how to refurbish an old golf club 2020

- a golf was gifted a set of Hogan Apex irons and wood woods 1-3-4-5, Hw wanted them to look nice if he ever decided to play them. The lower irons as you can imagine were in rough shape but the rest were actually pretty decent. See what we did to make them better.

I had completely forgotten about those grips, wow you just took me back so many years to......when I had hair on top of my head rather than growing out of my.......... ears!
totally can relate.
..... Ears 😂😂

I have found a great trick on cleaning all types of grips and club heads. I use hand cleaner...Gojo or anything that has Pumice. Place a good amount in your hand or on a clean rag and scrub the grip back and forth and spin the club in your hand for a few minutes. Then run it under warm water and remove any residue using a scrub brush. Dry with a clean cloth or paper towel and BAM! Like new. Works REALLY well on old leather grips. You will be amazed at the crud it removes. I also clean the groves and club heads with this stuff and it works great! Put a little bit on the head/groves and use a scrub brush to clean them up. Rinse with warm water. Try it and see for yourself. BTW...I enjoy your videos.
That sounds like a great idea.. I might have to give it a go! 👍
My late father took his cherished Macgregor Jimmy Demaret blade/persimmons and "worked" on them. The persimmons are a mess. The face is not flat, the insert is protruding past the actual wood, and the grooves on the inserts are rounded. The irons look wonderful, despite old oversized grips. Took the irons out; those blades are small, but the ball still goes straight. Grooves on the short irons??? Not sure they do anything. Love those old clubs and your video on restoration.
Jim, these things look better than I possibly could have imagined! This was like a sneak peek for me because I obviously haven't been back to the shop yet to pick them up. Really looking forward to seeing them Saturday morning excellent work I couldn't be happier seeing the results here in the video! Absolutely a treat to see
on old Hogan clubs "5" shafts are the stiffest. most people ordered them with "4" shafts so if you see them for sale on ebay most old Apex clubs will have #4 shafts in them. #4 is stiff. #5 is extra-stiff.
I remember reading about Ben Hogan irons being pinned to eliminate the possibility of the heads flying off because of the poor adhesives used at the time. Had to be a really good ball striker to play those Apex irons.
These are my irons with a two iron and Apex 4 shafts. I’ve upgraded to modern, metals woods but my irons don’t look as nice as the ones you refurbished. Great job and really enjoyed this video. 🇨🇦💝👍
THAT WAS GREAT! Thank you so much for sharing your time and expertise, it's much appreciated.
Those old Apex shafts are pretty cool. Lighter, easier to flight, consistent. I heard Hogan had a policy that if you ever put his shafts in a non-Hogan head, that person would never sell Hogan clubs again. Also that Hogan even wrote a nasty letter to Langer after he won the Master's with Apex shafts in Wilson heads. Good stuff.
Wow! I’ve heard some Hogan stories, but never that one. Would that have been Langer’s win from 85 or 93??
@@bryanmccoy203 It was 93. You can Google around for more information. Way back I did see a copy of the letter sent to Hogan dealers. The letter to Langer was never replied to or acknowledged by Langer that I know of. He took the high road.
Just picked up a set of 1973 Apex irons, 2-9 with Eq and "Sure-Out" which I assume is a Sand wedge. They are in great shape and only need what you just showed in this video. Before I hit the links, I will give them a shine and clean the grips. Thanks so much for this video. It is very informative.
just bought new irons blended Titleist 620mb and cb. clubs so beautiful i will need to save this video for later!
I lusted over those clubs when I started playing.
I have that very set of ‘73 Hogan Apex 1-E wedge and they need some attention so thank u for the video!!!!!
I still have my lefty set of apex 2 I was given 20 years ago!
"Hit the snot out of this".......I nearly wet myself Jim.....keep em coming !!!!!!
back in 2001,.I played with a friend's set Apex,... ,.. all I can say is " like butter"
Great vid Jim, very interesting.
When you really caught one with those woods, you said you caught it right on the screws. Loved those clubs.
Jim, have you ever done a repairing or customizing paint fill video? I see some of the mix and match of colors on some of the enthusiast websites and wonder if I can do it at home? Keep up the interesting content.
yes you can do that at home, Sounds like a topic to cover.
Fantastic can you talk about refurbishing forged irions and is it done differently thank you great video
hogan is a forged club. THe process is the same. If there is a polish needed thats a bit different
I too have an old set of clubs of this era (late 70's- early 80's), Nicolaus Murfields 3-PW, D, 3w, 5w and they are in really good shape. They belonged to my grandfather and were given to me after he passed. I'd had them sitting in a corner for years, and finally pulled them out to look at them and research them recently. On 4 or 5 of the irons, the hosel has separated from the head about 1/2". What's the best way to reseat it? I'd sent an email via the website, but thought a few others might be interested in your comments here? Thanks Jim!
Heat the ferrule with a air dryer and slider it back to the hosel with a dab of superglue
I’ve got a full set of Ben Hogan’s 1-E. They aren’t new but they aren’t anywhere near worn out. I purchased them from a trucker that needed some cash. If anyone knows of someone in the market, I’d be happy to let them go.
What about modern driver heads? Just wash with dish soap and dry and buff? Thanks
15:55 what is this incredible sound track?? I need more of this in my life
I almost dropped out of my seat when I saw you pull out that club as I have been admiring my acquisition of same set, 1973 APEX 2-SW in similar condition! Mine all have the brown gold grips, matching serials on the ferrules...which brings me to this question. I have old musical instruments with serials that can be traced by factory records made public. Do any such records exist or is there a code to reading the numbers? Great channel btw. Keep up the good work.
You might get a hold of the New Hogan company they may be able to help you.
@mike, the Apex era clubs are as follows. A set of true 1973 Apex would have something like B35233. The first digit is for the month. B=February. The second is the year. In this case 3=1973. The next two are the first two digits of the model number for the club. In this case 52=5200 which was the Apex iron set for model year 1973. The next digit is the shaft flex. 3=regular. The last digit is swing weight. 3=D3. The clubs in this video are 1974-1978 based on the grips, ferrule trim rings and the shaft band graphics. Hogan introduced model years, not calendar years. The 1973 Apex clubs were available for order in September 1972. They were replaced early in mid 1973 by the 1974 model which is confusion for people because they see the "3" in the year slot but they often are 1974 models made in 1973.
@@johnwaynecarlson5391 Thanks so much, John. I knew someone out there had to have this knowledge. So, thank you for being out there and sharing, lol.
They look great! Nice job. Would like to see you pull a head that is pinned.
Thanks!
not on this set. lol
Love the Apex Mbs
Great video again Jim. Ballpark what you charge per iron to do what you just did to these irons?
Send an email to mcgolfshop@roadrunner.com so we know what you want
Jim the favourite club in my bag is one I can’t find any information on .. CH Memphis special 58 degree .. I’m assuming it’s from the 70’s and thought you might have some knowledge about this club as I need some advice on how to refurb the leading edge. I have photos of the club and it would be great to get some background on it !
1st comment coming from PA!!!
Keep up the great work!
NICE!
Love the video Jim. Can watch this stuff all day. I think I watched a video about Kevin Na’s caddy saying best way to clean irons is with a damp towel and the dry them. I commented that I’ve always used a soft toothbrush, with a little soapy water. I clean my irons after every round and they look like new. Some people said don’t use a brush but I’ve never scratched my irons. Can you recommend a proper way to clean clubs? Thank you
on irons you can use the tooth brush. Keep in mind where the pro plays and where we play. Typically not the same conditions. however the towel method works excellent on woods and hybrids and irons too, The tour towel we sell with the McGOlf logo is the towel the caddies use. Wet one side and use it to remove debris and the other to dry. Viola done

Sounds good, thanks for that.
I will check out your store. Will you ship Internationally (Taiwan)?
Great video really liked it, but that music will haunt me for months... :)
What is the best way to get multiple small rusty spots/ dots off of iron shafts?
Robert Yoakum a Brillo pad. A greenie if you want a bit less grit.
Hi. I have a set of first generation PXG’s that I would love to have refurbished.....what would be my next step. Thanks. Peter
have nice set hogan medallion irons..early 80's .............total refurb for club 9 irons ballpark price
depends on the condition honestly. email, mcgolfshop@roadrunner. com for a quote thanks
What would you use on a wrapped leather grip? Just a regular leather cleaner or something else?
if truly a leather wrap, I have heard folks using saddle soap. Honestly, a mild cleanser and a medium firm brush then dry off directly would do the trick. YOu dont want to rinse out the dye if used
Cool I bought the same original irons I used as a kid wanted to somewhat restore them. Spalding Johnny Palmer irons.
Hey Jim, Do you restore old McGregor Tourney Persimmon woods? I have a set of 4, but one is cracked. They belong to my father, and I plan on keeping them.
Great video, Thanks, Felix!
No, sorry but look up a guy named David Bass. He is in North Carolina I believe and has started that back again and does a great job
I got a guy giving away Free Clubs and wanted to know thanks man
This may seem like an extremely rookie question, but what are the signs to know if a club is chromed or high polish stainless steel?
You can alway do a magnet test on the face. Carbon steel is more magnetic than stainless
Lost me at 3:30 😥 my kid got some clubs a 7wood and a driver but man the driver face is all pitted and the grooves are almost gone
Have you ever used a polishing tumbler. Would you recommend?
only when trying to achieve the old callaway finish, It typically is the one that will hold the media and the clubs, its sound terrible of me to say that but if you have the time to do one at a time then the size can be much smaller.
What do you call that tool? Bench grinder is it? Also where would you buy the polishing compound perfect for golf clubs?
a double arbor motor at 1800 rpms, and the polish comes from Grizzley its the polish used on guitars,
@@McGolf thanks mate
It’s funny how the 6 or 9’s (idk which is which) had grass sticking out of it.
Awesome content. Are those clubs going to be used again or will they be display only?
Matt, I beleive a little of both. Maybe a round or two then on the wall.
Matt Jim is correct most of the time they will be protected and inside the house but occasionally a guy just has to take the old blades out for 9 holes at the Country Club LOL. I cannot wait to pick these things up on the weekend!
Found a set of 2021 Apex irons. They served as pro shop demos. Wondering if I get them if you could buff them up or if it’s just a waste of money since they are forged and will bang around in my bag and look just like they do now in a couple of months. 🤷🏼♂️
I could buff them but you are correct with individual dividers in the bag or headcovers they will get bag wear and look bumpy again over time
thanks a lot for your goof video
that is red Macgregor woods and Tommy Armour woods
I have this exact set with Apex 5 shafts, 1978 Apex Blades. Had to regrip with Taylormade bubblegrips to fit over that fat butt lol.
what stain color I should use to refinish vintage red Macgregors
I think a steam cleaner would work well for grips
Will a deburring wheel remove chrome finish? I have a set if Hogan Edge irons that I'm trying to refurbish. I've been hitting them with the black compound and it dies look better...but the deeper scratches aren't buffing out. If I apply light pressure will it take care of the deeper nicks but not remove the chrome
Jim, I have a set of Kenneth Smith clubs ('made in Kansas City') from my grandfather who probably bought the set in the 1960s. The woods need refinishing badly. They have sentimental value for me (and I do play with them when I'm visiting my grandkids in KC), but I've had a hard time finding someone to refinish them. I'm willing to try myself but it looks from your video like some special equipment - not to mention skill and artistry - is required. Can you help? I can send you my contact info if you can. Bill
search David bass, He is a clubmaker in North Carolina and does this as a passion. It would be best to contact him
What is that machine you're using?
You have mentioned before about the tool you use for an original Ping Anser reshaft. I would love to see how you get the “death ball” out.
that will have to wait for a reshaft and thanks
A few ways of getting the shaft out with the shaft/ ball bearing intact. Either freeze the head, then add a little heat and some wd-40 or hit the hosel with some oxy-gas really concentrate the heat but do it quickly. You don’t want the heat going into the shaft if you can help it. But you will have to retumble the head if you do it that way. I’ve done probably around 500 of those.
Hi Jim, do have any advice for repairing club faces ? Can I use the buff to even out some scratches? Thanks
I ma not a fan of regrooving only because it can ruin the grooves and make them illegal, you can sand the face scratches of or sand blast and make sure the courseness is not above legal requirements.
Can you use 00 steel wool on golf club shafts to clean them?
Hi Jim i want to reshaft an old ping zing gold or brass ,years about 1970s putter but can t find a shaft anywhere around ,is there any specs or diameter that i can work with?
I believe a 355 will work
@@McGolf thanks ,i will try that, talk to you tomorrow.
I am thinking of buying a Cure RX5 center shaft 34” putter. At 5’ 6.5” I typically cut and regrip my non-center shaft putters shafts down to 32-33” to fit my height. Does the ANGLE of a center shaft putter require the shaft to be bent to fit, or a new refitting process? Need help, thx!
typically the lie angle is the lie angle. a slight adjustment may be needed based on the way to address the ball.
Hi, do you have any recommendations for dealing with rust inside a pocket cavity? I just bought some used Honma TR20Ps and I can see some rust on the inside of the pocket cavity of the 6i and 7i, I can't really see inside the other ones. Is there something I could spray in there that would prevent the rust from getting worse?
A dremekl to get rid of the rust and some wd40 to cover, wax also works but could be a pain to remove
@@McGolf unfortunately the slot into the pocket is very narrow on the TR20Ps, 2mm on the 6iron and less than 1mm on the 10 iron. So I can’t get any tools in there. I’m thinking I will spray some anti rust stuff in there then rinse them out, and then spray some rust inhibitor in there pockets and hope for the best.
Can you provide names of compound & buffing pad you're using?
it the typical red black brown stuff finished with the yellow polish from grizzley
your camera needs to be more in focus to really show the difference of your skills
Ben Hogan started pinning his clubs because back in the day the epoxies they had were not as good as epoxies we use today. more importantly Ben Hogan was an extremely meticulous man. he left nothing to chance and he knew that if a pro was using one of his clubs in competition and for some reason the epoxy was bad it would be bad for business if word got around that Hogan heads on clubs would come popping off without warning. not a good look. also, it was the custom in the early 1950's for manufacturers to pin their heads. Hogan sold his company in 1960 but stayed on for many years running the operation. they were still pinning heads on into the early 1990's. I am not even sure if they ever stopped pinning heads. the company changed hands a few times between the late 1990's and today.
