R.I.P ...Simon McKinley was (and I can’t believe I am writing about him in the past tense) a very special guy. Firstly for his driving talents obviously- there were days you honestly thought Simon could walk on water when you watched him drive. It didn’t really matter what he was in- the famous white Escort, his beloved and ever sideways Lant, his yellow Cinquecento, a kart, even a mudplugger- you always knew it was worth going to the fence for a looksee. Not only did this make him a multiple champion in his beloved discipline of hillclimbing but it ensured him eternal legendary status on youtube, with well over a million views on his various videos. Look beyond this though and Simon was special in other ways. I know people say this about anyone who passes, but he was extremely helpful to other competitors and almost as good with the spanners as he was with the steering wheel. Not only did he tend to his own car, he prepared and ran a car for his beloved wife Deirdre, buddy Dermot Nolan and many others too. He would happily miss one of his runs to help someone else out and that shows the measure of the man. (That, plus the fact it generally only took him one run to win the event!!) He also loved a good windup and I suppose many of these stories will be doing the rounds over the coming weeks. I can still hear him shouting at me the usual “Nulty? Where’s that Imp?!” My phone has been hopping all evening- some people asking if it is true, but most just wanting to talk about Simon- he was that type of guy…. To Deirdre and little Rory, to Margaret, Peter and all of his family, there simply are no words. To the hillclimb fraternity, probably the most closely knit discipline in Irish Motorsport, my sincerest sympathies in this tough time. As I type this, social media is buzzing, people can’t believe it and are clearly upset. Today is a very very sad day for Irish Motorsport- we have lost one of the very best. One thing is sure though, wherever Simon is now and whatever he is doing, you can be sure of one thing- throttle is wide open and the tail is out……

well put mate,i live in australia so i never got to see simon drive,however i do compete in hillclimbs,sprints etc and i know tha cameraderrie in competeting,its nice to hear that although simon was a top racer,he wasnt up himself [perhaps lewis hamilton could take some tips] i just wish i had half his talent,i could win everything!

I agree. Your spot on - This bloke can drive. Those knocking his skills are just hero’s in their own lunchtimes deluding themselves that they are half as good as this. RWD cars are driven a lot differently to todays AWD cars and this guy is milking it for all its worth. This driving is simply awesome and anyone that says any different is not watching the same clip or has issues.
There is a better version of this video somewhere else, I've seen it - without the stupid music that is playing during the video. The other version of this video also has POV from inside the car. Look it up - I've lost the link.

That's what I dislike about videos like that: the music is almost always unfitting. Would have been better if they did without the music and just left the ambient noise!
we know, but we got some problems with the sound, you heard the music from the event in the background and UA-cam blocked the video because of problems with the GEMA (German Music Industry). So we have to overlay the originall sound with other music. sorry for that!!!

An absolutely stunning car you get to have an insanely intimate and wild relationship with. I can't wait to have one and soup it up!! Many of em are cheap right now but they're still priceless.
The problem could not have been with the engine sound. It was obviously with the 2 seconds background music. So, remove it and just leave the engine sound and we will all be happy :-)
AS I SAID! The German Music Industry (GEMA) disallowed me to upload this Video WITHOUT Music. The engine sound of the car is copyright by german music industry. This is NOT true, but it was impossible to upload this video without any song overlaying the engine sound. it is not my fault!!!
Reminds me of a weekend drive with my step dad when i was a kid not as side ways but always around 80 through the country i loved it. He had afew old escorts one was rally spec rs2000 bright yellow red cage. The head rests had mesh in the i loved that car. I will always have love for old fords from mk1 escort to sapphire cosworths and all inbetween. I wouldn't say no to a focus rs tho $)
yes, it is equipped with the warrior 16V head from connaughtengines.co.uk, a special made head for absolute maximum power you can get out of the pinto engine. 150hp is also very nice to drive in a 8v Pinto. The maximum you can get is 230hp with the original 8 Valve head. But then you get over 9000rpm. My own pinto in a mk1 capri is turbocharged carb setup and made 200hp at 0,6Bar (9psi) Boost. Maximum 240hp at 1.0Bar (14psi) boost but only for a short time with race fuel 102 octane.
there is a big difference between "slide because you think its cool" or to slide because its faster in some cases. This Escort has the probably most powerfull 2l Pinto Engine with over 300 real HP. the setup of the car is perfectly balanced for the driver and you see how great he can trust his car. really not many drivers can perform like he is doing here in the video! Seems like it could use some aero for the high speed corners and a better suspension. Its like its been stiffened up to much so the wheels dont get traction on bumpy surfaces that is probably the reason for the bouncing too. It would be alot less work to drive, probably take a few hundredths off.
you may want to re check. it was called a De Dion tube its pretty much independent but its locked rigid with a "De Dion tube" its less sprung weight. i dont mean to argue with you if you know a lot about this type of racing and participate in it then lets hear whats working out there. but from what i understand in a perfect world with flat roads solid no movement up front and some movement in the rear is ideal, now all you need is down force. but this is a real road with bumps, it still implies
i just think this is a great conversation. but dont get me wrong i do understand IRS is better then a solid live axle, with todays technology you can make IRS better but its just way easier to set up a solid axle to work. the ideal solid axle set up i want to run is a 3 link with watt bar and push rod suspension. though iv not seen much difference between a watt bar and a panhard bar, the panhard being easier to set up. but all of that aside. what kind of racing do you enjoy?

yes, this is true. so in the description you can read "probably one of the best" - there are a lot of great race drivers out there, but this driving skills are awesome.
You're right, that there's nothing like it. Seems a solid 25fps to me, and the sort of acceleration you'd expect from 350ish hp/tonne and the sort of roadholding you'd expect from a sub-800kg car on very sticky tyres... being hooned about with 300hp going through the rear wheels

thats true, some low hp and well balanced cars are faster then a modern tourin one, cause they can cut through corners almost without braking ( here comes the slide )
He can drive, but nearly all race/rally drivers can drive a low-ish powered rear wheel drive car very fast indeed & these Escorts were very easy to slide.
It was really not my mention to add the music! But because of problems with german music industry youtube said, that the engine sound is copyright by a label (this is fuckin crazy and not true!!! nobody had the rights of engine sounds!!!) and I had to remove the video! This is sad but true! I added the gema-free music track and than it was okay!
Portuguese driver here (madeira island) did a whole rally with a escort mk1 with a sierra cosworth engine, so i think its even faster than that one. 800kg or so. dunno how it was allowed in the HRC though :|
I'm not a pro or anything, and I don't mean anything offensive towards Simon McKinley as he could out-drive me on his worst day, but I see lots of over-correction and powering around and thru corners with lots of wheel spin in this vid. It's cool he keeps the car on the tarmac, but isn't all this lost time? Drifting surely isn't an efficient way to get up a mountain. Formula cars and their drivers seem to be much more dedicated to preventing all this time-robbing energy loss. I guess I'm commenting because the video's title and description doesn't seem to meet my expectations. Chime in (nicely pls) if I'm way outta line here.
I think the deciding question is... the graphics say he was 4th and 5th in the Escort (...and 2nd in the single seater) - but who were his opponents, and what were they driving?

Seems like it could use some aero for the high speed corners and a better suspension. Its like its been stiffened up to much so the wheels dont get traction on bumpy surfaces that is probably the reason for the bouncing too. It would be alot less work to drive, probably take a few hundredths off.
you may want to re check. it was called a De Dion tube its pretty much independent but its locked rigid with a "De Dion tube" its less sprung weight. i dont mean to argue with you if you know a lot about this type of racing and participate in it then lets hear whats working out there. but from what i understand in a perfect world with flat roads solid no movement up front and some movement in the rear is ideal, now all you need is down force. but this is a real road with bumps, it still implies

i just think this is a great conversation. but dont get me wrong i do understand IRS is better then a solid live axle, with todays technology you can make IRS better but its just way easier to set up a solid axle to work. the ideal solid axle set up i want to run is a 3 link with watt bar and push rod suspension. though iv not seen much difference between a watt bar and a panhard bar, the panhard being easier to set up. but all of that aside. what kind of racing do you enjoy?

you to may want to re check. it was called a De Dion tube its pretty much independent but its locked rigid with a "De Dion tube" its less sprung weight. the car moves about the rear axle that stays put on the ground from the weight of the car up front not rolling as much. if f1 had it there way the front suspension would be locked solid rigid with no movement and just a little movement for the rear tires to grip and a lot of down force. this may be way over your head.

You're right, that there's nothing like it. Seems a solid 25fps to me, and the sort of acceleration you'd expect from 350ish hp/tonne and the sort of roadholding you'd expect from a sub-800kg car on very sticky tyres... being hooned about with 300hp going through the rear wheels

for all who not now why there is music: there was a problem with the engine sound or 2 seconds background music in the video (dont know exactly) and german music industry blocked this video (with only engine sound!!!) this was a stupid misfunction and so I had to add gema-free music - otherweise the video would be blocked. stupid but true!

thats true, some low hp and well balanced cars are faster then a modern tourin one, cause they can cut through corners almost without braking ( here comes the slide )

He can drive, but nearly all race/rally drivers can drive a low-ish powered rear wheel drive car very fast indeed & these Escorts were very easy to slide.

But because of problems with german music industry youtube said, that the engine sound is copyright by a label (this is fuckin crazy and not true!!! nobody had the rights of engine sounds!!!) and I had to remove the video! This is sad but true! I added the gema-free music track and than it was okay!
Portuguese driver here (madeira island) did a whole rally with a escort mk1 with a sierra cosworth engine, so i think its even faster than that one. 800kg or so. dunno how it was allowed in the HRC though :|
I'm not a pro or anything, and I don't mean anything offensive towards Simon McKinley as he could out-drive me on his worst day, but I see lots of over-correction and powering around and thru corners with lots of wheel spin in this vid. It's cool he keeps the car on the tarmac, but isn't all this lost time? Drifting surely isn't an efficient way to get up a mountain. Formula cars and their drivers seem to be much more dedicated to preventing all this time-robbing energy loss. I guess I'm commenting because the video's title and description doesn't seem to meet my expectations. Chime in (nicely pls) if I'm way outta line here.
I think the deciding question is... the graphics say he was 4th and 5th in the Escort (...and 2nd in the single seater) - but who were his opponents, and what were they driving?
