  • I've spent a lot of time in Finland away from my home country of England, so I thought I was qualified enough to share the observations I have made between the two countries! (English subtitles available - I'd love ANYONE forever who can help out with Finnish subtitles! Find out how to here: • Video )

    Finnish people might be good with languages (especially English) but we'll still apologise for speaking "bad" English! :D We tend to aim for perfection and anything else is usually unacceptable.

      +Mia Heikkinen Yes! I get that a lot! It's funny when Finns apologise for their "bad" English because most of the time it's better than mine! haha

      Yeah, most Finnish people will probably feel a bit self-conscious or shy to speak English, even if they speak it completely understandably (often more so than native speakers with certain dialects).
      A lot of that is because the formal English education in Finland is *heavily* concentrated on the written language - both in reading comprehension, and actually producing text. Listening comprehension is reasonably well represented as well, and commonly supplemented by the deluge of mass media spoken in English, so a lot of people can just watch English films and TV series without subtitles, or use subtitles for support only. So people usually have no problem reading, writing, and listening to English and understanding it.
      The least represented part of formal English learning in Finland is actually using the language in spoken form. The problem is that learning to speak a language fluidly is a long process, and basically requires getting to the level where you can "switch" your thinking mode between different languages. Before you get there, you have to sort of "pre-assemble" your sentences, translating them from Finnish thoughts to English, and that is difficult and cumbersome because English is such a different language from Finnish. The translation process is slow when you have to think of the word order and prepositions instead of noun cases, etc.
      Not only that, but while you're still thinking in "Finnish Mode", you're also going to pronounce the English words in a very distinctly Finnish way - for examples, see the Hydraulic Press Channel. Thinking in your own language while trying to speak a foreign language is really difficult; in fact, when you *do* manage to switch your thinking to a foreign language, it causes a pretty profound change in how you process the words and say them.
      One example of this I've noticed in myself is that if I'm speaking English and then have to say a Finnish name - a person or a place - I actually have to switch back to Finnish for the duration of that name and then back to English, if I want that name to come out with the proper Finnish pronunciation. Otherwise, the "English Mode" ends up affecting the way I say the word. I'm no brainologist, but I think it has something to do with how your speech center adjusts to the production and pronunciation of different languages, or something.
      But I digress. Even for Finns who can think in English and speak it more or less fluidly, most of us have not had the opportunity to continuously use English in conversations with native speakers, so even if our English is grammatically correct and we have a good vocabulary, we can still feel a bit self-conscious or even shy about the "incorrect" way we might say certain words.
      In reality, though, the most important thing about language skill is that you can effectively communicate with it. And if you compare even the most bog standard, jarring Finnish-style English accent to properly thick Glaswegian or Yorkshire accents, I'd say the Finnish accent is probably going to be more universally understandable as "English".
      But good luck trying to convince someone that their English is just fine...

    This was hilarious :D when you said you were going to say 'moi' to that woman I was here shaking my head like no no no no what are you doing, you don't just greet random people on the streets, she is going to be traumatized if you do.... haha so no wonder she looked terrified :DD if a stranger says hi to you it means that they have something to say and they are going to start a conversation with you (and that is really strange)

    • @davecad

    • @DDranks

      +Dave Cad I think that if you greet somebody on the street, they'll get this awkward feeling that "am I supposed to know you from somewhere", and because they aren't sure, they get confused. I think Finnish people don't really greet or expect to be greeted by random people, only people they know, or are going to have some business with.

      +fxc2 This is right! Elderly and old people greets and exchange few (really few) words sometimes when they walk towards you . But if someone says with great smile "Moi!" to me it gives feeling "Do I know that person?"

  • @Mikirlav
    @Mikirlav 8 років тому +69

    Lol. It's awkward just to make eye contact with a stranger when you're walking around let alone have someone greet you. If a stranger says "Moi" to me, I'll most likely think
    a) they are drunk
    b) they have some issues
    c) they want something from me which will result in me awkwardly stopping to see what it is they need
    d) am I supposed to know them?
    What baffled me in Britain was the way they apologise for everything. Especially in Scotland but also in London. I could just end up going to the same aisle in a store with another person and they would say "sorry". Like.. what are you apologising for? You're not in my way, you didn't bump into me, you didn't do anything worth an apology. Why? I always feel rude when I visit Britain because they are so goddamn polite there and I'm not used to it in Finland.

      I'm sorry we apologise too much 😅 people have walked into me, accidentally hit me (or intentionally who knows) or cut in front of me and I've apologised, it's just the instinctive British reflex, it must be pretty funny for foreigners to watch two British people walk into each other. So I guess I'm trying to say sorry or I'm not sorry maybe...kinda? Nah you're right I'm sorry

    • @arronmarshall1527
      @arronmarshall1527 6 років тому +3

      I know this comment is a year old, but thought I'd comment anyway. We tend to use "sorry" in different ways now. For instance it could mean "excuse me" or "pardon". So if you're wanting to pass someone a typical Brit may say "Sorry, excuse me" to get past people or if you're in a supermarket and you're trying to ask someone where something is, they may reply with "sorry" meaning " Sorry, I didn't hear you, say again". I imagine it can be confusing when someone takes the word as an apology. :D

      +MiroKappa Really a good quip. I was just today thinking of emigrating from Finland.... in the hope that my pension is sufficient to live anywhere (I'm over sixty, with debts, naturally, over the house and such). But anyhoo: today I noticed in the internet that there's a town for sale in the USA called Hell. Now, c'moon! It's unbelievable cheap. Being born in Finland, the saying goes: you won the lottery. (Child care, education and blaa blaa.) But when you reach the age 50, or so about, you notice that you need anothet lottery win because ot the taxes and whatever. I've been and done with Paradise. Hell might be worth a try.

    the problem with saying hello to a stranger is that foreigners tend to hold the eye contact too long which means that you want to interact with the stranger, and that scares the shit out of most finns. also moi/hei with a smile and eye contact means that you're hoping to have a conversation. a bit more formal and not too friendly huomenta/päivää/iltaa with just short eye contact and maybe a nod won't scare the finns that much :D

  • @jonnenne

    About those flags and nametags: You often need to take a test to get the flag and it often raises your salary a bit. So some people just haven't taken the test because of whatever reason (temporary job or fear of tests maybe?).

    • @jukka-pekkatuominen4540
      @jukka-pekkatuominen4540 8 років тому +7

      +jonnenne Or just being a new employee. Also for some of the less frequent languages there won't even be an opportunity to take that test except at certain dates. If you happen to be busy or haven't worked there at the time you wouldn't get your flag.

      Only if your not part of the group, if you are part of a group like a class or a job it becomes pretty easy to get to know people, if you have no reason to know someone, then it is almost impossible without lots of beer, this I have found out from living in Finland...
      It's hard to know though if Finnish people generally get tired from hanging out with people as introverted people do, or energized from it as extroverts do, there seems to be a good mix of introverts and extroverts on the whole, you just can't really get to know them unless there is a reason to.

But after living a year in England and having moved back to Finland, I understand them on a whole new level. Now I'm watching these to prepare for a trip to my former English home village. I miss being able to say hello and smile to strangers without causing them to feel like their privacy has been compromised.

  • @HelsinkiPhil

    I've lived here for 17+ years, and the speaking to strangers bit - I was just like Sorbet, going "Oh no, no, you _didn't_". I was here two months maybe, and in the centre of Helsinki an old dear, 10 yards or so in front of me, dropped one of her gloves. I ran/jogged to it, picked it up, approached her, touched her on the arm and said "excuse me" - and she DID do a runner. Left me standing there thinking "wtf just happened".
    And your reaction at 4:26 is just _priceless_ - I still play the dumb Englishman with shop assistants occasionally just to see what will happen, and your experience is not uncommon.
    No idea how I ended up here, but I'm glad I did. Thanks for the laugh.

    Hei is used mostly if you are going to continue talking but works perfectly without conversation too and is the most official way to say hello so it is used by people in service sector (stores, hotels etc.)
    Terve might be the best way to say hello to the strangers. At least I prefer that rather than moi :D

    90% Of Finnish people know English.
    That 10% is normally just old people (Cause back then there was no way for you to really learn English.) or just some idiots who thought it was "cool" not to learn English.
    So you don't really need to worry about people not understanding you. After all Finland is known for really good education.
    The only problem you might stumble on to are old people. As i said. They might not know anything about English.

    About those little padges: The test you have to take is actually quite hard. They want to make sure you cant speak the language VERY well before you get one of those padges. However there is an upside to this: You make 1 euro /hour more (roughly) for each padge they have even if they never have to use the language in work. Ofcourse the place they work in can decide what languages are importat enough for this but usually its almost any language in finland since we get visitors all over the world. Also knowing even 4-5 different languages (finnish not involved ofc) is already a big thing as anyone would know who has studied more then a few ones.

    So yeah we don't use the greetings to greet people randomly on the street. In shops you greet the cashier. We don't really even nod, not necessarily even smile. We just give them some berth. And yes, that's polite. I do often smile at children a bit though because I think they'll feel safer. It's more about the expression you have on your face in general, which is allowed to be a smile.
    "Moi" is a pretty informal greeting and you'd normally use it either when
    a) talking to children
    b) young people talking amongst themselves
    c) someone you actually know, but who is not elderly
    So when you said "moi" to a stranger it would have been quite unexpected for her. But more generally I just mind my own business without being totally oblivious to if someone's actually in need of help. Just leave the "hello" out actually, and ask that granny if she needs help carrying her bags if you feel like it. That's more idiomatic. Except if you're the one who needs help, in which case you could say "Hei, anteeksi..." - that's to catch their attention not to greet them see. "Hei" is the most neutral and versatile.
    On the whole you gotta look at what others are doing and try to be kinda neutral yourself if you're not quite sure. Or just embrace the awkwardness, because you're not causing anyone harm exactly :/
    "Stores language badges" - I think that's just in Stockmann isn't it? :D Well I can't remember other places. Hotels?
    Anyway nice vid and good luck!

      Yes! They're big huggers! I think it's a Scandinavian thing. it's nice though because you know where you stand with them! there's no oooh should I shake their hand or hug them...it's straight in for a hug. no questions asked! :D

    • @spengu64
      @spengu64 8 років тому

      +Dave Cad Weird, usually we just do handshakes. Girls hug a lot more than boys. But during the recent years, young people have started hugging while they are sober, which is not usual for Finns. I think it is great change to be more open. Still it is awkward if someone stands little too close to you, you get a feeling that they will rob you. We have the 1m diameter private area circle around us and you need a permission to come inside the circle xD

    I strongly agree with the "native English speakers would struggle to get the English test approval"

    Yes well, we do not talk to strangers unless either is asking for help... which brings up an idiom "tehdä tikusta asiaa". Basically it means you ask help for SOMETHING just to make contact. As a foreigner -- well, you could ask them to teach you Finnish, explain something or if you already know enough... begin to fill a crossword puzzle and ask about some words. Have you seen just how many little booklets with nothing but crosswords or other puzzles there are for sale in Finland?

      UA-cam can be a very dangerous place and it's really the best to avoid having pictures of yourself on it, especially at such a young age.

    Well in Finnish school we have to learn at least Finnish, Swedish (the second official language) and English, for only about 15 million people speak Finnish or Swedish in the entire world whereas English is spoken by hundreds of millions of people :D I myself speak Finnish as my native language, but I also manage by speaking German, English, Swedish or Spanish, and recently I've started learning French. Many elderly people do not know any other language than Finnish though. What you said about the Finnish people is also true; we hardly even talk to our friends. When I was in Germany as an exchange student people were terrified about how quiet I was and thought I'm somehow depressed, but that's just because of my Finnish roots. I've never become acquainted with people who speak a lot :D Finnish seasons are nowadays becoming a myth, for during christmas it's often raining, the winter is delayed by a whole month and it's quite normal to see snowfall in June, even in the southern Finland.
