Music seems to attract a lot of delusional people. The plain fact is that it's a lousy career unless you are truly exceptional. Being merely competent means you are doomed to pub gigs or lounge music at best. I'm a half decent musician and my teachers pressed me to go pro but I knew I wasn't really good enough. I get a lot of pleasure as an amateur - and that's what that lady should be doing. As you say, her poor mum has likely lost the family jewels...
