Yeah guards are practically a non-issue once you know you can can guard the arm that does the coin flip and just keep it until the enemy dies effectively making him unable to tackle haha
Plus the fact that the lucky coin item's description does tell you that you can hold shift to use one to help your odds during a coin flip. It can be easy to miss if you don't read it of course but the game does provide the information.

If you read the Lucky Coin's description, it literally says that you can hold shift to use it during Coin Flips. There's also an NPC called Ser Seymor that gives you some pretty useful tips like that you should guard if you feel like a dangerous attack is coming (Guarding blocks the enemies' Coin Flip attacks).
Just a word of advice if anyone is reading this: When you get an empty scroll, to advance to the next verse use the enter bar. DO NOT USE THE Z BUTTON, or else you will get something like: O LORDZ GIVEZ WHITE ANGELZ, wasting your scroll. Also if you want to learn a skill in the second verse use TEACH, and if you want a certain item use GIVE. So yeah be careful with that!
Fun fact, despite the game being RNG Hell, it's entirely beatable without ever winning a single coin flip. Frapollo94 has the patience of a saint for the things he manages in his challenge runs.
The key for the coin flip for me is to stick to a side and run it for the entire game. Head or Tails, doesn't matter, just stick to it. Even if you get like 10 bad flips in a row, you must never deviate.

@diavolojaegar Yeah true, the dungeons and monsters honestly fit Funger, but the amount of people (more dangerous than the monsters sometimes) in it (not to mention the existing cities outside of it) makes it less empty and oppressive.
What I love about this game and why I think it’s so great is that it forces you to go against everything you know about how to play a game because the answer to a problem in the game that you would normally think is right is typically the wrong answer. It’s a pretty cool and unconventional way to do a turn based RPG. Though, this game is DEFINITELY not for everyone because it’s very unforgiving and will never hold your hand or baby you. Plus, the RNG can be infuriating.
Would you consider it to be more along the lines of ''Okay, what would I do in REAL LIFE to get past this puzzle'' or perhaps ''Okay, so what is the weirdest possible thing I can do that might solve the puzzle'' ?

The first 5 hours tell the player on a storytelling level just what type of place The Dungeon of Fear&Hunger is. The "Fun-ger" in Fear and Hunger comes from creating a strategy to get you as far as possible and strategiclly taking out dangers to make your journey down more supportable. A dark fantasy masterpiece all about increasing your odds of success, in the most depraved and desperate ways possible.
Sincerely even if I did saw the video of Conor in Fear and Hunger how to use empty scroll and using shift for coin flip are a the easiest to guess in my opinion. For the empty scroll, you can found various book on a support that will litteraly said something like "how to use empty scroll, O LORD TEACH HURTING" (Sure Guessing you can used for any spell is harder since you need to unlock the altar that allow you to learn spell for lesser soul to learn they name ). For the coin flip, well it was more an accident but if you try to change your bind you can wich is weird and need to be spawn to learn the used.

It's funny that when the game first started getting popular, people thought the best characters were the best, but then later almost everyone thought the best characters in the game were the worst, and the worst characters in the game were the best. And then it flipped again and "oh no wait they WERE the best".
You don't have to play the 1st one to play the 2nd. You'll miss out on lore stuff and reference but otherwise both games are their own contained story. The 1st one is more dungeon exploration rogue like and shorter compared to the 2nd game which is longer, contains more events and is more character driven. I recommend both to be honest.
The gear Rag starts with appears basic, though depending on how you play him can be very awesome. However, I feel the average Joe may not play him to his fullest
Really underselling Ragn lol. Devour straight up removes the hunger mechanic from him from 90% if the game. The only better starting skill would be Dash imo. Legsweep Id rate the same as Devour, a bit higher if youre going for specific endings. Steal and lockpicking are handy, but Steal isnt safe to do until you have multiple party members and Lockpicking is basically just legsweep ( lol )

Coin flips are genuinely easy. Each time a coin flip is about to start during a fight, you get a prompt like, "you feel the guard tensing up" or something, allowing you to guard through it. In regards to items, by holding shift,vyou can use a lucky coin
