I understand the scope of this video. There are limitations with what the creators could do. This is obviously not meant to be a documentary. The offshore industry around Mumbai is going through a bad phase. There are regulations regarding the working season ie. till what date can ships remaining around the platforms. These things are written in the contract signed with ONGC. However let us say work needs to be done for another week after the deadline. In this case ONGC also looks the other way coz the cost of towing the barge back and then again towing it to the platform afterwards is prohibitively high. If you keep the barge at sea then the insurance agreement is void. However companies still take the risk owing to financial pressure. So in certain cases there is pressure on the captain from the company to keep the barge at sea. In certain cases the captain might also be "incentivized" to do so. Now if a captain is someone who is strictly by the book kinda guy he will refuse this. However some don't and take a calculated risk depending on the weather forecast which was unfortunately wrong in this case. But yes ultimately it's the captain's decision. He is responsible for the barge/ship and the souls on board.

Bisbo half knowledge is dangerous.....it was Afcons to be blamed and they do work in rough weather infact I remember Afcons made us to dive in rough weather. No where petroleum minister and Afcons name was mentioned as both vessels where on their charter. And one more thing according to DG guidelines all vessels working in Indian coast must be self propelled and ONGC has to comply with it. There are many information provided wrong in your video

Yes the video is based on half knowledge or popular knowledge, call whatever you want to. Certain things are wrong while many are left out entirely or shown in a simplistic way. This is how social media works.

This was a work barge without propulsion even the captain is not master mariner they are barge engineers. The people work on barge are welders, fitters, engineers QC and NDT, painters, scaffolders etc. Marine side crew are very less the the movement of the barge operations is done through tugs and Anchor handling vessels. But this is actually not allowed it must be self propelled as per DG guidelines which is always ignored by ONGC. Such kind of vessels are used in Middle east countries where there is shallow water with no tidal speed. But yes all crew must do their Basic Offshore Safety Induction Training before joining any work in the seas whether it be oilfield. And right now Indian CDC is also compulsory. All went for a toss

My father works in the same industry. In fact he had personally worked alongside some of the people who died. The video is good however it is too simplistic and many nuances are left out. The story my father told me from his inside sources and his own experience with offshore work is not that simplistic. Most importantly a lot of details regarding WHY the barges were over there at the time, certain accepted industry policies which fall in the grey area, the protocols followed in such cases etc. are simply not mentioned in the video. The offshore industry based in Mumbai at the moment is going through a terrible phase with many big companies shutting down or in severe financial trouble. My father is yet to recieve one year salary after his former company shut down. The decision to not jump is also shown in a very simplistic way. There were other factors involved eg. the first few who jumped were slammed against the walls of the barge and others were sucked underneath the barge. There are many such details which are known only to people who have worked in the offshore industry. Reading the comments below just shows how people watch some oversimplified video and form an opinion based on it. I don't blame the creators of the channel though. They can only go on popular knowledge and cannot include everything in the video.
