Thanks for the memory refresh from the mid 80s when I worked for queen city helicopters in seattle. We flew a S58T just like that one. That put me through A & P school!
I know that the S-58T will out lift something like the Aerospatiale Lama, but Ive always wondered which machine would come out on top with sling loads at altitude in the mountains.
@rebelrecycler: I do indeed recall Riptides. That show featured a 58T that was painted pink as I recall, and the plots usually revolved around that old chopper in one way or another.
Great video that is an ideal use of UA-cam. I do, however, have two questions. Question one: Why does the chopper lean left? Question two: If this chopper saw service in Vietnam, with the aluminum belly and the engines down low in the front, were these helos especially vunerable to attack?
Its originally a S-58 military be the H-34 called the Choctaw. as its a more powerful version than the Sikorsky s-55 Chickasaw. as originally this would be powered by a Wright Cyclone 9 R-1820 radial engine as the nose is shorter and the screened intakes below the cockpit are for the cooling air for the engine as there is a big fan on the engine. same as the s-55 chickasaw its the same setup. as both s-55 and s-58 were converted to turbine the s-55 uses only one engine as two for the s-58. as the s-58 originally is Sikorsky's last piston engined helicopter then its turbine from the s-64 skycrane up to the s-92 blackhawk and super stallion. If the famed avaiator Kermit Weeks aquires an s-58 his specifications would be for the original radial engine. as he has 3 s-55 helicopters one an ex turbine conversion as two are being used for rides at his Fantisy of Flight facility in Polk city florida as he owns Sikorsky's fixed wing aircraft the s-38 s-39 and howard huges s-43.
This was a very interesting and informative video, I feel like I could fly a Sikorsky 58T now! (Just kidding). The collective got me spooked. Great video as always Chuck
It's flying in the south loop for the next few weekends working on a construction job. I wanted to know what kind of helicopter it was so I googled it and found this video. Thanks!
the Wright R-1820 originally the fuel today is 100 low lead aviation gasoline it uses the turbine conversions uses the same tanks modified for jet fuel
But you only have 2hrs. Of flight times, 2hrs ain't nothing, it might take you 2hrs to get to a job then you have to refuel some where get back up and back to the job, what a hassle.

I live in the area and see this 58T on a regular basis (today) it’s really an icon around here and everyone slows down to
It was the best all around fire fighting aircraft I ever worked with.
Informative video and very well done. I have always had a fascination with these Sikorskys.
Great to see it again I was working as mechanic for air america which had 5 aircraft in1970 during the Vietnam war it the best at the time.
Great vid. We sat with a helicopter pilot last month at our car club's annual fly in, drive in cruise night dinner at Bermuda Dunes CA airport.
Interesting...heli's have always fascinated me.
Awesome aircraft! Thanks Chuck.

awesome video!! Just two questions; does the turbo conversion come with a governor and what kind of cruise speeds does they get? thanks!!
Can you maintain control with no hydraulics ???also is that pump make that noise all the time
Midwest Helicopters has a website. You might ask that question directly to them.

Hi,is this Jim Triggs the guitarmaker??
1:00 MOC COMPLETE!
my school this helicopters in brazil
Is these birds still flying?
Yes.
Is aluminum the same as aluminium?
Aluminum is lighter (by one letter) so has a better strength to weight ratio and fun fact, saved the world from having to speak German😜
And it crashed...
