    it's not 'just a building.' It stood for over 800 years, took 200 to build, and is the work so many dedicated believers. We cannot begin to imagine how many people have visited Notre Dame, how many drew comfort from it, and how many, even if not Catholic, treasured it as a symbol of Paris and the surrounding community. It was a work of art and an important piece of history. Thank god no one lost their lives, and I believe they should rebuild, but it's a terrible loss.

I'm an Iraqi and in the past 200 years, thousands of historical (3000+ yr olds) artefacts have either been stolen by the super powers or destroyed by local idiots (ISIS). After a building burned with a few hours half a billion was raised but when thousands are killed barely anything is raised.

      Totally understand where you coming from. But let look at this way, the cathedral holds more sway in the psychi of the Europeans. It's a legacy and a testament of the lives that came before. Their sorrow isn't so much of its age, but the lost of continuity and perception of stability from this witness from the past. So the collective shock is realizing the collapse of that symbol of continuity in their culture. Thus why they are indifferent to the collapse of an older and ancient empire artifact when its lost or pillage.

    Here is a point for people who say this is a waste of money, let’s say we don’t restore it, what will we do with it? Just let it sit and rot away, then have it demolished? No. The Namdaemun gate in Seoul, South Korea, which dates back to the 14th century, was incinerated by some old drunk guy in 2008. By 2013, it was completely restored and reopened. This shows that landmarks make a city, and a country, and that they are worth something.

      Lets face it, it will be rebuild. The vault ceiling seems mostly OK. It's sad, but as long as the stonework is intact, the roof will be rebuild.
      Two other great cathedrals, Reims and Chartres, had their roof construction destroyed in fires. Both had them replaced in 2 decades.

    • @slome815
      @slome815 5 років тому

      @@RonjaStarCollector There is a vaulted ceiling under the roof, no light would come through. Still, I hope they just rebuild it. Maybe without the spire (the spire was a 19th century addition). It also seems that the collapsing spire was the only part of the roof collapse that actually took the vaulted ceiling down with it.
      Most cathedrals and churches that have had there roof burned, had the great forest of wood framing replaced with just a simple steel or cast iron construction (this is the case for both Reims and Chartres)
      It would be nice if this cathedral could keep such a nice (though hidden to most visitors) part of the architecture.
      So yeah, we have the plans, I hope they rebuild it the same.

      So that rainforest does it have a name, or you are here to show how virtuous you are?

      Exactly. I love this building and it's sad but it's just a building. More than a hundred people died in california fires in 2018. Cities burnt down completely. People lost their homes. It's a real tragedy.

      rainforests are important and there are tones of people who who care, but this building has significant cultural value. How would you like it if someone destroyed something that you cared dearly about.
      It is incredibly disrespectful to think this building burning down isn’t a big deal.

      this is an issue that needs to be addressed too. it seems that notre dame is not the only church to strangely catch fire in France.

    I've always wanted to visit; it's awful how quickly it was destroyed. Incredible that no one died!
