard her & Ishmael. He saved him with a well full of water & told his mother that he’d become a great ruler of a great nation & even have 12 descendants that’d be great rulers as well. “A shot of jack got her back” ofc this chick only needed a shot of jack instead of water for OD’ing on this “coke.” just cuz it glitters don’t mean it’s fishscale lol. Also the Ishmael bible reference is a great analogy to MFs persona DR DOOM. Who became the Great ruler of Latveria but instead of being banished with his mom, helped by God & being faithful. He actually had to oppose the devil himself after learning he was the one who killed his mother. I know I said I wouldn’t get into the other meanings.. & I didn’t lol. There’s more to dissect still but I’ll spare anyone reading this the trouble. But just know, MF DOOM was in another realm, El Kulum probably.
MF DOOM was and is the man. Most of the samples you skipped were from Dr. Doom in the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon. Doom loved that shit, and he rebranded himself after his brothers death, and seeing the entertainment industry. He said fuck that and Im going to do it my way. And he did!
for context, the mask and persona are based off the marvel character "doctor doom" (I feel like someone prolly said this already) but if you find it interesting enough, he was in a group in the 90s called "KMD" with his little brother (who died in 93 at like age 19) and another dude. I'd suggest the song "Peachfuzz" by KMD if you wanna see what he looked like earlier in life. Also KMD has a song called "what a nigga know?" that imo is a great track.
my bad if y’all wanted me to listen to the lil parts where he wasn’t rapping but i couldn’t do it 😂. 8.9/10 tho
DOOM said in an interview that he chose to wear a mask because he didn't like that hip-hop had become more about what you looked like and what brands you wore and less about the music.
that’s hard
There's a legend that in his early days he wore the mask to avoid being snatched by the cops

I never confirmed this, but his brother was also in KMD and they were dropped by their label after his brother was struck by a car@@skyecore

"He wears a mask just to cover the raw flesh, a rather ugly brotha with flows that's gorgeous"
-The Villain
the none rapped parts are genius too yo lol
He to young to have the attention span and overall vision of the theme of the project. With more experience and time he’ll understand.
Y'all catch that line "when she on the rag don't let her fry the Ragu"?
Mahfucka knew his swamp magic

The reason for the non rapped beats usually just there for intermission like a commercial break less as a skit
