you could lift that stone straight on that base without using wood.

While that technically might be possible... doing so risks one slip causing damage to the stone or base. Not worth it. Going a little slower with the wood prevents all risks of damage.

fair enough. we only used wood in that way when the stone was too heavy to put straight on.
