L'unica eccelsa "umile ancella!"
Excellent comment and 100% true. The UA-cam clip of Mario del Monaco and Magda Olivero in Andrea Chenier is terrific. I bought the DVD from the Bel Canto Society, and I watch it often. Happy 100th Birthday to a great opera singer.
Yes, this sounds like the historic live recording with Simionato, Bastianini and Corelli--just wonderful. Thank you too for some beautiful photographs of this great artist.
Excuse me, do you happen to know if this was at La Scala? Olivero is otherworldly in this moving, melancholic aria, and she was partnered by three more greatnesses: Corelli, Bastianini, Simionato! What more could one wish for?
The comparison with Callas is apt . Magda Olivero also worked on her voice until it became a great vehicle of expression. Every nuance is captured here and if this can seem too much in a recording it would have been very exciting live in the context of a theatre.
Olivero stepped in for an indisposed Tebaldi and had a huge success that night. I like how much Magda modulates her sound and her style is authentic Italian verismo, now a lost tradition. But I miss Tebaldi in this performance.
@@Orfeus80 Sure. You can like a no-talent third-rater like Chiara and hate Olivero. You're perfectly free to have no taste. Not interested in anything else you have to say; blocked with pleasure!
@@genlyai5055 I didn't say I hate Olivero, just dislike her squeezed singing, milking every phrase to the death and voice full of holes and warts. Chiara is sublime compared to Oli
Magda Olivero totally outshines most modern singers, she basically eats them for breakfast. But let's be real, she's not quite in the same league as Callas or Tebaldi. Personally, I've never been a fan of her caprino, and her chest voice was weak and undeveloped. When it comes to the role of Adriana, I'd pick Muzio or Tassinari any day - they were just fabulous.
I would bag to differ of your comparison with Callas, in particular with Tebaldi ,God only gave her a lyric voice and much less flashy dramatic personality or outward attractiveness . However, the intensity & the depth of her interpretations almost always clutch’s relentlessly, please note that Callas and Tebaldi both had to quit fairly young , and when Callas came back briefly later on, the voice was without much of support. Tebaldi baldi had little to offer thru out. Of course I am only talking of vocal technique & musicianship here. By the way, I love Callas with all my heart still. 3:50
Look it up. Cilea considered Olivero the best diva ever to sing Adriana Lecouvreur. Your notions of 'sentimentality' are contemporary, uneducated, and ahistorical; they have nothing to do with proper verismo style or with great singing. Great art which was created in the past cannot be comprehended nor appreciated without extensive familiarity with its esthetics, its period, its style, and its cultural matrix.
@@genlyai5055 I was well aware of such an anecdote. Don't worry. However, such an hearsay/anecdote can only be taken at face value. It was said Refice encouraged Scotto to do Cecilia. So, is that trainwreck of a noise maker any good? I don't want to speak ill of Olivero. She's one of my favorite soprano despite her shortcomings.
+jmiller05 I think you wouldn't comment so harshly after having known that, according to the composer of that opera, Mrs. Olivero was the best performer ever of that role.
That kind of technic is almost forgotten. There was a line: Giannina Arangi-Lombardi-Leyla Gencer-Magda Olivero-Montserrat Caballé...What happen now? Only Sondra Radvanovsky can be close to that filato (and I think she never recorded Poveri fiori)Netrebko sings Adriana, but far from reaching this filato. What a time of emptyness...
This is amazing, the voice is so solid, like a rock then the emotion she puts into it gives me chills wow 🌟

This is the first recording of Magda's I'd heard (several years ago). I've been captivated ever since.

Meravigliosa. Struggente
Fate cantare quest'aria a quella noiosa della Sutherland......
The great Magda Olivero will be 100 years old in March 2010,. Oh.... how she lives this role.. Bravissima!
Hi! Thanks for the feedback!!! =)
Indeed, this is from the live recording with the cast of stars you've mentioned!
Hello! This recording is from Teatro di San Carlo, 1959. IF I'm not mistaken, it was her return to the stage after years of retreat.
Superb.
Excuse me, do you happen to know if this was at La Scala? Olivero is otherworldly in this moving, melancholic aria, and she was partnered by three more greatnesses: Corelli, Bastianini, Simionato! What more could one wish for?

Ineguagliabile

Oh FFS. Are you actually incapable of loving two different performances by two great but different singers? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@genlyai5055 I like Caballe, Chiara, Dessi, Petrella in the role too. Can't I dislike Olivero's performance?

A bit over the top but nicely done... she shows off her vocal control very well.
But over all I prefer Muzio
OMG - better than Callas and Tebaldi.
She manages to out "muzio" Muzio in this war-horse. A bit too sentimental, but nevertheless very affective.
Do try to learn something about opera. Cilea begged Olivero to reappear in this role, calling her the best-ever Adriana.
