Highly recommend Henry Marsh’s books. He discusses his clinical mistakes and the different factors which contribute to decision making in medicine.

Being Mortal is incredible, I would highly recommend picking it up! I read it a good few years ago and I think about it a lot still.

So nice to see a video on medical non-fiction. I'm a med student and haven't read lots of the ones you have mentioned. They all sound great but I think 'Unwell women' shall be the first I pick up. I have a few recommendations for books which contrast anatomy to poignant patient cases: Stephen Westaby's 'Fragile lives' is fantastic, and neurosurgeon Henry Marsh's books :-)

This is such a great idea for a video and what a great selection of books! I'm planning on reading The Gene early next year as part of a theme of nature vs nurture reading and I can't agree more on No Visible Bruises, a topic I did not know a lot about. Let me Strongly Recommend Far From the Tree about having children who may have a disibility which is not inherited and how their parents dealt with the news and child i.e. Downs Syndrome, deafness, autism....the book won many awards and is written with warmth and honesty.

Fantastic list as always! Added both Sanatorium and The Man Who Closed the Asylums to my to-read list. Loved Collected Schizophrenias. Magical Language of Others is another great book that while not focused on mental health specifically it's definitely one of the main strands of it and I thought it was beautifully written. Also Ill Feelings by Alice Hattrick is one I'm keen to get when it's released in August, it's a medical memoir/history type book on "untold case histories of medically unexplained and invisible illness".

    • @SophieIslington

Oh I'll definitely keep an eye out for Ill Feelings- that sounds like something I'd really enjoy.

This was very interesting. The medical field is wild to me, on the one hand it can help so many people and on the other hand the way they conduct their research is sometimes so unethical, let's just try cut away this and see what happens.

I put so many of these books on my TBR now. I really liked Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel. I also love Jenny Lawson's books for funny memoirs about mental illness. I also recommend Can't You Hear Them? by Simon McCarthy-Jones about hearing voices and Heart by Sandeep Jauhar about the heart

What a sensational selection! Thanks so much for making this video. I work in medicine so obviously medical nonfiction is a favourite of mine. I hadn't heard of quite a few of these, but will be seeking them out. The others are generally languishing unread in my TBR.
I haven't read Inferno yet, but did listen to another memoir on post partum psychosis by Laura Dockrill, What Have I Done? It was terrific.

Hi! YOU are a genius! (Of the books you listed, I loved the ones I've read and added all others to my wishlist. So, thank you!) Did you look into Disability Studies as a major at University? Read "Claiming Disability" by Simi Linton? If you enjoy the subject matter, I can recommend more.

great video I'll be watching again to get down so many titles. As a medical professional I read lots of books in my area. One of my favorites is. Expecting Adam by Martha Beck. It's the story of a woman who is pregnant with a child with Down's and her journey to decide to have the baby and the treatment she received. It's fairly old (1999) but had much to say about obstetrical care and the medicines attitudes about disability.

I’m reading “and the band played on- politics, people and the aids epidemic”- I think you’d enjoy it! Atm it’s more about the discovery of HIV than the politics, so really heavy on the medical stuff. So interesting and heart breaking
