- "Englishman In New York" was released in 1987, from the album "Nothing Like the Sun". With Sting on the vocals, Branford Marsalis on soprano sax, and Manu Katche on percussion. A lot of people get confused around 1:55, and 2:31. For most of the song, Sting sticks with lots of Jazz, and mainly the saxophone. But for those two moments, he first switches to a sound that's close to Spanish. Then after more Jazz, he switches to a heavy drum solo at 2:31. A lot of people think it ruins the song, but it doesn't. He's demonstrating the difference in culture that he sees as an Englishman, in New York.
Lyrics:
I don't drink coffee I take tea my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I'm an Englishman in New York
See me walking down Fifth Avenue
A walking cane here at my side
I take it everywhere I walk
I'm an Englishman in New York
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
If, "Manners maketh man" as someone said
Then he's the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
Modesty, propriety can lead to notoriety
You could end up as the only one
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candle's brighter than the sun
Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run
If, "Manners maketh man" as someone said
Then he's the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York

klasse jazz ... (Y)
@ibanezmaster101 Haha no, this is THE best song from Sting. :D It just sounds so different. I love his voice, too.
@ibanezmaster101 No no no, definitely not a tie! I mean, the lyrics in Fragile are amazing. They beat the lyrics in this song, but the saxophone in this song, just beats everything. I can't stand the guitar part in Fragile. O_< It's so stereotypical! :P
@ibanezmaster101 Haha I'm not sure! I haven't had time lately... And plus, I'm trying to figure out what to sing. I'm thinking something by Ella Fitzgerald? I'm not sure...
@resetsyourmind1 I know... Jazz is just soothing in general. :-)
@metallica929 All day, err'day. *Every day I'm uploadin'*
@ibanezmaster101 Haha yeah, pretty old school. I LOVE Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, etc. Anything jazzy :D Haha now, whether I can pull it off or not- is a different story.
But I LOVE Frank Sinatra! And Nancy Sinatra as well. (Though, she didn't have too many GOOD hits, but her voice is still beautiful)
@ibanezmaster101 Oh I love that song! I almost thought about covering that song last night, since we had been talking about her. I picked Adele though. >_> Haha I should've done Nancy Sinatra!
Nice song , good memories Congrats Sting
good song though
You have to be cast in concrete and dying to get out to dislike this song.
I love this soprano sax!
My mom would always play this song when I was little. I love this song❤️
I was not aware that you engaged in illegal activities :P
