  • A quick video of the two main shadow-stations of my Märklin H0 railroad.
The lower station has 8 tracks of 4 meters. The upper station has 7 tracks. Each track is divided into two 2-meters ections and can hold 2 short trains or 1 long one.
Upon arrival at the shadow-station, trains are stopped and measured for length. A track is automatically assigned.
Once a train is allowed to LEAVE the station, one is selected automatically by the PLC (a computer used in industrial automatization).
Even though the layout is heavily automated and computer-controlled, running equipment is old-school ANALOGUE, and uses good old AC sine-wave in the tracks... :-) -Even though, simulated breaking and acceleration-stretches are implemented on the visual part of the layout, before and after signals.
    The helix to-and-from the lower shadow-station is a 4-round R4/R5 ramp.
The lower shadow-station has been working like this for over 15 years now. (The upper station a few years less)
Edit 2023-11-24; Both shadow-stations have had all tracks lengthened to 5 meters, and 4 of the 15 tracks has been divided into 3 segments instead of 2, in order to optimize use for shorter trains, -especially those running to/from the branchline (where a maximum of 1,5m length must be observed).

How many tracks do you have on each level and how far are the levels spaced from each other?

      Thanks for your comment!
There are 9 levels (including the small top alpine shadow-station) with roughly 10cm between each level.
"Tracks per level" varies greatly, and I couldn´t tell you. -But if you refer to the 2 main shadow-stations, there is a total of 15 tracks, each 5 meters usefull length.
