    Thanks Tom, that was a great video. Loved the "Avant Garde" imagery in places. I learned stuff about brighteners, old picture tubes, and even the pope! But more than anything I learned that you should NEVER, wait... ALWAYS handle a tube by the neck. Hmmm. So much to think about....

      Lol. Thanks!
      That 16GP4 sticker is up there with the one inside the tuner shield of my Blond Zenith Winthrop (from the Zenith Coburg part 3 video)...The sticker says something to the effect of "this sticker prevents corrosion, do not remove"...The only rust in the entire set is around that sticker!
      Coming from a half Catholic, half Baptist family one of the few things there's no debate over is that nobody likes 'Fraaancis'...Hmm, Sounds like a OTA sitcom. I may come back and edit that part of the video down since I want to be gainfully employed and the 'mother problems' crowd likes to get people fired over not saying positive things about them (despite suing for discrimination whenever they get fired for doing obnoxious things).
      Double standards and irony...They make the world go round!

      @@tomcarlson3913 It is certainly true the world is driven by "double standards and irony"! This really is a great video on vintage TV repair and I think you should leave it. Thanks again for making them - such a great way to share your experiences, knowledge and share a laugh.

    Awesome content Tom. When I want to bump up the voltage on a CRT, I have a half taken apart B&K CRT tester that I de pinned the heater voltage off off of and then I and I tap into the CRT filament wires, first disconnecting those from transformer or flyback. Works pretty good and I successfully blew up a weak Trinitron CRT a few years back. It was fun forcing it into H-K short. The colors emanating from the neck were we're a site to see😆

      Hi Shawn, do you happen to know where a person can buy the upper knob for a zenith porthole TV? I’m missing the left side upper knob.

    The fact that one could zoom from the standard 4:3 aspect ratio to completely filling in the screen now makes sense. Many years ago in the 1970's was looking through some old National Geographics what always had ads for just this type of round screened TV. Somewhere there is an old 1950's Elizabeth Taylor flick to where she was dating a TV repair guy and here father in the story, had a new TV delivered to which they brought the CRT and put it in the cabinet. A minor plot line but if anyone knows that the movie was .

    Another interesting video - thank you. I hadn't seen a set like that before and I wonder how many of these survive today?

    • @tomcarlson3913

      I've currently got 4 Porthole set, 2 Working Zeniths, a working Raytheon and a Stromberg-Carlson project set.
      They still survive in decent numbers, but they're impossible to find local if you don't live in an area that had a TV station before 1952, and there wasn't a decent sized middle class population there back then.

      ~25 years of radio collecting + ~16 of TV collecting (plus phones, fans and obsolete recording formats) = a nice collection.

      I need to find some cheap large fluorescent fixtures second hand one of these days. It would have been much better if it wasn't parked in the dead zone between 2 bright fixtures.

    Hi, can you please tell me approximately what the value is on these zenith porthole tv in good original condition model G4238RZ1

    • @tomcarlson3913
      @tomcarlson3913  6 місяців тому +1

      They vary depending on where you live*, if the CRT is good, and condition. If there's a radio built in the value will be lower because of the size. With the CRT untested I'd ask $100 and take the first $40 offer. If the CRT tests good I'd ask $175 and take the first $80 offer. If the set works** well enough to light most of the screen to working perfect I'd ask $300 and take the first $150 offer (if you professionally restored it's electronics I'd stand firm at $250 unless desperate to sell).
      **If it has not been electrically restored (all lytic and paper capacitors replaced) in the last decade and hasn't been powered on in over 2 years DO NOT power it on unless you can do so using a metered variac or dim bulb tester...Otherwise you risk causing damage to irreplaceable parts.
      *There are markets where supply and demand are comperable (rust belt/midwest), where demand exceeds supply (California/parts of the south), places where supply exceeds demand (Paciffic North West, parts of the east coast), places where there isn't much supply or demand (Montana, poorer regions of the south). In places where there isn't demand it can be hard to give away a TV for free, and in places like California where demand is insane and supply is limited sets too bland to attract interest everywhere else are commanding prices interesting sets would anywhere else, and interesting sets are obscenely priced.

      Some how I've gotten fewer bites off the metal cone tubes...I know not to touch them and doorknob caps seem to be less prone to dielectric bounce back after discharge.

      There'll only be 3 more episodes with footage from the Nikon...It suicided on me spectacularly.
      I gotta figure out a good cheap HD cam that works with a tripod soon. There's already a NTSC episode filmed because of this.

    You should trash that camera. Very bad low light performance. Even my spare phone, the nearly 5 year old Google Pixel 2 XL, produces a far better picture and that's quiet ancient for a smartphone.

    • @tomcarlson3913
      @tomcarlson3913  2 роки тому +4

      Well that Nikon camera trashed it's self since that was filmed, so now I'm down to my smartphone, and a 2003 SD camcorder...
      Most of the noise is actually my editing software changing the exposure, contrast, etc. To try and make a subject that looks normal to me (granted I have excellent night vision), and is almost completely hidden in shadows on the camera bright enough to see.
      Also I do my editing on a HD-CRT monitor and after the fact realize the corrections look worse on LCD displays.
      Your spare phone is only a just over a year older than my main Motorola phone (battery life always comes first in my phone choices)...I tend to look for reliable gear and stick with stuff that works as long as I can (keeping up with the jones' is too expensive for the almost non-existent amount of enjoyment it gives me).

      @@emmarandom9609 It's a digital 8 camcorder, but I didn't have any blanks on hand so the Admiral 20X12 video I filmed on it is mostly recorded on S-VHS (forgot to switch S mode on for the intro) from a pro-grade JVC deck I keep around.
      Coming from half Catholic, half Baptist up bringing the one thing my family is in complete agreement on is nobody likes 'Faaancis'.😄
