Good Wizard (G-d for short) believes in all of us and his Holy Text tells us Harey Potter is the true magical savior bcuz he defied inept tyranny to fight the greater evil and won. Austin 3:2-4 explains "G-d shall guide His ministry and His Word shall be shared in all their promos. His Word has all the answers, but this chapter of this particular book will give believers the questions to ask in the course of spreading the Word of G-d to those most in need of His saving magic. believers told me many times, they choose the word "yes", and "positive" attitude.
i was very young, when i understood i must choose the word "no", to be "negative".
quite an intellectual choice! i was amazed by what i learned back then, preparing for an exam, maybe, that all logic can be satisfied with onlt these elements: "no", NAND, NOR, all "negative". i understood all logic, in its entirety, is like a world, well, all physical objects can be considered logical constructions, therefore few "negative" elements can build all Universe, and i understood that "yes" cannot build reality. "negative" elements satisfy all possible requirements, where any "yes"is made of "no no". so i learned respect for the "negative" part of reality. quite a list of things i understood, yet the believers told me how good is to believe only in "positive", while they had close to no understanding of any of it.

I think a lot of why a lot of people believe in religion because it gives quick, easy, "comfy" answers that never change (thereby some degree of familiarity and security), compared to science which tells harsher truths, changes (as we learn new things), and in near constant progress.
Edit: before anyone gets on my case, I'm on the side of science, cause learning new things is fun, even at the potential cost of paradigm shifts.

I say this because the eye was precisely the example that Darwin himself used in his book to address how such complex organs could develop over time through evolutionary processes. He anticipated the eye being used as an argument _against_ evolution and chose it for his example for that very reason.
If apologists cannot bring themselves to read the most fundamental book on the subject, "The Origin of Species", then you know they've failed to study the subject at all.

I feel like I understand this person's perspective. I remember when I was barely an adult, I had a right wing christian point of view, and I would debate people who disagreed with me on forums and chat rooms, but I felt like the arguments weren't victories enough, so I deliberately sought out the most liberal and progressive thinkers and writers and read their books, eager to rip them apart.
Basically, this guy is challenging you, because he thinks he's found the absolute truth, and he's basically playing chess, trying to checkmate you, so he can feel validated in believing "the truth".
I bet you can probably tell, having read and examined the evidence behind my opponent's arguments back in the day, I stopped being religious and I became a moderate left leaning person on the compass, which the US would consider "far left" (which is nonsense, there's like 4 political parties to the left of me just here in Norway).
This guy isn't looking for the truth, he thinks he's found it, and he's eager to defeat you with the equivalent of a checkmating attempt on move 2 of a chess game. When he finds that he failed to checkmate you with his rhetorical questions, and your answers appear stronger and more convincing than his rhetoric, he won't know what to do. Because he hasn't actually learned how to think yet, or how to play "chess" in this analogy.
Now he's going to go try to find some stronger arguments so he can still checkmate you with easily answered questions, because he won't even feel like he's wrong, yet. He needs to bump into even more answers he can't refute before he starts asking questions that actually seek answers, instead of seeking to stump you.
It might not happen right away, or ever, but if he fails to checkmate every atheist he speaks to, over and over again, he might stop believing he has all the answers and is a better chess player than every atheist. He might even get curious enough to listen to your answers and accept them as valid, though that's a stretch.
When you believe you can't be wrong, being shown to be wrong doesn't even register as such. You trick yourself into believing you are still right, which is part of that auto-deception you keep talking about. I'm supposedly a smart guy, according to an IQ test, but there's arrogance and stubbornness in believing you're right without being able to justify it to anyone but yourself.
Even a generally smart person can trick themselves into believing nonsense if they genuinely think it's the best explanation. You have to find something you actually believe is better before you start to let go. This person might take months, years, or forever to actually believe his line of reasoning is a failure.
But if he does reach that conclusion, something unlocks, and he stops being a pawn of a system of lies, and starts actually using that smart brain he probably has, and then he, like me, can tell the story of how he stopped lying to himself.
At a certain point you stop trying to use "one weird trick to stump every atheist" with "questions atheists can't answer" because atheists can always answer those questions. When you stop trying to win and start trying to learn, it stops being an adversarial position, and learning can happen.
It's easier to be a student when you accept your teacher has something to say worth listening to, as opposed to thinking your goal is to defeat the teacher.

That's very insightful. The fact that you were able and willing to be subject yourself to such self examination is admirable and impressive. I think you and I have some things in common. When I was a younger adult, I was a right leaning bigot. I was not religious, but I was a racist and generally a very angry person. I was also homophobic, which is sad because I have been having secret, homosexual relationships since I was sixteen years old. I kept it very secret, and was full of self hatred. So I turned that hatred outwards and pointed my anger and frustration at those I blamed for my problems. It took years for me to embrace my sexuality and overcome my bigotry and racism. The strange thing is that I am mostly attracted to black men. I couldn't accept that as a younger man, so I turned my attraction to them into hate. I am now similar to you politically, it sounds. I am a left leaning moderate. I am a happy and very content person, who embraces myself and life. Life is much better when you let go of anger and hate.

I read recently that fanaticism is always a sign of repressed doubt.
To me, that means that faith is simply burying your voice of reason in your head because, if you're intelligent, you can't stop it.
Your brains knows that something doesn't add up but since you assume that religious authority are telling you the truth and want what's best for you, you think that you are the problem, you think that if it doesn't add up because it you that has faulty logic and is just not good enough. The thing is, the more you think, the more holes you find, the more faith you need. You can't fathom having told lies
''Burying'' that voice can be anything such as praying or reading an ''holy book''. Think about it, if you're convinced that your beliefs are true, why would you read the bible daily or go to the church every Sunday or pray fives times a day ? Unfortunately for them they can't just stop thinking and will need to do all that crap all over again.

    • @stylis666
      @stylis666 4 місяці тому +2

Yeah, there are terms for that. Making things make sense that don't and can't make sense because they're untrue is called rationalizing. Thinking you are the problem in such a case, when you are evidently not, is called gaslighting. Doing and encouraging that constantly, like all religions do because they require it to exist, is abusive. And the more inquiring you are the more abusive religion is.
And church leaders and even many followers will indeed encourage people to pray and go to church a lot and literally say out loud that when people don't they'll lose their faith and leave the church and/or religion.
That also means they don't care if it's true or how the person(s) is/are doing. They care about victimization and the numbers of victims because the more they have the more influence and protection they have against actual reality and honesty.
So yeah, what you said is absolutely true and it means that all theistic religions are intrinsically extremely mentally and emotionally abusive with extreme behavioural and experiential consequences for the victims and the societies they're part of and spread their lies in. And all theists are victims, enablers, and abusers, even when they are just painting an example that believing in a god is not harmful. It always is and it's always abusive. There is not non abusive way to have faith without objectively verifiable evidence.
That also makes _having_ verifiable evidence, that counts as evidence when defined as pointing to one fact, sometimes in context of more evidence, a great litmus test. If you have none, it's not even worth considering as a hypothesis.
If we are mistaken about what the evidence points to, having more people verify and scrutinize it helps correcting that. So if we wish to be less wrong and more correct, for instance to help people to unnecessarily die and/or suffer less, we should always welcome scrutiny and criticism. Rejecting those things is a huge red flag and should be an instant invitation to get all the tools and people out to scrutinize it to pieces. If it then still holds up, it's probably true, like gravity and evolution.

Question to any Muslim seeing this: When does the Quran become so holy that it allow to murder someone that burn it?
Like is the PDF that contain the text of the Quran holy and is it a sin to delete that file after it is sent to the press?
Is it the ink or the paper that make the printed Quran holy?
All the printed pages that was poorly printed, is it a sin to recycle them even they can contain the full texts of 50 Qurans?
What if a bookstore can not sell all Qurans and then run out of business and need to throw away with the knowledge they may be burned to generate heating for a town?
How do the "Holy book" thing nowadays, when do it become holy without some been blessing them?

Aron you've really helped me through my cognitive dissonance on religion thank you.
When you talked about the different religions telling their flock not to listen to anybody who tries to persuadethem with logical arguments and facts, it resonated with me. I'm an ex Jehovah's Witness and the leader's say to not even engage with anyone once they feel their faith threatened by logical reasoning. They're told to avoid like the plague ex Jehovah's Witnesses who start speaking to them, the leaders are afraid out of their mind that what ex Jehovahs witnesses say will make perfect sense but what they say is always coupled with " God will clear up everything we don't understand ". The fact is the members ignore false teachings they've made for 150 years. They say they speak for God but then revise approximately 50% of their teachings from their history. I got tired of ignoring yellow and red flags under penalty of destruction and no eternal life on earth. At least they didn't teach hell is a burning place. I only feared that after I deep dived every other Christian denomination and Islam lol. I've given 40 years of my life being terrified I'm not worshipping God right. I've finally just recently felt a lot of relief, especially from watching your logical reasonings for so many absurd Bible passages. Thank you again. I spent 12 years deconstructing but you' Araon are putting the nail in the coffin of believing something that contradicts itself so badly.

      "Well ackshually..."
Yeah, actually it also means peace, but there's a little issue with that. Muslims don't use the term the same way we do. To muslims, peace is synonymous to and always reliant on submission.
When a muslim uses that excuse it's the exact same tactic as when any theists says that we all have faith and that it means _being confident in._ Except we don't use faith meaning being confident without good reason or evidence, and we wouldn't use the word peace to mean having paid protection money to the maffia so they'll leave us alone for the time being. We'd call that extortion, and blind, baseless faith.
