    Very cool phil! I love the FX line for Windows 98 + DOS combo builds. Also interesting is the Quadro FX1100 AGP, which is effectively a GeForce FX5700 Ultra but can be had for much better prices.
    I know you've covered it before but it would have been neat seeing a direct comparison to the FX5500 PCI version -- they can be useful for systems without an AGP slot.

    Side-question-- I find myself wondering how you organize your boards and parts. How you store your motherboards, processors, and adapter cards. How do you keep them nice and undamaged and easy to find? That would probably be a great video! It's nice how dust-free and clean all your components are. Nice detail.

    • @philscomputerlab

      I keep them in bags and put them in plastic storage containers.

      @@philscomputerlab Hi Phil, thanks for the quick reply. That sounds basically like what I do myself. I've found it hard to always remember where I have put something when it's in a container. Do you have that problem as well or do you catalog your stuff somehow? I guess I am assuming you have a sizable collection of parts. Maybe you're disciplined and keep your collection trim. But somehow I feel like computer parts reproduce on their own. I often find 3 adapter cards where I swore I only stored 2. :)

    • @philscomputerlab

      @@bitslasher89 I don't have a catalogue or inventory! Luckily I have a rough memory of what I have LOL I do separate items, like ISA sound cards go into a dedicated box, so do PCI sound cards, or PCIe. Same with Slot 1 CPUs, as they are larger. Normal CPUs go in plastic clamp shells and then per socket into sandwich bag, which I label. Stuff like that. Biggest pain are GPUs and Video cards as they are bulky and require lots of space. If I ever move, it will be a pain LOL

    • @bitslasher89
      @bitslasher89 4 роки тому +3

      PhilsComputerLab Oh yes same here! That’s a good idea to separate by bus type. So far I have only really done that between my micro channel (IBM PS/2) and PC Cards. Now that I’m playing with newer parts it’s not just ISA and PCI anymore (which I store together at the moment. Speaking of that- I feel somewhat late to the party- everyone seems to think everything is a collectors item these days, at least priced like it! I got into the hobby like 15 years ago when 90s and early 00s stuff was a bargain. I took like a 10 year break, and Now even 5 year old stuff people almost want to treat as “vintage” parts lol! For some weird reason I’ve become really interested in building a super performant Windows 98 machine (when I’ve been happy with a 1ghz P3 for 15 years). Doing it with a 775/865 was my first thought but that’s kinda crazy now, but even 478/865 parts seem to be getting expensive now. Especially the graphics cards! It’s still fun though. Makes the hunt more rewarding I guess. :)

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  4 роки тому +4

      @@bitslasher89 With prices, think of a timeline with and at any given time, there is stuff that is cheap. Before and after is more expensive. Currently it seems around LGA 775 that you can get terrific value. When I stared, everyone was chasing high powered PCI 486 boards and prices quickly increased. While I ended up getting a few 386 and 486 stuff, mostly from Eastern Europe, back then, the best value for DOS gaming was Socket 7 gear and Slot 1 stuff was also prices cheaply. If you need Windows 98 and DOS on a budgtet, Socket 754/939 and Pentium 4 Socket 478 gets my vote!

    Two comments. First, with the overclocking, I was able to overclock an FX 5200 awhile back and saw a performance change. I think that was XP though. Secondly, I do believe nGlide uses DX9 shaders for translation. As we all know, the FX series DX9 shaders were terribly implemented. I believe older versions of nGlide or dgVoodoo can use DX7/8 translations. This might help improve performance. Good to see a classic retro video today!

    • @MJ-uk6lu

      My FX 5200 actually overclocked by 30% without voltmods. Also it seems that even programs like afterburner can sometimes work cards as old as this.

  • @gravitone

    These cards were quite bandwidth starved I believe. Perhaps a comparison video of the FX series at some point is a good idea? all the way from the lowly 5200 up to the 5950.

      @Dr ROLFCOPTER! I benched my FX 5900 Ultra extensively against my 9800 XXL (aka 9800 XT) in a C2D system. Put all the results over at Vogons. The Nvidia card trades blows directly with the ATI card.
      Saying that a 9600XT beats the 5950 is absolutely hilariously false.
      Just saying...

    • @TheVanillatech
      @TheVanillatech 3 роки тому +1

      @Dr ROLFCOPTER! No. Unless you were running the 5950 in PCI mode or simply didn't have a driver installed. The 5950 is faster than my 5900 Ultra, which absolutely annihilates the 9600XT. Entirely different class of card. Not even close in performance.
      I owned a 9600 Pro back then. Even my Ti 4800 SE was faster in Quake III. I only swapped in the 9600 Pro to play some FarCry and a handful of newer DX9 titles. My friends 9800 Pro was much faster than my 9600 Pro, and so was the 5900 Ultra.
      Never owned a 5950 (even today, still don't have one), but they were faster still. Trading blows with the 9800 XT. Overall the 9800 XT was faster (except in OpenGL), but it was close.

    Times have changed when a decade ago getting something like a 5700 or a 5900 was really easy and demand was very low. Goodwill here in the states would have a healthy supply along with plenty of other agp cards to choose from then they changed everything up to appeal to the yuppies so almost everything goes to the scrap now. Still managed to snipe a socket 4 machine off them one morning when another customer walked in lol. For $5 it was a good deal for me :)
    My only regret was not buying a boxed pair of socket 8 overdrives for $15 each but then again they would have been lost in an arson attack two years later.

    Ha! I don't think I'd want a reference 5800/5900/5950 Ultra at any price (due to the blower fan that sounds like a hair drier). The FX5500 or 5600 does have decent performance for the price though.

      Yeah, I was not impressed with the fx series at all. I had a 5600xt back in the day. I didn't have money for anything decent for awhile and this being free and able to play gta san Andreas, unlike what I previously had, it lasted me. However it was slower than what I sent in for rma and had less features, but it had direct x 9 support. I thought it was a good card until I noticed some issues and read about the fx series. Sadly a radeon 9800 was out of the question.

    Fun seeing you return to Windows 98, i missed those videos. I got a 6800GT AGP waiting for me in the closet along with the VIA A8V motherboard you have.
    But unfortunately while i got a great deal on the card it has the nv48 which is the later revision with the bridge chip. So i hope its going to play nice with the board and drivers once i get more parts to build a working time machine out of the parts i collected so far.
    Patcher wise i had better luck with AutoPatcher than with the unofficial servicepack. Especially AutoPatcher 2008 is really nice. Despite it being older and slower the end result is a fantastic stable system complete with IE6, WMP9 and DX9C. Its how i found the hotfix for the 5710 that fixes its IDE issues since autopatcher contains that fix.

    Some of the M-Audio sound cards would be interesting. I think there are only two the Revolution 5.1 and Revolution 7.1 of modern interest. The Sonic Theater 7.1 USB card in a box is kind of interesting.. but the Sonica not so much. Retro Video Capture and how to do that versus today with SD video would be cool. Retro ATI Wonder (TV and All-In) versus the Hauppauge AverMEdia offerings. I've been long suffering with the confusing history and array of choices from Raw Uncompressed capture, to the trade offs of DV capture, to MPEG2 and then later MPEG4 options.. seems today H.265 is all the rage. It is niche.. but there are still a few of us convertering VHS tapes for friends and family.. if you can find a working VCR. Playing with DVD recorders and Blu-ray recorders is also a riot. You probably don't want to go down the road of Time Base Correctors.. Uber rare and Uber Expensive rolls royce of VCR archeology.. it can get expensive.

    This seems like a good option for both old and new games. Radeon 9600 is otherwise probably better at newer games but the 8 bit paletted textures and such is nice too have. The FX might be the sweet spot for playing both late 90s games and early 2000s games.

    The OG Xbox GPU is closer in specs to a GeForce 4 due to the 2 Vertex Shaders, the GeForce 3 had only 1 Vertex Shader. In theory an NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200, NV25 A3, 64 MB, 128 bit could be downclocked to match OG Xbox GPU performance.

    Very good presentation, but talking about FX cards as DX9 gpu's is misleading because of their sketchy support for it. They are more like DX8 gpu's with some DX9 features, just so Nvidia didn't look like clowns when marketing it against ATI's Radeon series which are real DX9 gpu's.

      anything but fond memories. FX is a big part of it, but generally the design of the cards just started sucking. stickers, stupid shrouds, skinny PCB's. All the noise, fluff and feathers, but not the performance. Names got dumber too. It was a contrast coming from excellent geforce cards like gf3 ti and g4 ti, or the radeon 9700 pro. The 6000 series had a great budget card and all, but you had a 9700 pro to beat in wow-factor... that's tough.
      Looked like they made the fx era cards for kids. That was a spot on observation since that's exactly what's being done still. Thankfully at least they manage to churn out a cool looking gpu here and there but oh god the THICC cards look and sound so fucking dumb, couple it with the fucking window every PC "needs" and bam, we got a souped up FX going all over again

    I have one of these coming from eBay now... to be paired with an uber retro build, one that hits the nostalgia mark for me... as it will duplicate something I had when young. Though not TEC cooled and massively OCd this time. An Abit VP6, 2x PIII Coppermine 1Ghz cpu's, Win2K to split the load, 1GB SDRAM (133), SB LIVE, USB 2.0 card (PCI) to go with the onboard 1.1 (4x), onboard RAID (IDE), etc.... such a good board. Caps coming as I type as well... Recapping the mobo before I even attempt to power anything up, as at least one is clearly bad. . . But yeah... I can't wait.. and this card should be overkill still yet, as it is of a later era than the PC being built really... going into an AGP 4x slot, etc. Should be good... Wanted a Voodoo 5 5500 like back in the day, but oh well... I'd rather buy a 3070 for that price, when available... lol. Honestly, some of the best prices for a V5 5500 is just under $600US... with that in mind, seeing this for $30, and it being a bit above the era needed, it was a win for sure.
