I was the same way with Opeth, wasn’t a huge fan in the beginning but they totally grew on me. Just recently checked out My Dying Bride’s catalog and they totally blew me away. Huge new fan of MDB.

Progressive Metal Bands: Because there are too many things going on here and there.
Black Metal Bands: Not because of the harsh vocals, I like extreme vocals like in Death Metal or even Deathcore. The thing that was hard for me to get into Black Metal was the music. It was hard to find the greatness of the music in Black Metal. I liked it but I didn't love it. Then more relistening and relistening, I started to enjoy Black Metal, I started to realize the greatness of it. I finally realized there are atmosphere and the feeling in Black Metal that is just different compare to other genres.
And now, Black Metal has become my number 1 favorite genre, followed by Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, and Thrash Metal.

A few bands for me would be
Dream Theater - Was recommended them back in 2016, which was when I first checked them out. Didn’t like what I was hearing at first, and maybe because I was listening to a song from The Astonishing (even though now there a few songs I do enjoy from that album), but I gave the band another chance in 2018, but with a different mindset, and my taste has also evolved a little bit since 2016, and then I ended up being a big fan of them.
Iron Maiden - I know, may seem blasphemous to say you dislike Iron Maiden, but around the time I started checking them out (again, 2016), I was not really into the classics in metal, so it made sense that I struggled getting into them. Then I want to say, a couple of months down the road, a gave them more chances, because I was dedicated in trying to get into them, so I dove into their discography more, and ended up being a fan, and the rest is history.
Korn - I’m sure it’s shocking for some that I was never into them during my early years being into metal or being one of my gateway bands, but they just… weren’t. That said, I didn’t bother checking out their music until 2019, when The Nothing came out, and just was not feeling it. For me, I felt not only it was a little too late for me to get into Korn, but they’d be one of those bands for me that would just come and go, and eventually lose interest. I was wrong though. I gave them another chance when their follow up album came out in 2022, and then a became a fan. Then the following year, I met Brian Head Welch, which is crazy!
    But yeah, good list!

Same here with Opeth. I was really into prog and death metal at the time but I only really liked a couple of songs. Then I heard Heritage and enjoyed it and then went back and listened to their back catalog and then they became one of my favorite bands of all time.

King Diamond/Mercyful Fate (vocals took a lot of getting used to)
Weakling (saw DaD on RYM as one of the top BM albums. Initially extremely disappointed. Love it now)
Cryptopsy (Still hate everything after 3rd album, but the first few are peak DM)

For me, with Manowar, I thought they were ridiculous and over the top with the first song I heard. For some reason, I felt the need to listen again 2 more times in a row, and by the 3rd time, they were still ridiculous and over the top but were one of my favourite bands. Which they remain to this day.

Opeth seems like the obvious choice as many of their songs contains no melodic hooks/chorus. First time i listened to Orchid and Blackwater Park it was like.... this is boring. It took roughly one year of repeated listening for those albums (and the rest of discography) to finally clicking with me. Another example would be Neurosis as one of those "Boring at first time, amazing after repeated listens" band.
One example on heavier band was Cryptopsy. By the time i first listened to Crown of Horns in around 2015, I was already familiar with some old-school death metal and some newer death metal bands. My first thought was " This is just some incoherent gurgling underlined with uncontrolled blast beats". After just one song i put the whole album away and didn't touch it for several months. After i gave the album 2nd, 3rd, 4th tries i was finally able to fully appreciate it, and None so Vile is one my fav metal album now.

Saxon. I always used to prefer Iron Maiden. But over time, I started to prefer Saxon. Now I love them! Another one is Metal Church. At first I wrote them off as generic thrash. Now I think they have some of the best riffs in thrash.

A big metal fan for years.
10 years ago I wouldn't have given black metal and melodic death metal a chance.
Got bored with Maiden etc Not Priest though so explored both genres.
Fell in love immediately, so with help of YT channels building up a big collection of stuff don't care if bands aren't around anymore some amazing music yeah.
    Love Opeth btw.
Problem is I get so angry when people say the music is ok but then they sing wtf.

I honestly still cant get into Mayhem. They just don't do it for me. I went like.... Burzum, Xasthur, shining, DSBM. Mayhem kinda just annoys and bores me. Turns out a lot of people agree. ALWAYS respect the legacy and appreciate what they did, of course. But musically... idunno man. I only like a few Mayhem tunes

Opeth - innocent 11-year-old me was obsessed with Dream Theater (who clicked instantly) and wanted similar artists, but I wasn't really into metal and hated screaming; Opeth didn't click. I really got into metal at 13 and screaming clicked at 15, that's when Opeth finally clicked.
Emperor - I checked out Empty, my first black metal song. It was so horrible that I had to listen to it again...and again...and again until finally, it started to click. So I checked out Prometheus which is not a good starting point, it was also hard to get into, but it eventually clicked too.
Leprous - I listened to a few tracks and the only one that clicked was Castaway Angels, I thought they only did progressive rock/pop. I later heard Haken's The Architect, which featured Einar, and I didn't realize he could scream. That's when I discovered Leprous was actually a prog metal band that featured screaming and wrote fairly heavy stuff, which was when they finally started to click with me. I even like the poppier stuff now, but those first three albums are amazing.

      @TheRealJoeNathan 3 дні тому +1

@@i_want_my_shuggah I'm confused by your response. Screaming is a valid term for metal, I've never heard anyone say otherwise. Metal vocalists utilize fry chord screams (like Ihsahn); and/or false chord screams AKA growls (like Mikael Akerfeldt); they are literally screams by definition, so I don't understand what you're getting at.

    For me it was:
    1. Destruction - Their Vocals in their early albums sounds like a Powerpuff Girls Villain and made me thought that it sounds goofy but Release From Agony proved me that the vocals were actually unique and no other vocals could've worked on that album.
    2. Cathedral - Same with Destruction I did not like Lee Dorian's vocals but after replaying Forest of Equilibrium and The Ethreal Mirror i started getting into them.
    3. Running Wild - I always thought they're just a Venom clone with Foxy The Pirate vocals but after replaying Under Jolly Roger it amazed me.

The year 1996...Cradle of Filth Dusk and Her Embrace. I was introduced into metal via Alice Cooper, Hair Metal, iron Maiden and KISS by my cousin. Then I heard some Norwegian BM and loved it.... But I was not ready for CoF. Read the reviews for that album and thought sounds interesting went and bought it. Bombastic instrumental intro the riffs then Dani came in and I hated it really did. I struggled to listen to that album even my brother who was into heavier stuff said "there is no way you paring this one on me". But the art and images I liked, so I decided to give it another go about a few weeks later, reading the lyrics and something clicked and I got it. After that CoF was my favourite band lol. Dusk and Her Embrace is still my number 1 album followed by Cruelty.

On the same page regarding Black Sabbath though I never got into the Ozzy era, for me it's about 1 good album worth of material out of his 9 albums.
Everything after that, Dio, Gillain, Hughes, Martin, all incredible despite the numerous lineup changes, shows for me at least how held back they were with Ozzy.
For me the one band I could never get into was Anthrax, I discovered them during the John Bush era and oof, not a fan. Then Worship Music came around and hearing Belladonna lit a fire in me and now I appreciate all of it.

There is now justice in the world.
Opeth I avoid due to the song lengths.
Only tried Watershed as of yet.
I like the dude's cleans, the growls...definitely existed, although they didnt take much of anything away from the music.
I'm okay with not getting into them,I see nothing they have impossible to find in other bands.
Shining,I only tried one song wayyy back, when I wasnt even into BM yet.
I found the song i listened to decent, gotta give em another chance.
On Sigh,I did see it as very odd and wacky.
And loved it from the start.
Even moreso now that I have properly dug into their material.
First time I checked out Sabbath - tunes off the first 2,it sounded antiquated...too old and primitive for me.
Fast forward to several months ago,I began likin em more and more.
Still prefer Lord Dio and Tony over Ozzy, who I certainly dig.
In similar fashion to Shining,Manowar was a band I briefly checked out.
I dug the song I listened to.
