Chris, mahalo for all of the tips and motivation to keep my head above the fray! I resell part-time, work full time, all the while following up and monitoring my latest cancer treatment. My wife, who is also my caregiver and all-in partner with the reselling, is the biggest blessing in my life. Reselling and everything involved takes up my free time, which suits me fine because it diverts my mind from work and medical appointments. I enjoy the process, not to mention the profits, which is what started my journey, to help pay off medical expenses. I love watching vids of picking, which helps me hone my skills, and I also enjoy watching vids of 6 figure resellers who are part of your groups. I try to glean as much as possible from the high volume sellers, and tailor my business to fit my needs and capabilities. If healthcare benefits were not a major issue with me, I would definitely try my hand at full-time reselling, scale up so to speak. For now, I’m happy where I’m at, and keep evolving into a better part-time reseller. Aloha! 🤙🏽

I was heavily involved in reselling in 2014/2015. Around that time I was knowingly going to lose my job in tech And I was really burned out on It all. I wanted to be working for myself and part time job to make ends meet.
Now it's 2023 and I've had this tech job since 2015. I was a contractor from 2015 to 2016 And then the company offered me a full time role and moved me across the country. It's not motivating to sell stuff when you make 6 figures.
I am very grateful for the opportunities that they've afforded me, But lately really hating my job and wanting to get back to being an entrepreneur. I've experimented with Food delivery, and i've started to put time back to ebay with my room full of junk I've had since back then.
All of this to say that I really enjoy your spirit, your helpful attitude, and your knowledge sharing. Not everyone is willing to share this knowledge. , and this people like you who continue to inspire ordinary folks that there is a different way for a frustrated hard worker who is running into roadblock after roadblock in their job.

10:40 its taking me 7-12 minutes to wake up in the morning and get out of bed. I don't think I've ever considered how long that takes. There is a guy at work that buys stuff on sale at walmart from time to time and then resells on ebay. He makes side money in the 1k to 3k per month range. Examples are rare hot wheels, computer games, collectable items like Poki-man card stuff, and other electronic items that never gets opened and stays in the package as new. I don't personally see the value as it all looks like useless junk that I would throw away. He sells it, and people buy it. He even told me that he's using a 10k line of credit now to buy stuff. It's not something I would do myself (because I just don't give a shit LOL) but I always ask him how it's going and he likes it.

These are a lot of great points. As someone who buys a lot of stuff on eBay, I have noticed that some people sell stuff (like specialized electronics) when they have absolutely no idea what they are selling.
There are certain items that are totally impossible to test or even know what the features are, unless you are familiar with the item, are able to power it on and go into certain diagnostic menus etc.
An extreme example would be avionics; if you aren't familiar with it (or are not able to consult with someone who is), you shouldn't be selling it.
All that being said I've had great experiences with eBay, I am pretty careful about who I buy from and stay far away from sellers who cannot provide basic information about what they are selling.

Well. I don't know about this, unless you have a source or sources where you can get that one type of item. I mean look at some of the most successful businesses like most large department stores, they make tons of money selling different things. I do understand and agree that with selling similar things you will have a much easier time listing and you can better develop a repeat customer base, than selling different things, but again, you have to develop the sources for that. Many are apparently doing very well selling multiple items. You don't have to be fancy, just be a better picker and pick items that are in demand, that is more important than quantity. Things that are in demand sell period.

The goal is to find an endless stream of highly profitable similar goods that are easy to list. That's why it's so hard to do. One time at an afterwork beer garden event, a friend pointed out to me that after 20 years in the same field of work, others view us as the experts. Mind blown! Did we ever have the greatest laugh.

So our store sales mainly clothes and does decent (8 sales a day). So if I try to periodically sell my son's baseball bats or other gear that has 100% sell through in my ebay store it will hurt my other items traffic?
Is it possible to set up a seperate store with same address for these off niche items ?

Sales is all about ripping people off. That’s just the way the game is played.

what do you do with stuff that doesn't sell? do you keep relisting it until it does? Is there any place you donate your goods if they don't sell? I have been selling on and off since 2001. I am trying to clean out my mom's house and selling some old things. I have been going to thrift stores since December, but I don't have enough room to keep buying. I have to realign and take a step back for sure. This was helpful.

Something I learn practicing martial arts: In Bruce Lee's words: “The art of Jeet Kune Do is simply to simplify. Jeet Kune Do avoids the superficial, penetrates the complex, goes to the heart of the problem and pinpoints the key factors. Jeet Kune Do does not beat around the bush. It does not take winding detours.

Question. I have a bunch of miscellaneous vintage items that belonged to my grandparents so I've decided to make an ebay store. Will my wide variety of items for sale hurt the amount of eyeballs my store gets? Sorry if this is a very beginner question, but...well, im a beginner! Thanks!

I’m mostly men’s clothing, but my problem is finding enough quality items so I sell other items to fill in the gaps.

I don't see self employment as freedom to do what I want. Yes no boss and that's great. But selling $ comes from selling what people want with the most profit. The Big Night is a movie from 1996, 2 brothers open an Italian restaurant. One insists on following his heart. The other doesn't care. He wants to make money. I've seen this with so many people. Work isn't a hobby. Every day I try to learn something new by watching these videos. One small thing is like finding treasure and it reminds me there's always more to learn.

Hey Chris, you probably won’t read this, but please try. I think your content aligns perfectly with the Financial Independence/FIRE community. Most of us that have been reselling for a bit generate income in excess of our monthly expenses. Once we have the proper cash reserves (emergency fund/operating expenses), we need to make decisions with this money. A number of people incur lifestyle inflation. I feel like this defeats the purpose of what we do. Learning how to live modestly and putting that extra money to work is crucial (most in the FIRE community suggest index funds). With this in mind, it would be amazing if you could get a prominent member of that community on the podcast (or go on one of their podcasts). Mr. Money Mustache, Paula Pant, Choose FI, The Financial Independence Show, are all great resources. Thanks for your time!
