Wait a minute, a port of a Wii game from 2010 that has inferior qualities!?!?!? This is giving me Sonic Colors Ultimate flashbacks. And that saddens me because I LOVE Sonic Colors.
I bought it because I didn't play it back when it released. As someone who grew up with and loves the original trilogy, beat DK64, and also loves Tropical Freeze, I had to finally play Returns. My verdict? It's a great game, and I had a great time. The music really triggered my DKC1 nostalgia. However, charging these prices for ports with an HD upscale is ridiculous.
I'll save you 20 minutes - Full retail ($60) - Adds nothing new from the 3ds - Does the bare minimum in terms of implementing 'HD' graphics and somehow has worse performance (frame rate drops that weren't in the original) than the wii - Doesn't even credit the original developers - Still the same fantastic game - But not recommendable for anyone who already owns the 3ds or Original wii version.
Nintendo’s remakes/rereleases have been a waste of money for a while. Luigi’s mansion 2 was disgraceful. HAL did a good job on the Kirby Return remake, even if the mini games weren’t my thing, but that’s a low bar to pass. Nintendos doing too good that they aren’t trying as hard anymore. Hopefully the performance issues can be rectified on the Switch 2 but any Wii game playing worse on Switch for $60 with nothing added is wild. They could have added a King Kool mode or something like the Mario 3D Land remake (which was the only good port I’ve seen so far from Nintendo). Idk what this company is doing. I was hoping the flop of the WiiU would motivate them to try harder. Seems like they hit success and are lacking.
@Rzs31 Yes, I do. The new water looks flat and dull, and lacks the luminous glow of the original, which I think made it look so good. The waves also look like 2D textures, and I don't think the new reflective surface texture fits the aesthetic of the game.
@ lmfao you can see the comparison videos on UA-cam. You’re talking out of your rear. First you say flat and dull then you say reflective texture…can’t be both. The water has more texture to it and does not look flat or dull….stormy shore original version is flat and dull.
I was so hyped to see some news of a new DK related game, but so disappointed to see it was just a port. As usual they sell the same game from back then for $60 when I can just turn on my Wii and play the original there or get an emulator. I really hope DK gets a new Country game with the Kremlins soon. It’s unlikely since Nintendo only cares about Mario, Zelda, and Kirby, but one can only hope.
At 60 euro i want a new chapter not a remaster of a game i paid 20 euros sealed new on 3ds years ago... The right price was 30 euro max 35...at 60 they should sell the bundle dkcr + dktf
If the game cannot run 60 on the switch, 100% this is just emulated with some slight changes. Also explains why the game doesn't have fur changes in other areas.
I Hate how one of the ways they market basically every port of Wii for the Switch is to enphatize the fact that you won't need to use motion controls anymore, like those made the game unplayable, wich it didn't. Pressing a button is better for most people, but differently from some cases like Skyward Sword, the motion controls in DK country returns were completly fine, and making it sound like they were a terrible thing is just a cheesy way of incentivising people to buy your 15 year old 60 dollar laggy remaster. Screw tou Nintendo! If I want to play this game ever again, I' emulating it. Greay video BTW!!!
@@kannodePVC Thanks! I agree with you. Playing Skyward Sword with buttons is just weird. I have a funny story: someone I knew long ago blamed motion controls for them failing at the rocket barrel stages. Of course, those stages don't even have motion controls...

And I thought how much worse can it get than Mario RPG or Luigi's Mansion 2 remaster? This one broke the record. Makes you wonder wtf would nintendo ever give one of their games in the hands of an outsourced inexperienced studio with a terrible track record like Forever Ent? all that hardwork. all that focus. all that money. all that years. not even a new epic DK Game was made. from 2018 to 2024? that's it?! why is nintendo focusing on bigger IPs? where's the fun? like seriously they have new mechanics on 2025 and yet they won't do much on other IPs like starfox or even make their own fun inspired 64 adventure? splatoon is iconic yes but i'm more into adventures and boss battles. not turf war 24/7. geez. sega team makes a lot of effort at least. and fans can also help sonic fans as well!
Last thing, i know it sucks to not have a new DKC game, trust me bro I beat DKC2 with inverted controls I wish we had a new game but at the end of the day can we give forever entertainment a break.
Hard pass. I still have a working 3ds and a copy… If they had just added funky mode here as in tropical freeze on switch that would have made it a little more interesting
I've seen this complaint for a while, but the slower frame rate may have to do with the engine DKC Returns HD is running on. The Switch's hardware isn't all that powerful, and from what I've heard, the game is running on the Unity Engine, which would explain the frame rates dropping or any other technical issues. Other than that, I'm waiting for the switch two to even get this game. Let's hope Nintendo hears our cries and patches the game up (Although, that may be just me huffing on copium)
It's alright that they put this on switch, but full price is completely unaccaptable and it should have been done before the in every aspect superior sequel. Though Mario vs DK was worse in my opinion, also Full Price and they didn't even do a collection of maybe the first 3 titles in the series but sure, it did have blander graphics than the original. Nintendo really could have taken the high road after Sony practically apologized about raising prices for their games but they just shown to be as arrogant and greedy as almost the rest of the industry.
Just emulate the original it loads faster, has HD texture pack support, and doesn't have the missing graphics and frame drops the switch port does. Honestly I'd say tropical freeze is still worth the full price if you haven't played it yet.
@pressstart610 , I don't have a PC to emulate. And yes, I love Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze; I played it on the Wii U. I am one of the few that owned a Wii U, and played masterpieces like that one, Super Mario 3D World, Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Too bad we can't be sure that even good games from the past work well on new consoles. I don't have my Wii anymore, so tend to get ports if they come out. I also have the 3DS version and I recently bought a new battery for my 3DS (the old one couldn't hold a charge anymore) and the 3DS is more portable than the switch so I guess I'll just play that version again if I want to play this game. Other rereleases are awesome, like Metroid Prime, Kirbys return to dreamland and PM2. But they are lazy with 3DS ports? Like this and LM2. I would love to get Yoshis Wooly World on Switch since I never had a WiiU and I can't play the 3DS version on the TV but if this is how it would turn out then maybe it's better if it won't release.

@@jonmccown2323 I don't think everyone hates motion controls but they should have a purpose. A great example for amazing use of motion controls is Zack and Wiki and of course diverse Wario Wares
The problem with motion controls on the Wii was that every developer and their mother had to use it in some way in almost every game. Some games used it great (Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, CoD, etc.) but most of the time it was just something devs threw into their games because "it's the Wii we have to have motion controls". Which at worst made for a lot of bad games/bad motion controls and at best fun to use when it wasn't obtrusive and worked like it should.
Or maybe the new game is being saved for switch 2 which would make more sense. Besides they need filler games because of the new switch lol common sense for a port

Wait a minute, a port of a Wii game from 2010 that has inferior qualities!?!?!?
This is giving me Sonic Colors Ultimate flashbacks. And that saddens me because I LOVE Sonic Colors.
The Wii version was my first Donkey Kong game and I loved it 😎👍
Who asked for this? This game is so boring...Also heard of the credits controversy...That is so cold...
You:who asked for this? This game is so boring.
Me:Jistintendo asked for this, he likes the HD game, in case you don’t know he’s a Nintendo UA-camr
Kirby's Return To Dreamland Deluxe.
Do I need to say more to make this remastered look bad?
@elimBaz it was much better, but Prime Remastered is the best example
I bought it because I didn't play it back when it released. As someone who grew up with and loves the original trilogy, beat DK64, and also loves Tropical Freeze, I had to finally play Returns. My verdict? It's a great game, and I had a great time. The music really triggered my DKC1 nostalgia. However, charging these prices for ports with an HD upscale is ridiculous.
I'll save you 20 minutes
- Full retail ($60)
- Adds nothing new from the 3ds
- Does the bare minimum in terms of implementing 'HD' graphics and somehow has worse performance (frame rate drops that weren't in the original) than the wii
- Doesn't even credit the original developers
- Still the same fantastic game
- But not recommendable for anyone who already owns the 3ds or Original wii version.
@@VGF80 People have low enough attention spans as it is. Why make it worse? Lol
@@NintendoUpDotCom I dunno, not everyone has the mental patience to endure negativity for more than 5 minutes. Not a big deal, hmpf
@VGF80 There's a huge section full of positives, and it's a review.
@NintendoUpDotCom Still, as a port. The negatives outweigh the positives. But let's just end it there.
You didn't even mention all of the missing graphical effects or the downgraded water and lava visuals.
Lol you think the water looked better on the original?
@Rzs31 Yes, I do. The new water looks flat and dull, and lacks the luminous glow of the original, which I think made it look so good. The waves also look like 2D textures, and I don't think the new reflective surface texture fits the aesthetic of the game.
@ lmfao you can see the comparison videos on UA-cam. You’re talking out of your rear. First you say flat and dull then you say reflective texture…can’t be both. The water has more texture to it and does not look flat or dull….stormy shore original version is flat and dull.
@Rzs31 Something can be both flat and reflective. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Anyway, I'm entitled to my opinion, as you are yours.
This should not be overpriced.
At 60 euro i want a new chapter not a remaster of a game i paid 20 euros sealed new on 3ds years ago... The right price was 30 euro max 35...at 60 they should sell the bundle dkcr + dktf
Please don't use a delayed RGB effect on the chapter name screens, it's hard on the eyes.
HD stands for Hardly Dedicated, because Forever Entertainment put the bare minimum in this port. And Nintendo is asking for $60+
I'll save my money on Xenoblade X DE, that game is already showing promise that DKCR HD dosen't even have.
Amazing video! Your becoming my new favorite UA-camr now! Just from this video alone. Subbed to you! keep it up man!
@@Enan63. Thanks! I'll keep going as long as I can.
Nintendo is getting lazy these days... But I bought Donkey Kong Country Returns HD as I never played original Nintendo Wii version
even the aliasing is terrible nevermind the constant framerate drops! The fur also looks off. This port is as low effort as it gets. And I thought how much worse can it get than Mario RPG or Luigi's Mansion 2 remaster? This one broke the record.
Makes you wonder wtf would nintendo ever give one of their games in the hands of an outsourced inexperienced studio with a terrible track record like Forever Ent? Tropical Freeze on switch is how you do a proper port! Also Unity was a terrible choice! Retro's inhouse engine is light years better.
Playing Returns with 4K texture mod in Dolphin on PC is the way to go! 🖕🖕 scumtendo
Yeah... they fucking fumbled with this port my dumbass still bought it though because I let nostalgia take over
Been playing Donkey Kong Country Returns on my Wii u and 3ds XL this week watching preview of switch port on UA-cam. I agree , Should have added some more levels .
Retro Studio wasn't in the credits of the HD version because Nintendo owns the property and by Crediting them Directly on the project they didn't Technically work on, you might be obligated to pay them.. now Nintendo did indirectly Thank them As soon as You beat the Game and i wonder if the same Staff is there who made the Original back in 2010
Indeed lazy, but look at Metal Gear Solid collection, Devil May Cry collection, Monster Hunter Stories & much more poor shitty ports from 3rd parties.
amazingly said
No way I'm spending 60 on this.
HD, what did you expect?
No.10 expand the lore of the tikitac tribe nintendo add new villains but never explained them in, sour bunch or reclusea
I feel like new super mario bros wii deserved a remake more than dk returns
So the composer for dk country returns is kenji Yamato, who is also notoriously known as a plagiarized 😅 his biggest case is his involvement in Dbz Budokai 1-3
Actually, they are two different people, with the same name.
@NintendoUpDotCom holyshit, you're right! I'm literally looking at two Wikis pages with the same name, but it's a different person!
monster games is owned by a sim racing company now.
sailed the seas for this port and I'm still unsatisfied 😂
all that hardwork. all that focus. all that money. all that years. not even a new epic DK Game was made. from 2018 to 2024? that's it?!
why is nintendo focusing on bigger IPs? where's the fun? like seriously they have new mechanics on 2025 and yet they won't do much on other IPs like starfox or even make their own fun inspired 64 adventure?
splatoon is iconic yes but i'm more into adventures and boss battles. not turf war 24/7. geez.
sega team makes a lot of effort at least. and fans can also help sonic fans as well!
Last thing, i know it sucks to not have a new DKC game, trust me bro I beat DKC2 with inverted controls I wish we had a new game but at the end of the day can we give forever entertainment a break.
I really dont know who's to blame for that shit, Nintendo or forever entertainment ? Or maybe both ?
it has slow loading and is 60U$ , yes it is a crash crab
Good review of a rant
Hard pass. I still have a working 3ds and a copy…
If they had just added funky mode here as in tropical freeze on switch that would have made it a little more interesting
Is it best for me to wait for Nintendo to put it on a discount sale? Like 30% to 33% off as they usually do?
Just emulate the original it loads faster, has HD texture pack support, and doesn't have the missing graphics and frame drops the switch port does. Honestly I'd say tropical freeze is still worth the full price if you haven't played it yet.
@pressstart610 , I don't have a PC to emulate. And yes, I love Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze; I played it on the Wii U. I am one of the few that owned a Wii U, and played masterpieces like that one, Super Mario 3D World, Xenoblade Chronicles X.
@@stripedrajang3571 It was my main console that generation lol there are a bunch of good games on Wii U for sure, glad most of them are on a console people actually bought now lol (still no Wind Waker HD tho for some reason)
I have yet to try The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker. I had a chance to play it when it debut on the GameCube, but life happened.
@@stripedrajang3571 Wait for a deep discount.
Good thing I waited with this game. I regret giving in to my nostalgia with Sonic Colours. I bought it without checking videos about it.
I hope they’re listening, but this is a dead horse at this point
Tbh DKRHD is a godsend compared to Luigi's Mansion 2 port
@@jp-toaster how? There's so many problems with dk. What issues are there with Luigi besides the price? The game runs and plays and looks good as far as a i know but also haven't played it yet
12:01 hard???? Lolll you’re just bad
Great game, average port but a great addition to the switch library
I 100% DKCRHD in Wii mode with no inventory
@@mightylion_gaming nice. I needed to record gameplay of all levels in a timely manner so I had to do modern mode.
I never cared for Returns or Tropical Freeze to me its not DKC without King K. Rool and the Kremlings also you forgot about DK64 aka the best DK game ever
I didn't forget, but it's not a Donkey Kong Country game.
@NintendoUpDotCom That's true but it still follows the same story type as DK64
@@RyoUrawa777 so you don’t like returns or tropical freeze just because they didn’t show King K, what??
@@daddydwaved I'm guessing English isn't your first language but yes it isn't DKC with K. Rool and the Kremlins to me
@@RyoUrawa777 I recommend you go watch Jistintendo review of the Tiki‘s and find out, see his perspective even if you disagree
How did the Wii even sell? Just the most EVER. But EVERYONE today HATES motion control? Moving your wrist to pound is not a problem. It's called modernism. It's always better NEW. I love my Wii and Wii U games. And enjoy switch ports too cause their good also. Stay safe, Positive, And game on.
Yes
Multiplayer sucks
Based.
Great video deserves more recognition
@Mas_Venezolano Thank you! The YT algorithm is a cruel b.
Great video!!
DONT buy it problem solved. 😂
Or maybe the new game is being saved for switch 2 which would make more sense. Besides they need filler games because of the new switch lol common sense for a port
Just like Tropical Freeze for Switch was a filler port...like 7-8 years ago.
Regardless, that doesn't excuse low-effort work or anything else mentioned in the 21-minute video.
It was done for the future of the switch two. If you are too cheap to buy the great game again, then don't. Simple!
