- By July, the grass in the goat pasture is knee high, and the herd has carved neat paths through it by walking single file on the same thin lines of dirt. Sometimes, to make it pleasant for visitors and as a meditation, I mow over the goats’ favorite paths, widening the maze through the field.
Starting any new path in life can feel intimidating. The tall grass of the unknown is scary. But the more times we repeat the habits that matter to us, the more simple it becomes to find our way until new ways of reacting to and moving in the world become automatic and easy. Not sure of the way forward? Follow the footsteps of others you admire who share similar goals, let them help mark the way forward.

Is food somehow involved in this? Such happy looking animals.
We are a dairy farm so we make all kinds of products from their milk. No meat goats here. The goats are fed well, unlimited second cut hay, grain and minerals.

They seem to grow so fast, and some of the older kids are looking healthy chubby. Amelia looks so wide, like she still has babies in there. Maybe I'm mixing up the mamas.

How do we know that the mothers do not suffer in any way when the babies are taken from them?
Some are sad for a day or two for sure. Those days break my heart. Then they return to napping with their other family in the herd.
@@SunflowerFarmCreamery In the "wild" (not exactly an appropriate term, I know, because the Creator gives goats to us as a domesticated species) but if the babies were not taken from them, would the mothers eventually "abandon" them? After weaning, what could the mothers do for them?
Maybe they would live as family like cows and pigs?
And what is happening with the babies where they go?

@@pfannizub some of the babies every year do stay here with their herd. But the rest go to family farms to live as pets, or sometimes to other dairies. They aren't sold for meat or to be lab test subjects or anything bad like that
