    Hi Aaron. I’ve just subscribed and will make my wife the SUP for her 50th. We used to live at Macs and Kilcare so your videos are a walk down memory lane. I love your yacht and can’t wait to keep track. I think the new hatch can wait, just get sailing. Cheers

    Thanks Aaron I think the hawse pipe is back there so the weight of the chain is closer to the centre of the boat instead of up in the bow

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  4 роки тому

      Thanks Al, I think you’re onto something there. I might experiment with the chain position under sail to see if there’s any noticeable change if it’s right up against the stem.

  • @scharftalicous

    new repair... preserve and then destroy as much as looks even the mildest bit smelly as it makes it easier to rebuild. Interesting comment on the hawsepiper, if the boat was 40ft or longer I'd immediately agree but i think that might be a good match for the boat given where it puts the chain when stowed and how the front deck tends to opperate.

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  3 роки тому

      I’d say your right about the position of the hawse pipe. It also makes it easier to reach the chain from below to flake it out for next anchor drop.

    Hey aaron, great video brother. I have a bigger boat that I live on and you have reminded me of some really simple systems. With the companion way hatch, it looks dry, sand it back, everdure it, bog it and paint it. It's a nicely setup boat.
    Cant wait to see her sailing. Keep on sanding, grinding, painting and repairing, she will love you for it.

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  4 роки тому +2

      Cheers Paul. I think you’re right about the hatch mate, I want the boat to look good but at the end of the day the idea is to hold a tiller not a tool bag. What boat are you living on?

  • @phillipobrien7365
    @phillipobrien7365 3 роки тому +1

    Hey Aaron, Looks like they may have used normal polyester resin when they fiberglassed the deck. This has a wax in the resin, as it needs to harden without air. If so it needs to be sanded so that any paint will stick. Also, apparently compared to epoxy resins, polyester does not adhere to timber as well, so that may be why areas have delaminated.

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  3 роки тому

      I used Surfset Flex epoxy (polyester resin) which is perfect

    • @joek5161
      @joek5161 3 роки тому +1

      @@Aaron.deRuiter bit of a difference between the old school resins and the new 2 part epoxies. The old school stuff was basically a single part resin which would be mixed with a solvent to thin it (little more complicated then that). It is where the term "hot coat" comes from. As Phillip mentions, they added wax in the resin which would float on top of the resin/solvent mix and provide a protective coating while it cured. Unfortunately, it also provides a surface which will not hold paint (or epoxy or much of anything else...). To paint it, you will need to use a solvent to strip the wax off or use a paint which is equally hot and capable of causing the wax to float off (which at the time that the old school polyester was used...was almost all paints).
      You see these problems a lot with repairing old cars, boats and the like. When they try to repaint with modern "green" paints - the water based paints will look OK for a bit, but they will inevitably start to flake and peel off. Even epoxy resins will not stick to it reliably.

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  3 роки тому

      Thanks Joe, there’s a high chance the deck is coated with polyester resin. Thanks for the heads up.

      @@Aaron.deRuiter Thank you Sir. Mine has come from a Space sailer 27 (with a Sole Mitsubishi diesel) and has an issue selecting throttle in neutral position. Have found stamping on baseplate "OMC STD MERC" but no luck sourcing info on internet. I may have found the solution in a bent tongue on the plate behind the spring mechanism, but will re assemble and test. Thank you again. Good progress on your refurb. Well done
