Great pick with Kalamax, probably my favorite Commander to play! Two opinions I will share on the deck: for anyone replicating this build, absolutely do not take Comet Storm out of the deck, it has won me more games than any other play. And second, Firemind's Foresight is an incredible value add for for this deck because you tutor for SIX instants, so that's one you should strongly consider. Thanks a lot as always Mitch!
Unwind and Rewind would be really hard to net mana off of, there basically need to be two spells on the stack that we want to counter to go up on mana. Countering just one spell would cause the original to fizzle, as it would not have a valid target correct?
I was going to comment something similar. It's still good to give you the mana back to cast stuff next turn for value, but there would definitely need to be 2 spells on the stack before casting either Unwind or Rewind.
@@RybotTWC I'm petty as hell, I cut these cards from my Kalamax deck for this reason. When I had them in I definitely waited for someone to cast a spell, someone else to counter it and countered both for the value.

@@BaconStrips0 1- It is fun to copy the stuff Ur opponents can do, as well as Ur stuff. But, when its doing what is supposed to it can win and it is fun to play with
This deck is amazing with some simple pump spells like Unleash Fury which can make Kalamax 1 point away from lethal for 2 Mana. In fact I built a competitive 1 shot 1 kill version for relatively cheap. But I understand taking out Unleash Fury for Fury Storm in a storm style deck. Though if you do upgrade, I'd also probably add Riku of Two Reflections since his price dropped with Double Master's release to under 10$. All said and done, Glad to see you back at it Mitch. The deck looks fun, playful, and for that cheap I might build it as an option for Kalamax.
Reasonable upgrades also include Wilderness Reclamation so you can play sorcery speed on your turn and still have all your mana for instant speed interaction during the opponent's turns. Seedborn Muse also does this but it will also untap Kalamax so it's only good for when you can tap Kalamax for free like with Springleaf Drum.
Mitch, basically from the moment you revealed your top picks from Commander 20 I built this exact deck. My favourite thing is using stuff like gravitic punch or fungal sprouting as springboards for going infinite with copy spells. I need a Ral though. Great content as always, thanks.
Comet Storm is REALLY good; it's even better when it's copied once or twice (or more). I think it belongs in the 99 along with Expansion // Explosion. I'd look for something else to pull. Also, Kazuul's Fury // Kazuul's Cliffs is $.25 and is Fling on a land! It's a must-include. You can just pull out a Mountain.
Great Kalamax video Mitch! Love Kalamax as a temur commander, coming down for only 4 mana and the deck is definitely very versatile and can just win out of nowhere sometimes 😊 copying early ramp like explore or Harrow from opponents is really sweet too
although I haven't gotten to play it, my Kalamax deck shares some of the spell copying and payoffs, as most do. I'm not a fan of how easily Kalamax goes infinite, but I still have Chandra's Ignition in the deck just in case (had to cut Soul's Fire unfortunately). That said, for anyone looking for a bit of extra chaos I recommend Wild Ricochet. Primal Amulet and Manamorphose are also solid additions
MITCH! I’m so glad to see you’re back up and running. I love the deck, Kalamax is a very powerful commander but rarely have I seen many of these cards played with him, SUPER COOL! And you know what I’m about to say. SHOW US THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD!
For crop rotation and harrow the lands come into play untapped so they're even better than you had started. Also crop rotation can get you any lands which is great if you're running "budget duels" (check, pain, etc.). I love my kalamax deck, probably the most fun and most competitive deck I've ever built. I've got a handful of expensive cards in it but it is mostly budget.
I guess the thing with the increasing vengeance infinite loop is that you must be able to put another type of spell of the stack to copy instead of increasing vengeance otherwise the loop won't ever end and the game is a draw unless you have Ral out.
So I was looking for a new Control Commander and perusing Card Kingdom and punching in random triple colors. I really liked stegosauruses, so Kal caught my eye. I watched your videos and found something that I've been wanting forever: An Infinity Deck! Thanks, C.Q!
HI You may not see this but im running this deck now and it's been working very well! I did make one addition in running CHANDRA'S IGNITION and it has won a game or 2 by itself, something to consider friend but absolutely fantastic deck! TY
Nah. Reality’s set in since then. Can’t support Captain and run a Commander channel can he? I’m surprised he didn’t think of that in the first place tbh.
Im honestly amazed you managed to make this $28 i mean it was hard for me to make a $35 feldon deck, i mean i guess i might be able to take off $3-$4 but i have no idea where i could cut it further. You are amazing mitch.
Ah it’s great to see you create a budget commander deck again. I love Kalamax. My favourite way is yours to win is to abuse his infinite +1/+1 counters copy combo into a Fling like you say in your video. Just love the idea of catapulting a dino at my friends’ faces.
A note about how Kalamax interacts with counterspells such as Unwind: with how the stack works and the rules with how counterspells work, if a counterspell like Unwind is copied with Kalamax and both iterations of the spell target the same spell, the one on top of the stack will counter the spell, and the lower one will fizzle, thus not actually netting mana. If you have something like Double Vision or Twinning Staff out, you could have the original spell counter the thing you’re attempting to counter, and you could have the second copy counter the first copy to then net you 3 mana.
Love your vids man. I've been watching since your first deck tech and you have helped me to have a lot of fun. A good 80% of my decks are your lists. Your Asmadi the dire deck is my favorite deck I've ever built. Keep up the good work
Hey keep up the good work, found your channel not to long ago and it is one of the things that got me into the format. It has been a pretty fun time deck crafting with everything going on in the world currently.
Great deck tech as always! One card I was surprised to see missing from the upgrades is Chandra’s Ignition! A great mass fling that’ll end the game on the spot with Kalimax
I just started playing edh and magic with the kalamax precon and had just made similar changes to the precon like you had done in your budget guide so i think i'm getting on the right track with commander now
The only things i would change/add are the two copy/token spells in red that combo with the Dualcaster Mage (Twinflame and Heat Shimmer) and Fury Storm (EDIT: yeah, it's in the upgrade section
You would need two spells for the counters for the spell and copy to resolve. The spell itself would fizzle if your copy gets rid of the only spell on the stack
This deck is insanely good for the price point. I built something VERY similar with a couple different cards and it did extremely well in our 4 player games.
I think Rewind and Unwind only net additional mana if there are at least two other spells on the stack. If there is only one spell on the stack and you copy your Rewind/Unwind, both the original and the copy will need to target the only other spell on the stack (unless you want to counter your own spell). If the copy resolves, it will counter the desired target and untap some of your lands. Your second counter fizzles with no legal target and you will also don´t untap any lands for the fizzled spell. But still two very good cards since you get basically a free counterspell and can immediately interact on another players turn and they only get better if there is more stuff on the stack to counter.
Stitch in Time would be a good reasonable upgrade as its anywhere from under a dollar to $2, and since you can copy it so much (and it doesn't exile itself) you'll likely be able to chain extra turns together very quickly. An extra turn spell at 3 CMC that doesn't exile itself would be great here.
If you sacrifice Kalamax to cast fling, the spell does NOT get copied. Since it's an additional cost, Kalamax will be dead before the spell is cast so he won't be there to double up the fling damage. As an alternative to fling, I would recommend soul's fire.
A card that I am super surprised you did not include is Channeled Force, as it is the type of bomb that will win you a game by blasting two of your opponents best lads while getting you a full grip when you have your commander out.
Honestly, my two favourite cards in my Kalamax deck, are my Ral, Storm Conduit (which also feels thematically very fitting) and Frantic Search, both of these cards have won me games.
skaarg the rage pits would be a decent addition to this deck as a utility land, giving trample when you're comboing is the same as unblockable and it's a land, cheap one too and it costs 2 to do so. It's also good when you just want to do some damage of course.
Love this vid. Gave me some good ideas on upgrading my Kalamax precon. BTW Chandra's Ignition! Especially if it gets very large or infinite, it can clear the board, especially if you're tapping kalamax to make mana with springleaf drum or survivors' encampment : ) and then if you cast something or use somethign to copy it. kaboom
one of my most favourit commander! But I think there is a problem with some cards: Copys doesn‘t get cast. So effects like Gutter Snipe still just trigger one time (not sure though I‘m not a judge). Must includes are Brass‘s Bounty and Mana Geyser.
Hey Mitch, in upgrades you’ve touched on upgrades for mostly the Copy spells plan. What about adding the [Return of the Wildspeaker] as a hybrid “Draw a lot”/“Pump the token army”? What to change for it?
I triple KO'd with a similar version of this deck just yesterday. I killed one player with commander damage and casted a copied fling(the land version from zendikar rising) on the two remaining players. I didn't want to put Ral in the deck though. I took advantage of green spells that give hexproof instead. For "removal", I used blue spells that gives -x/-0 because a lot of those effects have built in draw a card effects. It's too easy to run out of gas in a deck like this, that's why I relied on such spells. PS: I had basic lands when I did the triple K.O. surprising two of my opponents who had expensive dual lands. 😂
My friends got me this precon to get me in into edh and I fell in love ever since Got underworld breach and kiki kiki combo cramed in there now for cedh
lol I just picked this guy up and my new group was talking about doing a budget night for decks. Been wanting a storm deck that wasn't the legacy or modern versions I carry around also.
i've benn playing kalamax a while and found that the tolken makes (young pyromancer, murmuring mystic and Talrad) just are not that effective. this might just be because my deck is not as focused on casting alot of spells, more copying one intant each turn. I recomend adding more cantrips that draws you more cards so you don't run out of gass (Oona's Grace, Think Twise, everdream and Cerulean Wisps are som examples). Also counterspells that tax are a lot of fun copying, like spell pierce. Also if you are building this deck add Retun of the wildspeaker, it's worth it
I really dig this commander. Also Chandra's Ignition + any copy spell. If kalamax is tapped, destroy the entire table AND boardwipe at the same time. Nobody sees it coming. 🤭
Love it! Would Glammerdye or Oona's Grace be worthy of this deck? Both are instants with Retrace so you can continually cast them from the graveyard each turn but without "exile after casting" condition.
Honor-Worn Shaku, Springleaf Drum, Survivor's Encampment, Holdout Settlement are all inexpensive ways to tap Kalamax, too. Cryptolith Rite is outstanding as well, but not budget. But yes, Vehicles are good as well -- they're just hard to find space for if you're all-in on the Fork plan. Cultivator's Caravan is an auto-include for sure, though. What other vehicles would you/do you play?
yes, maybe you got a better balance than i got while brewing, i could not decide between big copy value and just going for combo, since both want different decks
My apologies for the decklist mishap - the basic lands should be in there now!

skaarg the rage pits would be a decent addition to this deck as a utility land, giving trample when you're comboing is the same as unblockable and it's a land, cheap one too and it costs 2 to do so. It's also good when you just want to do some damage of course.
Love this vid. Gave me some good ideas on upgrading my Kalamax precon. BTW Chandra's Ignition! Especially if it gets very large or infinite, it can clear the board, especially if you're tapping kalamax to make mana with springleaf drum or survivors' encampment : ) and then if you cast something or use somethign to copy it. kaboom
Oooh nice! I just bought the precon today and then came home to find this! I'll have to make some upgrades!
one of my most favourit commander! But I think there is a problem with some cards: Copys doesn‘t get cast. So effects like Gutter Snipe still just trigger one time (not sure though I‘m not a judge).
Must includes are Brass‘s Bounty and Mana Geyser.
Definitely some ideas there I will consider in my Kalamax deck.
Also, Radiate is kinda awesome in with Kalamax. Gonna try it out
We got a melek rep! In the 99 but still has my fav commander
When Mitch does a deck tech for a deck you have and now you have a bunch of upgrade ideas!!!
Hey Mitch, in upgrades you’ve touched on upgrades for mostly the Copy spells plan. What about adding the [Return of the Wildspeaker] as a hybrid “Draw a lot”/“Pump the token army”? What to change for it?
Try adding Aria of Flame and/or Sphinx-Bone Wand. I have Aria in my Elsha spellslinger deck, and it quickly becomes a haymaker!
Flings ok I just think there is better cards as kalamax doesnt copy fling but does copy other good things.
My friends got me this precon to get me in into edh and I fell in love ever since
Got underworld breach and kiki kiki combo cramed in there now for cedh
That's not what makes a deck cEDH
This was a really cool deck tech. Good stuff Mitch!
lol I just picked this guy up and my new group was talking about doing a budget night for decks. Been wanting a storm deck that wasn't the legacy or modern versions I carry around also.
Good to see you back!
i've benn playing kalamax a while and found that the tolken makes (young pyromancer, murmuring mystic and Talrad) just are not that effective. this might just be because my deck is not as focused on casting alot of spells, more copying one intant each turn. I recomend adding more cantrips that draws you more cards so you don't run out of gass (Oona's Grace, Think Twise, everdream and Cerulean Wisps are som examples). Also counterspells that tax are a lot of fun copying, like spell pierce.
Also if you are building this deck add Retun of the wildspeaker, it's worth it
I was thinking of cutting the token makers. This has convinced me.
I really dig this commander. Also Chandra's Ignition + any copy spell.
If kalamax is tapped, destroy the entire table AND boardwipe at the same time.
Nobody sees it coming. 🤭
thank you for this deck tech I have wanted this for a long time
Thanks for putting up another video, Mitch!! 🥳
I needed help thinking of ways to tune my Kalamax, so thank you!
I added niv mizzet and instant golden pig in my opinion, curiosity is a must for that win con and then lab man and oracle for the win
Yess Mitch you star. I got the precon and have been struggling with it. Let me indulge upon this video now.
Love it! Would Glammerdye or Oona's Grace be worthy of this deck? Both are instants with Retrace so you can continually cast them from the graveyard each turn but without "exile after casting" condition.
Unwind and rewind don't net Mana unless both the original and the copy counter a spell
I have a nivmizzet parun spellslinger deck that is basically the red blue sides of this entire vid with more counters and removal to fill in the green
I thought this would be a video for Captain! Jokes aside, thx for the video! I got the Kalmax precon and I love using it.
I really enjoyed the review of copying spells, sometimes those interactions get tricky
I can’t imagine playing a Kalamax deck with no vehicles in it. Makes me sad that so many people don’t play them.
Mitch, I'd love to see a Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge deck tech. Thanks for the content.
yes, maybe you got a better balance than i got while brewing, i could not decide between big copy value and just going for combo, since both want different decks
Great deck! Glad that tactics are back at least for the patron videos!
I'm glad you are back!
I like this build better than the combo deck I built for Kalamax. I will have to give it a try.
