Excellent format! The combined use of combat footage and tacview (and your calm voice) makes this really interesting. Also I find good that you didn't go for a single, protracted, 1v1 as people often do (and I did myself way back when). Those engagements reflect more what is to be found online! I reckon you'll now be flooded with tracks and requests, though. Good job!
Thanks KuntaQuinte, I like seeing things this way too. It helps by taking individual chunks from a fight and looking at them while they're still fresh in the mind after seeing it happen. This is something similar to how real fighter pilots debrief as they watch the HUD tape then go to the blackboard to talk about it/examine it in more detail. I'm hoping people do send some tracks/tacview files my way for this format as I think it would be interesting for the community to see varied styles of flying. You will see a protracted 1 v 1 fight in a future Dogfighting Debrief for sure ;-)
I've been watching these for years - often multiple times, sometimes years apart - and I've yet to see a video on here that's not jam packed with technical information and useful examples, all presented in a way that makes TACTL one of the very best channels on You Tube. I just can't speak highly enough about it. Even all these years later.
That was seriously awesome. Thank you for sharing your skills. TacView seems to have been updated since I saw it last in IL2. Looking good and a really useful mix of in-flight and TacView views.
No worries, you'll see the good but also the bad from me though, so as a whole this won't quite be about sharing skills as such LOL If I or anyone's submissions have a sortie/dogfight that happens to have good learning points you should see it here. You get to learn more from your losses more than the wins sometimes because the wins hide your mistakes :-)
When I look at these tracks my goal is to be as objective as possible...As part of evaluating and learning from it you've got to accept the good with the bad, no matter what it looks like because the evidence doesn't lie :-) I'm quite happy to point out whenever I screw up LOL
Hi I have been enjoying many of you Clips , and have watched lots of your" how to flys"i have BOS on my Pc and struggle to even land most of the time ,let along go on line and try to fight , however I find this sort of Debrief insight extremely useful . keep up the good work. Also your narration is very clear and concise and therefore for an old and slow guy is simply to follow and understand . Keep up the good work. Best wishes
Thanks for the feedback and being a long term watcher Leigh! I'll continue doing my best to keep things clear and concise :-) If you ever have any questions about an aspect in a video you can always ask me and I'll do my best to answer.
I can tell you one thing, Req describes things so clearly, I go into combat way more confident than I should for at least 12 hours after watching. It’s a temporary debuff that turns into a long lasting buff though, so, worth it.
@@JustPlaneStupid69 Confidence is half the battle! If you're confident you get to think clearer...at least that's what I'm thinking until bullets start clinking against my airplane :-)
The Air Combat Tutorial Library lmao see that’s exactly what I’m on about. I keep thinking, “Cool, I got this, I’m plenty prepared with altitude to spare, let’s CAP this obje- aaaaaaand Fritz just bird shat my canopy with my own brains, word up”
Sometimes it works....other times you get blasted and die. I need to fly a lot more MP so I can create more of these debriefs, but my sim flight time has been in short supply recently!
Cheers Cavalier, I have a few more planned so if people like these I'll continue to make them. They're a nice diversion and are easier to make as it's just me blabbing on for a bit...plus I get to fly multiplayer too to create them! I don't get to fly in MP as often as I want.
I just got my new TrackIR and am looking forward to getting back into the game! This is awesome, thanks for your work here I really appreciate what you have done here. I have never seen this tacview and it really is amazing.
Yep, back for the basics. Again lol I just want to take a second to appreciate the game warthunder and how it's simulator battles game mode does a great job of emulating games like IL2 on the console marketplace. I have trouble getting my controls nearly this fluent, but the visuals do not disappoint. Minus the tacview of course....
Very interesting to watch, enjoying these! If you aspire to continue this format (please do), have a look at the videos from Growling Sidewinder. He does an excellent job of combining in game missions videos in in DCS with his thoughts/analysis in a Tacview debriefing.
*Loved your work!* Can you please teach us the next generation combat tactics like the ones of the faster MIG21 vs The slower with small turn radius A4 Skyhawk? Will we really good work Again *Appreciate your hard work* *subscribed*
Love these vids very helpful and informative! Could you do a video on how you should fly in combat areas as a pair? Or maybe for the whole flight so takeoff, then enroute to combat zone, then egress and landing?
Tactics evolved. Initially in WWI and early on in WWII flying close like that in combat was common, but then it moved more towards what we see today with more separation from each other.
Great video, which I have watched many times, but still dont fully understand why you did the snap roll (to inverted) in the 1st engagement. Maybe I havent understood the relative angles and closure between you and the K4 properly, or maybe I am just being thick, but is there any chance you could explain? Thanks
It was just taking advantage of the excess speed the K-4 brought with it coming downhill as he wouldn't be able to pull enough to shoot. That snap slows me down a bit and allows me begin a gravity assisted pull in his direction, then as he passes by I roll to keep the lift vector pointed at him.
Agree with most comments here. All I can add is that I’d like to know if there’s any resource or instructional vid for efficient comms protocol; you said “tally one right one o’clock”, being English this makes sense, I wonder if you could expand on terms and discipline used in comms. Great vids as always
That’s fantastic. Can I also say your commitment to answering comments, including your older vids, is most impressive. Your channel is my #1 resource for Il2 and always my first recommendation for people with questions. Thanks as always!
Thanks Meriwether, I really appreciate it. If people are willing to take the time to comment/ask a question then I'll always do my best to answer. It's only fair :-)
Is there any chance you can review/give some feedback on a few rolling scissor maneuvers? It's not the format you mentioned, just a raw video file of gameplay.
The first 109 did a great job overall. The only thing I would have done different is using less power in the dive to prevent him accelerating as fast for that attack against me. If he wasn't flying as fast (and if I didn't notice it) then my little flick to inverted would have resulted with a cannon round to the face as he would have been able to have a smaller turn radius and pull lead for a shot.
"Immelmann"??!! you mean "Half Loop & Roll"...... An "Immelmann Turn" is where a plane climbs at an approximately 45 degree angle, maintaining full throttle, until the airspeed drops to stalling, then using the prop wash over the tail, uses the rudder to turn 180 degrees and reverse course back down the same way they climbed. To a pursuing aircraft the victim appears to make 180 hand brake turn and goes head on with them. Also a common aerobatic performed by stunt planes at air shows. Favoured by ground attack aircraft to hit the same target from both sides. If a ground attack aircraft performs a left hand Immelmann Turn followed by a right hand Immelmann Turn over a ground target, this is called a "Cuban Eight". This double Immelmann Turn manoeuvre was devised by P-47 pilots during WW2.
This is an excellent video, superb flying, teamwork and decision making and the commentary and tac view are very informative. I wondered though whether you should have stuck together to attack the same target though. I understood why you criticised the close enemy formation but I feel like flying close together can have advantages though not quite in that shape. Would love to see more videos and commentary on teamwork. There are some historical videos on ww2 and also this one ua-cam.com/video/LPYSa1Sw-oo/v-deo.html
Thanks Richard :-) My wingman thought he saw something so we got separated for a little bit. Attacking the same target is fine if the situation is good for it of course. As for that enemy formation, flying close is fine...but that was essentially close formation flight which really dampens their effectiveness. If they were to spread out even just an extra 1000ft they would have had more flexibility and likely seen us coming in for that attack.

Why modern jet fighters fly in pairing formation. Is there a change in paradigm switching from a slower plane?

how do you perform the maneuver you did to cause overshoot

Basically getting close to the stall and letting the plane snap roll then halting it by 180°
