Hey everyone! I'm back with another reaction to Taylor Swift! As per your recommendations, I decided to check out one of her live performances. This video - the intro to her reputation tour live show and 'Ready for It' - was mentioned by a bunch of people so I thought it'd be a good choice! Let me know what I should check out next!

“He can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor” is such a good lyric. When people tell me her lyrics are simple I’m like….oooh you are not listening closely.
she does a 3.5 hour show and every moment of it absolutely spectacular, taylor is a part everything when it comes to her music, everything is done for a reason, this tour/album was after the internet “canceled” her in 2016 over a fabricated phone call between her and kanye west, she was called a snake, calculated, fake, and she turned it around and made it into something to be proud of, this whole era is basically a fuck you to everyone who made her feel hated and not loved, this was the highest grossing female tour at the time, which she has now beat out with the eras tour lol, i think she has such a strong fan base because she truly cares about all aspects of this, the music helps her, and she helps us with it as well
also this song is about her then boyfriend at the time, they were falling in love when all of this was happening, this album (reputation) is basically full of love songs about him and how he didn’t care about the “reputation” that was given to her by the media and really helped her when she was feeling like the world hated her, it’s my favorite album of hers

It’s always fun seeing people listen to this song for the first time, usually it catches people off guard.
This song and “I did something bad” and “don’t blame me” all from the reputation tour are what converted me from a devout metal head into a full fledged swiftie! Lol Taylor’s live performances, her crafty and heartfelt lyricism, her singing and musical talent, her dedication to her fans and everyone involved in her shows, all just go to show what an amazing person she is and how undeserving of all the hate she is. I have mad respect for this woman and I’ve only been here a few weeks! Have fun going down the rabbit hole! I’ll be right there with you!
Burton to this Taylor was the line that turned me into a Swiftie. I started listening to her, skeptically, about a year ago when my nieces became fans. NEVER expected to like her music, but she's very talented and smart. Give em hell, Taylor.

I would recommend that you watch her MsAmericana doc or do a react to it, before delving deeper into TS. It will help your understanding of where the songs/concerts themes come from. It definitely will enrich your experience if you’re going to do more TS

Somebody said that lyric was a reference to Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor (who was famous for having rare violet coloured eyes).
Yes!!! She said Burton to this Taylor! She often plays with words, and you can bet there are usually deeper meanings and/or easter eggs imbedded in them. Reputation is her "badass" era! You would probably love the rest of the show, it's amazing! Also, sorry to hear about your struggles, ty for sharing/being vulnerable. I don't think anyone would mind that you need time to care for yourself❤ tyty for this reaction!
As you will see, if you follow the suggestions to "I Did Something Bad", she even hires Broadway people for the design of her shows. So it's never just her singing. It's always a spectacle and an addition to the story telling!

Great reaction. I have to especially give you credit for picking up on the “Burton to this Taylor” line. You are the first live reactor that I have ever seen catch that reference on first hearing it. Of course, many younger people today barely, if at all, know who Elizabeth Taylor was, and even fewer know of Richard Burton or of their tempestuous relationship. Kudos.
If you're a rock girl than doing We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together from the 1989 World Tour is an absolute must!

You got the concept of reputation spot on, she always uses ever medium available to paint a story. The whole album makes you think you are going into a revenge album but its actually about her finding love in the middle of this media frenzy.

The Reputation Stadium Tour was 2018. Please watch "Don't Blame Me" from the Reputation Tour. So many songs are really better live. I'm so glad you watched this one. It's a great place to get your feet wet.

I'm really enjoying your Taylor reactions (all 2 of them lol). I'm so glad you took our advice and went with this one! I think you should do Don't Blame Me from Reputation Tour next. It is one of her most epic live performances and I'm positive you'll be impressed. I would also recommend I Did Something Bad but the only video on YT is a bad mashed up version, so... 😕
After that, for something completely different, I'd suggest My Tears Ricochet from the Long Pond sessions. I'm not sure if it's your vibe (folksy, indie-pop) but it's a beautifully written song about the sale of her masters to her biggest enemy, and it showcases how versatile she is as a songwriter and performer.
My Tears Ricochet is an excellent suggestion and could also be the one.

This show is a lot of fun. If you enjoyed these, I would suggest I Did Something Bad and Don’t Blame Me. If you’ve only got time for one, I would lean towards the latter.
If you didnt know already, the concert production is almost entirely performed by her live band, most of whom have been with her since very early in her career, along with most of her backup vocalists and dancers. She is loyal to them, and they to her, which is one of the things I find most appealing about her. And her mic is always on, there is no lip syncing (though sometimes one of the backups doubles her part). Later in the concert, the band is revealed, and they join her on stage for some of the songs.
Definitely check out her rock versions of I Knew You Were Trouble & We Are Never Getting Back Together from the 1989 World Tour
And she definitely gives a lot of thought into every aspects of her show

I wholeheartedly agree with other suggestions to watch Don’t Blame Me and I Did Something Bad both Live from Reputation Tour next. IMO the trio of these 3 songs from the Rep Tour are kind of like a TS palette cleanser that do a really really good job re-setting (often long held) expectations (and misconceptions) about her as an artist. I know for me, and it seems for many other new reactors, this re-set seems to open up your ability to then dive into some variety and not layer on expectations or “compare” to early work as much.
I am 54, never intentionally listened to TS before 8 months ago and pretty much had the stereotypical limited view of who she was and what her music was like. I started down this rabbit hole in the last 8 months to try to understand the fascination and devotion and passion of her fans. II understand now.
I spent some time the other day thinking about what 20 or so songs/performances would I chose and how would I order them to open up someone’s mind and help them really get a sense of the breadth and depth and variety that I now know she has. I put together the following to share with some people and thought I’d share here if it is useful to anyone who is interested in diving in and doesn’t know where to start.
I kept coming back to thinking that for the reasons above I would start just about anyone with the 3 Rep Tour songs recommended throughout these comments and above. Then, I consistently came back to thinking I would next suggest dialing it back and doing a trio of songs/videos that so far in my journey I have come to believe represent some of her very best and most captivating and beautiful work. Specifically, I would do:
** My Tears Ricochet (Folklore, Long Pond Studio Session version)
** Exile (Folklore, Long Pond Studio Session version)
** All Too Well (The Short Film).
I think regardless of taste in music, after opening your mind with the Rep Tour trio to a different Taylor than you likely even conceived existed, doing these 3 songs next can seal your understanding of how truly remarkable she is as a songwriter, singer, and artist, with nearly unmatched story telling talent and an innate gift to make most people FEEL and relate and connect to the music in a way that demonstrates the power of music. At least that has been my experience and has been what I have seen and heard from others. This back to back trio formula had me hooked and I haven’t been able to stop since and have found that discovering Taylor is like peeling an onion, constantly finding new layers and talents and depth. I truly never would have expected it.
So after the back to back trios, I would probably recommend watching Miss Americana, if you had not yet.
Then if I was told I had limited time and song slots to convince you of to buy in to the rabbit hole and I had to pick only a limited menu from her vast catalogue (frankly a majority of which I probably still have never heard personally), I would probably recommend the songs/videos listed below if the goal was to make selections that would allow someone to see the true breadth and depth of her range, across genres AND topics to show that she has a LOT of subject matter in her catalogue that is not comprised of formulaic breakup songs like her early work (which one should keep in mind was written when she was a teenager!! And to be fair breakups and makeup and new love consume a large portion of the mental and emotional energy and time of teenagers), but rather is comprised of lyrics and melodies that are emotionally mature, intelligent and range from simple to complex, that people of all ages can emotionally connect to and often see their own similar stories in the lyrics, while also showcasing great song writing, story telling, singing ability, vocal range, performance mastery, acting skills, and astonishing creativity, as well as demonstrating her unique and often funny personality and willingness to poke fun at herself, her fierce yet gentle and caring heart, her strength, her willingness to be introspective but also call others out on their BS, and to tackle difficult and touchy subjects, and even the ability to write some mature and sexy lyrics that might make you blush. This would be a menu that would provide sufficient variety of songs and performances from fun and silly to serious and deep, to painful, joyful, warm, to impactful and empowering, with choices based in actual experiences, fiction, fantasy and even satire, and ultimately I think the menus would allow everyone, even picky eaters, to find at least one menu option that would fit their personal taste.

I am sure true Swifties who have a much better understanding of her catalogue may have even better suggestions than these, but based on my journey so far I have found these to meet the broad “intro to TS” goals. And I believe after you get a broad sense of her range and talent and the variety, it is potentially easier to pick a place start into deeper dives, like diving into specific albums or themes or lives or music videos or writing/lyrics, etc.
I also think that this approach gives a wider and more realistic perspective of her talent and work than say diving into one era, and which I think then gives an interesting perspective that lends itself to going back and sampling some of her earlier work and the massive radio hits that frankly turn many off, perceived as more bubble gum pop and annoying, like Shake it Off, and We are Never Getting Back Together. I have found that with the broader perspective of her work, I can see those singe now in a different light, and I can see more depth and catch word plays or meanings or messages you didn’t even know were there before. You can also better see how incredibly and uniquely talented she really was at that age as a song writer, even if the songs themselves aren’t your cup of tea.
Anyway, this was long but maybe it will be useful for someone. I had fun thinking through it and thought maybe it would be of value to someone. 😊

Oh, hell yeah! I can't wait to finish work and watch this bad boy. Don't know which edit you're using but if you can get a hold of the actual doc (that was til recently on Netflix) that is the best one. Obviously, that'd be hard to not get blocked on here though! Whether you react or not, I highly recommend watching the whole concert. Yeah, of course the Eras Tour is rightfully making all the headlines but I really, really love the Rep Tour movie. It's killer

You like this side of her you have to react to Don't Blame Me - Reputation Tour. It's the song and performance that made me a forever fan after having ignored her forever. "King of my Heart" kills it too. Singing "be Burton to this Taylor" is her acknowledging that this is the most intense good/bad relationship, the one all others will be compared to and that no one else can get each other off as much or makes them feel as intensely as this relationship which is why they keep coming back together. She also refers to this intense good/bad dynamic in "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "We are never getting back together" which is when she decided to finally end it. "Ready for it" was her way of wrapping up and explaining to herself the reasons behind those two previous songs.
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor both loved each other and hated how much they loved each other so intensely. They were always either fighting or f***ing. So Intense, It hurt so good.

Idk if you heard in the beginning the media said - she’s at the top but has she done some sketchy things to get there? and Taylor bringing attention to herself with her donations…The media really skewered her at times.
If you like rock check out the live version of We're Never Getting Back Together from the 1989 tour. Insane performance and shows off her versatility. It sounds nothing like the pop version, and she is actually pretty insane with an electric guitar (hard to tell but it looks like a Fender Jaguar). Cool video, subscribed.

@@Violet316 Actually no, Taylor signed that publishing deal with SONY/ATV in 2004 and it lasted until 2019. The same CEO of SONY/ATV is the same Tomlinson that now is the CEO of UMG where she has her new publishing deal(republic records is her US record label)so she has worked with him for her whole songwriting career.
The same year she signed her publishing deal, she met Scott Borchetta (BMR record label) when she was playing a gig at the bluebird cafe. He wanted her to be his first artist at his new label, but he didn´t have that label yet, so he asked her to wait to sign with other record labels and wait for him to start his. And she agreed. In 2005 she signed her contract with BMR. So her deal with SONY/ATV was a musical publishing deal and her deal with BMR was a record deal.
A music publisher invests in songwriters and composers and controls musical compositions, whereas a record company invests in artists and controls master recordings. Not all songwriters and composers are recording artists and many recording artists don't write their own songs.
@@yara5502 No, Taylor was signed to Big Machine Records after 13 years she left. She signed with Scott Borchetta in 2006 when he was just starting out, and she left in Nov 2018. I don't know where you got your information, but you can find this information by Googling it. If you see any of Taylor's old music on her channel it will say Big Machine Records. It will also say it on her Cds and albums. She was signed to Sony in 2004, but they decided to shelf her music.
@@deaditeera No, she was new and Sony had decided she or her music wasn't ready for the world. When she signed with Big Machine, if she had more knowledge she would have gotten more rights to her music. But instead 100% of the rights went to Scott, and we all know how that went.
